I had grail mail this week! This is one that gives me hope that eventually all my grails could be mine. I hadn’t seen this Minuit au Faubourg anywhere ever, and was figuring it may never show up on the after market. Thanks very much to @SilkCouture for giving me a heads up on it!!!

I did think this was a 70, and if so I’d love it even more, but at any rate, my perfect cw of MaF!

Twins! I love this CW.

Good morning!

@MabelJo has just provided the perfect sedgeway to todays subtheme by posting about the meaning of horsepower. ‘Cause today we go back go the roots!
Both history and current design of Hermes is rooted in horses and the technologies related to them. Without stirrups, bridles and reins horseriding and horsepower would not have been the revolutionary invention it became for both movement of people, troops and Trade goods and for harnesseing the work power of horses for pulling vehicles, Threadmills and agricultural machinery.

I Bet most of you have a design with some horserelated technology on it? I resisted Bride de Gala for a long time until I stumbled upon the double faced edition. But horsegear is everywhere - show them to us!

The horses themselves are a result of both tradtitional and Scientific knowledge about breeding and selecting the animals for specific tasks and looks. Strong horses, fast horses, beautiful horses, fearless horses - the different breeds have been shaped by humans through time by fashion and changes in the functions of horses.

The breeding of horses (and other important animals, like cattle) was often a matter of the State, making agencies for Consulting breeders and buyers and for monitoring the quality of the national equine stock. An example is Les Haras Nationaux with the names of the French horse breeding institutions along the edge - to which Hermes has also been added as an important horse institution!

Hubert de Watrigant: Les Haras Nationaux

Profesional and leisure breeding of animals became extremely popular during the 19th century in the western world, and both horses, dogs, cats, pigeons, sheep, chickens, pigs and even fish were bred to fit the demand for fashion and functionalities, indeed most of the dog breeds we know today was only created since the 1850’s.
With the popularisation of Darwinisme and genetics, the mechanisms behind the breeding Industry became better understood, and specific caracters in the animals could be even more accentuated through targeted breeding - mainly for production animals and animals for shows and competitions, where the best breed would recieve prizes and praise.

Have a wonderful day!
Great post - that Races du Chevaux !!! What a rarity, and absolutely gorgeous. Does anyone actually have one? @croisette? @xincinsin? @AnnaE?

Also - not a big fan of double sided scarves, but that pastel Brides de Gala is really pretty! I see why you fell for it.

I am catching up with all the lovely posts this week on this frigid morning. Thanks to everyone for all the beauties post here! And thanks to @HermesEchidna for a fabulous intro!

I love the blues and greens in this. Stunning!
GAH - this is spectacular on you - congratulations!!
I truly love both sides of this and hope you do too!

Such a darling design, and this is a lovely color.

Woot!!
It’s a stunning scarf, and all the cws are beautiful.
Congrats on your PdeV Bandana moussie - it’s gorgeous and the color is so fun!

Beeeeyouteefull greens!

Fabulous intro and thank you for the ‘prompts‘ (ideas) because I need them!

Gorgeous colors!
Thabks, cookie! I got so, so very lucky to turn this up. I am in love!
This is lovely and as so many others have said, you are blessed to have your (skilled) grandmother in your life and sharing her talent with you @Jacq1! I remember my own so fondly-- and alsways with some needlework in her hands...

There are many many beautiful Marwaris @Awillow-- when the timing is right... I just love the gentleness of the horses faces and their beautiful eyes. Of course their costumes are gorgeous and provide the artist with so much to work with!

Thank you @MabelJo! I have the LE Katrina issue (twins with @Redbirdhermes) but I wanted one with the misspelling of Lil Hardin's name and more color options! And Beloved India is a perennial love of mine...

Your weatherman has quite a sense of humor but you look beautiful and ready to stand up to anything @bunnycat! (and thank you for the Cheval Punk enablement :winkiss:

Needs to be a Scarf Bingo category @bunnycat! Amirite @Lellabelle? And oh, my. Pickles and Snickers need their own Adventure Book series...

Thank you @AnnaE and @Maedi-- I honestly believe it is the light-- or the angle of the light. The whole city seems awash in it...even with a hard freeze approaching!

 @ninakt-- a shared scarf drawer is a good idea but tell him to be careful wearing a scarf on a motorbike!

Congratulations @Foxy trini --- it is a beauty!

Thank you both @Jereni and @Cookiefiend. The colors here in NOLA right now are purple, green and gold for Mardi Gras so my few in these colors are in heavy rotation!

