Dearest, K. I am so sorry. ❤
Thanks so much @MabelJo @Snausages and @Leilabelle. Thanks everyone for the thumbs up on H en Fil. The crystals are so tiny that I’m not afraid to lose them really. More concerned about snagging in things tbh.

Being an architectural buff I could not resist A l’Ombre des Boulevards. The b/w leaped into my hands as soon as it was released. Love the little vignettes and street scenes. Positively transports me when I study the activities going on. Happy weekend !

Lanit, this is beautiful. Thank heavens I look awful in white or I would be off searching, swimming away from ban island.
I had grail mail this week! This is one that gives me hope that eventually all my grails could be mine. I hadn’t seen this Minuit au Faubourg anywhere ever, and was figuring it may never show up on the after market. Thanks very much to @SilkCouture for giving me a heads up on it!!!

I did think this was a 70, and if so I’d love it even more, but at any rate, my perfect cw of MaF!

Wow, wow, wow. You look radiant in this. Love it.

In the late 1800s large urban areas were in crisis. The common mode of transportation at that time was a horse and buggy, with many families owing a single horse. Horses are large animals which were never intended to live in great numbers in urban areas due to the copious amounts of manure that they produce. Cities were drowning in manure, streets were covered with the poo that liquefied when it rained, sewer systems were failing, disease was spending thanks to dead horse carcasses laying around, you get the idea. Architecture even changed to lift building entrances higher to keep the slew of flowing manure out of homes. Here is a picture of a New York City street in 1893.

1893-new-york.png

This is another famous photo of a London street taken during that same era. In 1894 the Times predicted that in 50 years every street in London would be buried under 9 feet of manure.

We know the horse manure crisis was averted thanks to the invention of the automobile. This example of technology to the rescue is often cited as a reason to wait and not worry about our current crises.

Thank you for a wonderful week of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, @HermesEchidna. Many weeks I am able to select my future scarf of the day candidates ahead of time. But, given your clever and imaginative sub-themes, virtually none of the scarves I actually wore were selected in advance. This is true of my choice today as well.

One place in the US where horses remain the primary form of transportation is Mackinac Island in northern Michigan, since cars are not allowed. In 2007 actor and star of "Dirty Jobs", Mike Rowe, went to Mackinac Island and shoveled horse manure. I remember the stable hand extoling the virtues of the French Percheron horses that they used on the island, and Mike replying that he was honored to shovel such high quality Percheron poo. :amuse:

In any case, I'm delighted to be wearing my final STEM scarf of the week, which I never figured was STEM. Chevaux de France shows various breeds of French horses.

Whenever I see the Percheron on this scarf, I think of Mike Rowe shoveling their "high quality" manure, and it makes me giggle.

I'm wearing Chevaux de France as my scarf of the day, which happens to be tied to show the business end of the Percheron.

It is a beautiful knot and a perfect match with your ensemble. Can you give an insight how you accomplished the knot? I have a couple of moussies and usually I get lost when trying to knot them... do you fold them along the diagonal and then knot or something else?

Ohhh what is it? What is it?

I’m hesitant to say, bc of lurkers. Given that it’s quite over priced, it may not be that much of a risk, but it’s also new with tag still attached, so I feel like someone else may decide it’s worth paying the premium.

Stunning. I love the orange and purple. Maybe you could try a mors ring or chaine d’encre to help extend the scarf and show more of the design?

Thank you! In the first pic, I *was* using a chain and it was tied to that to leave a little space. But it wasn’t really sitting well. Maybe I need to try the Mors ring.

Good morning!

@MabelJo has just provided the perfect sedgeway to todays subtheme by posting about the meaning of horsepower. ‘Cause today we go back go the roots!
Both history and current design of Hermes is rooted in horses and the technologies related to them. Without stirrups, bridles and reins horseriding and horsepower would not have been the revolutionary invention it became for both movement of people, troops and Trade goods and for harnesseing the work power of horses for pulling vehicles, Threadmills and agricultural machinery.

I Bet most of you have a design with some horserelated technology on it? I resisted Bride de Gala for a long time until I stumbled upon the double faced edition. But horsegear is everywhere - show them to us!

The horses themselves are a result of both tradtitional and Scientific knowledge about breeding and selecting the animals for specific tasks and looks. Strong horses, fast horses, beautiful horses, fearless horses - the different breeds have been shaped by humans through time by fashion and changes in the functions of horses.

The breeding of horses (and other important animals, like cattle) was often a matter of the State, making agencies for Consulting breeders and buyers and for monitoring the quality of the national equine stock. An example is Les Haras Nationaux with the names of the French horse breeding institutions along the edge - to which Hermes has also been added as an important horse institution!

Profesional and leisure breeding of animals became extremely popular during the 19th century in the western world, and both horses, dogs, cats, pigeons, sheep, chickens, pigs and even fish were bred to fit the demand for fashion and functionalities, indeed most of the dog breeds we know today was only created since the 1850’s.
With the popularisation of Darwinisme and genetics, the mechanisms behind the breeding Industry became better understood, and specific caracters in the animals could be even more accentuated through targeted breeding - mainly for production animals and animals for shows and competitions, where the best breed would recieve prizes and praise.

Happy Saturday Scarflandia! I am traveling/babysitting this next week so my SOTDs may be a bit haphazard and sporadic. This morning my three year old granddaughter was up early and helped me select her favorite horse scarf from a file of archive pics. Later we will bundle up and greet the snow that accumulated here last night. She has not yet begun riding lessons (though she loved the experience of a pony ride!) but she very much enjoys her mother's Breyer horse collection (some of which used to be my own!) so this is a fitting choice: Chevaux de la Collection, men's 100 CS.
