The problem seems to be she's been taking orders since summer but not filling them or refunding. It would be terrible if she is sick, but she can't take money and never send the goods or refund.

Someone here mentioned they bought earrings that appraised at $200.00 & she paid $1700.00. Did she send out an appraisal stating they were worth $1700.00?

When you buy retail, many times the items aren't worth what you paid. It happens with antiques, art, & jewelry. Sorry to say this.

I am hopeful that everyone's issues with Japster are settled favorably and expeditiously. But I also think it's unfair for people to post here that because she has said she is ill, that equates with scamming people.

I think she is owed the benefit of the doubt until things are proved to be otherwise. Just because you would or would not put some kinds of photos on your Facebook page, or run your business a certain way doesn't mean that's how everyone behaves.

If she is ill, I hope things improve for her soon. And I hope people involved in business transactions with her obtain satisfaction.

What makes you hopeful if the OP hasn't gotten her item or refund since August?

I had the opposite thing happen when my pearls were appraised. They appraised for three times what I paid for them. My jeweler (very high-end) told me she couldn't even come close to selling me pearls of the same quality for what Elana charged me.

I'm so sad to hear this about Elana. I'll reserve judgement until we hear from her.

What is there to reserve judgement on? If we are to believe the OP (and I do) there is no excuse. Period. If you ordered from macys or bloomingdales and for 2 months they ignored/dodged your emails and phone calls yet took your money would you still reserve judgement? If you are a buisness or store no matter how big or small, you have to send out what you've taken money for. Period. Ilness and sickness have no place in buiisness to be used as excuses. Period. What if your money manager dissapeared for 2 months due to sickness without telling you and you needed access to your funds? What if lawyer got sick and just didn't show up for a court case? Of course that wouldn't happen! You get someone to take over your current clients and stop taking new ones until your better. There is NO excuse in my book. NONE!

I'm glad to hear this. I had started to cast doubts on everything I purchased from her.

I'm also enormously relieved to hear this. I am remaining calm until I get a verdict from the appraiser. And as someone pointed out to me privately, pearls can be difficult to value properly unless the appraiser is experienced, so values can end up all over the map.

And to Vegas Long Legs: of course jewelers, like other high end sellers of rare and valuable things, have markups. Of course we are all sophisticated and experienced enough to know this. I've been on both ends of trade, and I've never seen a legitimate markup that leaves the item in question valued at 10% of it's selling price. That's a startling and attention getting markup, no matter what the arena.

I agree this is a sad and bad situation - for the buyers and for Elana. I just don't understand why it's ok to trash someone because they posted pictures on their Facebook account detailing their illness.

I sprained my arm this week and it has taken me way longer than usual to mail out books people ordered from me. I did my best to explain the delay in answering and mailing, and hope they understand. I'm not making excuses for her. I have bought from Elana and recommended her to people - so I hope, as I've said, that she can work things out as soon as possible with those who have paid and not received items. I just think people could show a little bit more compassion until the full story is known.

Caveat Emptor

Unless she gave people a phony appraisal, its buyer beware. What can you do if you over pay for an item & its worth a fraction of what you paid? To think one is above it dealing with retailers is very naive. Let it go, learn a lesson & move on. We've all been there. People can't dictate what retailers charge as a mark up.

My experience with both buying & selling of art & antiques is more than enough to know I'll never buy these items in a retail store again. I'll pay the auction house premium & still get a better deal. And that way I know for sure what I'm getting is what they claim it is.

i didn't see anyone trashing her for being sick. they were mad because she didn't send the items they paid for.

i don't think anyone was mad she was sick.

plenty of business people get sick, it happens. but they have someone take over the business while they are resting, or they close up shop. but if you are well enough to post on facebook, surely you can ship your orders or refund buyers.

Go back and read post 19 and subsequent comments that her illness seems sketchy.

Agree people have a right to be upset that they paid and did not receive anything. Unlike a lot of people posting here, I know Elana. I have bought from her and met her several times. I do believe there must be some very bad things going on in her life right now for things to have deteriorated like this. This is extremely out of character and again, I hope it is settled to the buyers' satisfaction.

has she been in the hospital for MONTHS? becuase that's how long it seems she has been doing this. And as soon as you find out you are going to be sick for a long period you halt your website - you refund people - you stop taking orders.
It's obvious after reading the threads on other sites that she has been doing malicious things.
And the pics she posted were of poison ivy - nothing so serious that she couldn't work (in fact she was well enough to take pics of her face and post them) I don't think those pics have anything to do with why she SAID she was in the hospital.

I am surprised to see that her blog and also her website on her new endeavor raising poultry have been updated recently. Seems if you can do that yourself or have others do that for you, you should be able to correspond with those who have ordered from you and sent you money.

I still find this whole situation so bizarre. I have purchased from Elana in the last year 6 necklaces and 2 pairs of earrings. Everything was great with each transaction!! I really don't believe that Elana woke up one day and decided not to bother answering her customer's emails or looking after her orders. I might be naive but I think something very serious has happened to cause her to disregard her entire business. As for the update of her blog maybe someone else is looking after it for her but does not have the same access to her orders.
I really don't know what else to say, this makes no sense at all!!

I agree, it makes no sense at all!

Vegas Long legs, dear, I´m fully aware of the difference between actual value and retail value. I wasn´t born yesterday:D