Thank you dear @Croisette7-- it is a perfect green and gold Marwari for Mardi Gras season! Your blue Turqueries is wonderful (as are your lovely birds!) and this Huile Parfumee could not be more darling and perfectly matched with your windowpane check jacket and charming brooch.
Thanks, lkb. Someday I will find a marwari, I am sure. I love the jewel tones in so many of the colorways.
Happy Sunday, Scarflandia! Huge thanks to @bunnycat for leading us through Fun Week while chasing cats, climbing trees and preparing for an arctic blast of weather! Always done with inimitable style and humor too. I was in the perfect place to end this week because "cheerful chaos" is the most fun and kind way to describe New Orleans-- "the city that care forgot" (a lot of other more essential things forgot it too but that shall remain unmentioned for the moment).
Thanks also to @HermesEchidna for leading us into STEMtation this week. By serendipity I am on theme with my SOYD. I wore Petit Duc to an annual January tradition of High Tea at the Windsor Court Hotel. Petit Duc is the carriage of our beloved Hermes and the scarf's full title is "Projet de Voiture Petit-duc Bateau" featuring a carriage anatomy graphic, handwritten text, lined background and other plans for its design.

Lkb, Petit Duc is one of my favorites. I hadn't seen this one. Very pretty! I have a certain fondness for the 140 summer silks. I am looking for the right blue one to fill a hole in my collection. And Mardi Gras! Someday I hope to be in Nola for that. Your fascinator is fabulous.

What a fantastic post and start for this week HE!!!! Love all your selections and what a technology find on that Dreamer scarf! And Double Leopardy - now there's reason to "need" a scarf....

I do have some math to share for this week, it just happens. :D

Here's one I wore sometime last week (or maybe it was the week before...it all blurs together when you work at home).

One of my first mousselines was a 90cm called Vinci by Francoise Heron, which was based on this labyrinth and geometric knot design from Leonardo da Vinci. And of course, da Vinci was not only a master artist, but also made many many scientific and mathematic geometry explorations in his work. I don't recall enough of my art history, but I think it would be a safe bet much of his work in perspective was based in mathematical precision. A true blend of the art and sciences.

Bunny, this is my favorite cw of Vinci. It suits you so well. ❤
Croisette, you are unfailingly elegant. #goals. :girlsigh:
My other scarfmail last week was Tresors d’Un Artiste… this was a scarf I added to my list early but then decided I wasn’t sure about the color. I totally bought it on a whim the other week when I saw it on Fashionphile for under retail in brand new condition, with no analysis of what I would wear it with.

I was somewhat prepared to hate it by the time it got here, esp since in the meantime I found the red d’Orphee but…
holy delectable deliciousness Batman!!!
It’s sooooo amazing?!

I am gonna say this is more or less theme adjacent. It’s about the tools of an artist as opposed to a scientist or engineer, but they need a toolbox for their work too, and I imagine an ingenious STEM engineer could craft something clever with what the artist has here.
Jereni, this is a gorgeous tresors on you! I am glad this beauty found her way home to you. It was meant to be.
Today is about Scientific explorations - about coluring in the white areas of the maps and reaching the final frontiers.

Certainly many expeditions through history have had less noble motives than a quest for knowledge, and narratives of especially European expedition history are in need of some serious decolonization.

But let us try to find the examples and designs which still hold some beauty, regardless of harsh historical facts, and find scarves which tell us stories of human urges to explore the planet, time and space.

Look how this one leopard (of the Douze Leopards) is Dreaming about travels to unknown places!

View attachment 5930127

Sandra Laroche’s two expedition scarves, Per Astra ad Astra and Le Geographe are obvious examples , and there are also certain polar-related scarves, which I , alas, cannot model in person, but I am sure somebody in here will bring them out. And there must be more!?

Le Geographe - based on the Baudin expedition which set sail in 1800 with the two ships Géographe and Naturaliste to map the coast of Australia. Both zoologists and botanists were a part of the expedition to also record the wildlife and fauna of the continent. Four of the members of the party are portraied on the corners of the scarf, which also feautures the ship itself, an Australian map and examples of Said wildlife.

Another Laroche design Show the travels of French naval officer Lapérouse who in 1785 lead an expedition around the Globe. The design show a number of the places and people he encountered along the way, like in Hawai, Alaska, Mauritius, Japan, Russia and Australia. The expedition and the lives of its members was abruptly ended when both of the two ships of the expedition wrecked on Vaniroko - an Island seen in the center of the scarf. The ships were named La Boussole ( a compas) and L’Astrolabe (an instrument used for determining latitude by measuring attitudes of stars).

