I am not sure if it is dye or paint. Is there a way to visually differentiate between the two? If it is painted, would it still be viable to strip and re-dye?

Honestly, I'm not sure. I'm just speculating since I always think of redyeing as going to a darker color to cover what was there before. I believe when Hermes takes in white bags to refurbish, they paint the white color on. Either way, I know Docride has taken beat up or damaged bags and dyed them black, so it's definitely doable. It's worth asking her about it on her thread in the Reference area, called "Vintage Bag Nightmares."

Hello Ladies! This is my first posting on an Hermes forum, I am usually reviewing the Christian Loubouting threads. I recently came upon a Plume Elan 28 on a resale site and fell in love. I have been aware of Kelly's, Birkins, Lindys, but I am big on smaller bags. So between the size, weight, hefty price tags, and the fact that I am a rather low key under the radar type person, I have never seriously considered Hermes. Until I found the Plume! Keeping in mind, this bag is used (2002 era), and has been re-dyed, it is STILL an Hermes and in good shape. The price is so very good at $500. I believe the bag was originally a light violet or Rose dragee color, and I the re-dye seems to be very similar to the original. In your very expert opinions, should I "go for it" or wait and save for a bag that has not been dyed??? I have so many questions, but I will start here. Than you all very much for your time and opinions! ❤️

The 28 Elan Plume is a lovely, lovely bag. What will you use it for? Every Day, work, occasions? €500 could be a very good price, if the bag is what you want. Would you use the bag as is? Otherwise you have to factor in the extra cost and time of Restauration. I have done maintenance and also rescue because I was curious and liked the experience but did not enjoy it so much that I would keep doing it. Materials now in my shelf not useful anymore and not beautiful. ;) And I found that I still wanted the bag that I really wanted. Would you do the dying yourself or give it to somebody? What leather is the bag? Some leathers are easier to dye than others it seems. Is the re-dye job just a touch up or an overall dye job? I sounds like you are not too wild about pink.... I have seen some barenia pink plume.... If you were to dye a barenia darker, blue, brown, black it could be a lovely bag because the leather is supposed to be so special. Swift leather makes colours shine but I have not seen Docride redye swift leather I am not sure how that will turn out. But I am not an expert just a curious amateur. Either way Hermes is a great adventure. And the leather and craftsmanship are exceptional and really fun. So enjoy!

Thank you so much for all your sage advice, I am grateful and welcome everyone's advice, it is very needed. I have also been speaking with a bag restorer. Their rough estimate determined by photos, could reach $500. So including that into the purchase price of the bag... I wouldn't mind doing the work myself if I was sure that I wouldn't ruin a $500 investment. The reseller states that the bag is swift calf, and the bag is 2002 vintage, but from the research that I have conducted "swift" was not available in 2002. So it is most likely box calf. I have until May to make a final decision, so please keep all the advice and opinions coming!! Thank you SO much!!

It could be swift, which became available after 1999-2000 when Gulliver was discontinued.

Thx Jadite and Ms piggy!

since I have time, unloading some Naturel Plume pix. enjoy!

did someone say barenia plume?

I have a question... I have always assumed that the well loved plumes :heart:in the pictures are VN leather. Seton has identified one as barenia... makes sense. :smartass: But the other one has me confused because VN in my understanding would show patina like that but it would not bend like that..... the other option would be chamonix which could bend and be soft like that but it should not show patina like that in the picture, or am I mistaken? I have been trying to find an answer but I am stuck.

Thank you so much, Seton! Butler in Naturel is very beautiful! The second picture I always thought was VN .... anyway, it is gorgeous either way. And VN gets slouchy over time. Good to know. And barenia, of cause, beautiful.
Cheers.

Hawt! :loveeyes::loveeyes::loveeyes:

Those are all my faves. The second and third pic influenced me to get my own Natural Plume. This is me doing a homage to the third pic.

Good morning, Seton. Everyone loved your photo so much. I never got to see it, would you post it again, please? I am rather curious since I really admire your collection. Have a great weekend. Cheers.

Beautiful pairing. I hope to get an ostrich plume some day.

In the meantime, here is my family portrait.
RH Evercalf Dwich (I finally looked up the official name. Forgive all previous misspellings.), Bareni-a, Naturel Chamonix

Very late to comment but only found this thread today. I've been watching a couple of Waffle Plumes like this on resellers' sites lately, but sadly they were both streaked by penmarks/waterstains and I feared they would be impossible to remove. This is such a lovely trio!

TY, darling. Youre right, old ink is pretty much impossible to remove. Best to wait for the right one. The Dwich is fun but strictly for the H Cognoscenti. It never gets remarks except by the asst manager at Madison Ave who recognized it by name. I was impressed

Thanks a lot for your kind reply - good to know I didn't pull the trigger then, I would have fretted endlessly. Funny name of the bag BTW :-) But it is just sooo lovely so I'll keep on looking for one....
