No, loving care goes a long way to keep these bags in excellent condition - even if used regularly - for many many years. These bags can be heirlooms and handed down from Mother to daughter.

Keep the bag dry, clean and away from dust and temperature extremes. Send it to Hermes for conditioning on occasion, particularly if the leather feels dry and in need of attention to keep it supple. Enjoy and use the bag but treat it with care, it will last a lifetime and beyond.

So you mean to telel me these bags are real...and alive (barely)...and people buy them? I mean, were they left out in the rain for decades? were they buried with their original owners only to be dug up later? I cannot believe my eyes!

I don't know... some of them are rather charming. I've seen Claude working on bags that looked far worse.

Also, think about it this way -- a couple decades ago, do you think anyone could have imagined that people in 2009 would pay $$$$ for ripped/slashed/hole-ridden jeans and t-shirts?

I will confess to loving some of these banged up beauties. I wouldn't PAY big moola for them...but, I love them. The character in some of these bags is divine. That being said, some of these bags are beyond help!