When the need to explore hit us, not even the sky is the limit, and space race, sputniks, shuttles, sattelites and rockets are plentifull in so many designs, reflecting the fascination of space travel. This is an area where my collection is painfully inadequate - but again Nothing but a Dreamer rescues me. And Rocket Racoon (of the Guardians of the Galaxy…)

Thank you, HermesEchidna, great post and love your examples. Congratulations on your Pytheas! And love the dreaming Leopard.
Agrume, what a great story behind your Offrandes. I think @Cookiefiend has this elusive colorway as well? The most elevated version of this scarf, I think. Love!
So much creativity with the first two themes of the year. Loving everyone’s contributions. Thank you @bunnycat and @HermesEchidna for leading the charge. I never got to post last week and would love to add my one, late. The top scarf I thought of relating to week 1 with levity was the fun loving rascals on Les Triples. It is just a happy making scarf to me. I saw some other scarfies had the same thoughts. And @Living.la.vida.fifi where are those black and white striped stand boxes located in Paris? I would love to go visit there this summer.

And @Pirula reminded me about the connections we can make with family and scarves, AND science/math haha. My son is also studying stem in college. I bought metamorphose d’un carre because of the origami on it and my son’s love of origami. It requires precise folding and, at times, a lengthy blueprint of folds to get them just right, along with math for the right proportions. There are also tools used when you get real serious so your folds are perfect.
Most kids first foray into paper folding is with paper airplanes. A time honored science experiment in schools to measure who can get their paper airplane to travel the furthest. My son’s school did at least.
I know there was a recent scarf design with a bunch of paper airplanes on it! In a corner?? If anyone can remember which design it was I would greatly appreciate it!! In fact if I think about it there are a couple I have seen in the whimsical design category that have paper airplanes on it.

So here is my gav. I usually wear gavs in my hair. And here is my tattoo tribute to my son. I have another origami tattoo on the way on my leg.

There was an exhibition on origami in 1959 called “Plane Geometry and Fancy Figures," which was held in the United States, taking place at The Cooper Union in New York. So right there is a math connection to origami.

NERD ALERT— And my last nerding out on science, math and origami is about a club at MIT called OrigaMIT. My son was obsessed. The club had a project making a 3D Menger Sponge from business cards. The Menger sponge is a fractal curve. It is a three-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional Cantor set and two-dimensional sierpinski carpet.
View attachment 5930240
For those in UK, the MegaMenger project to make 20 separate level 3 Menger sponges across the world from business cards and eventually connect them for a level 4 was started at Queen Mary University in London. OrigaMIT has one level 3 on display.
Call me crazy but wasn’t there a scarf with a menger sponge on it? Didn’t we talk about this on a sotd thread?? I’ll have to do a search.
Soooo long story short..origami’s connection to math and science on my Gav, and cocotttes de soie, and I am sure on many other designs I am not thinking of. But would love a list if anyone finds origami on their scarf  . I might have to do a separate thread asking for scarfies origami finds
Cocottes de soie too
View attachment 5930246
Nomad, the pink on that triples is one of the best pinks, I think. Lovely on you. And I love the nerding out on origami and fractals. Yikes. I was deluded thinking I was going to major in math and poli sci when I entered college. Calc 2 freshman year and it was humanities, baby! Love cocottes too - it is a great design.

Mr Agrume definitely needs to read this blog, too. I managed to get one bonus scarf when he led me on an unexpectedly difficult (for me) mountain hike. Going back was no option, and only the thought of what scarf it would be kept me going.

Super clever and so true for me as well @violetkool. I am an expert consumer of what other people bake!

I agree @Croisette7-- he often helps me choose and is a real fan of the classic and iconic designs. And as for the fascinator, I will model it during the festivities!

Echec au Roi is such a cool design and this CSGM is the most beautiful neutral! Love this cheerful Kachinas, too @Croisette7.

An absolutely amazing post in every concieveble way @Nomad! I was working my way backwards while having coffee and it has taken me three times as logn because I am googling everything you mention. Fascinating. It is so true that old expression "By your children you'll be taught." So wonderful that his imagination was sparked by this and that it led to so much creative joy and learning for you both. And to find an expression of all this in your H scarves is, as we say, the most exciting lagniappe of all. And thank you for bringing Cocottes de Soie and Metamorphose d'un Carre to my own attention. I have the one and am expecting the other on account of your enthusiasm and enablement.
Love this, lkb. I have to admit I had to get out the dictionary for lagniappe. Brilliant.

All three you posted are wonderful @Pirula but I especially love this fun and happy Pattisserie on you-- that pink hem! (and thank you for the Pantin City compliment)

These are so great @xincinsin! The whimsey of the latter in particular. I would just love to read the entries...

Beautiful-- we are twins on the first two and sisters on the last. Lovely bag and jewelry combos too. Your pup is adorabl @lanit!

I, um, may have had the same confused regrets and followed your path @Awillow! It looks beautiful on you. Glad you remedied the situation...

An amazing addition. I love this cw of this design too!! So many good ones. It’s perfect on you! And twins w @LKBNOLA

Ahhhhmazing post! I love your collection and knowledge and humor. You killed me w pangs of regret with your photo of the travel dreaming leaopard haha. And congratulations on your pytheas. We are twins! It’s a special design w so much history on it

Brilliant connection to theme. I love that design!

A popular design and I see why here. So soft and beautiful in this cw

Beautiful! Translates so well in both formats

Woo hoo! Congratulations! It is def in theme for math. And I have always loved the metallics in this cw. It was tough for me to resist..at retail price. But wouldn’t have been for me either in reseller price.

Fascinating post! There was a gav with an eye trick of duckling and rabbit too.

Awe yay to scarfie get together! In Paris?

There just wasn’t a bad cw in this design. Love this

Oh wow. Such a pretty lavender.

Gorgeous in this more monochromatic cw w that fun pop of yellow I see. The peach one is so gorg too. So feminine
Thanks, nomad!

I've been wearing theme-related scarves all week, and taking terrible photos of them, but completely failing to post them. By chance I have one each of S, T, E, and M, which I'm going to run with.

Science - The music of the spheres is an ancient astronomical concept regarding the patterns of celestial bodies as they move over what were then thought to be spherical orbits - whether the music was real or metaphorical depended on your viewpoint. Musique Des Spheres is one of my favorite scarves, that I have in a few colors/formats.
View attachment 5933239

Technology - Memoire Vive was shown beautifully before, and here it is again.
View attachment 5933241

Engineering - When I first started collecting H scarves, I found it vastly amusing that they would make scarves about very ordinary things. Sometimes it works; sometimes the scarves leave me cold, but Alternateur definitely works.
View attachment 5933243

And Mathematics - the Golden Ratio is again an ancient idea, but in this case it survives into the modern day in practical use and not just romantic symbolism. Nombre d'Or is another men's cotton/silk 100. On the runway it was displayed crinkled but the crinkles iron out more thoroughly than plissee-pleats do. (The wrinkles are entirely of my own invention. It pays homage to the selfie stick, capturing Wayne Fromm’s brilliant innovation that has become such a staple in our social media-driven world. Loving how it represents the evolving blend of technology and fashion. Jonathan Burton and Hermès have really outdone themselves with this piece. Popping in - back home after a quick but tiring work trip to San Francisco as I had red eyes each direction. I need to catch up on all of the posts! My SOTDs were acte iii, scene I, la selle imaginaire and animapolis. I copied @Redbirdhermes and had a two scarf day. Wore la selle outdoors with my coat but underneath wore the animapolis for my meetings etc. Tied it so that the Jaguar could be snuggled up by my neck. Happy Friday all - I’m gonna get my zzzzs while it keeps snowing here.
Beautiful-- glad you can get some rest @Foxy trini -- love seeing the new Animaplois in action and delighted to be twins on both CSGMs!
Thanks so much @MabelJo @Snausages and @Leilabelle. Thanks everyone for the thumbs up on H en Fil. The crystals are so tiny that I’m not afraid to lose them really. More concerned about snagging in things tbh.

Happy Friday Scarfies!

Horsepower (hp) is a unit of measurement of power, or the rate at which work is done, usually in reference to the output of engines or motors. The term was adopted in the late 18th century by Scottish engineer James Watt to compare the output of steam engines with the power of draft horses. It was later expanded to include the output power of other types of piston engines, as well as turbines, electric motors and other machinery.

A common legend states that the unit was created when one of Watt's first customers, a brewer, specifically demanded an engine that would match a horse, and chose the strongest horse he had, driving it to the limit. In that legend, Watt accepted the challenge and built a machine that was actually even stronger than the figure achieved by the brewer, and the output of that machine became the horsepower. (Thanks Wikipedia!)

Les Artisans d'Hermes is my SOTD. I'm enamored with the exquisite expression of the horse's face and now I'm wondering how much horsepower this horse-motorcycle-hybrid-badass has?

Have a wonderful weekend!
A great choice @MabelJo-- I love this one too!

Happy Saturday Scarflandia! I am traveling/babysitting this next week so my SOTDs may be a bit haphazard and sporadic. This morning my three year old granddaughter was up early and helped me select her favorite horse scarf from a file of archive pics. Later we will bundle up and greet the snow that accumulated here last night. She has not yet begun riding lessons (though she loved the experience of a pony ride!) but she very much enjoys her mother's Breyer horse collection (some of which used to be my own!) so this is a fitting choice: Chevaux de la Collection, men's 100 CS.
