Rumors of Department Store Chanel shakedown

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

This sounds more plausible than some of the rumors that were posted.

Although, my NM SA is still sending me photos of bags, jewelry, shoes, etc... so she's obviously still being paid to sell despite being in a dept store.

I’ve heard that some department store SAs are still helping their client source bags, even if they don’t earn commission on the sale, just so they can maintain that client relationship and earn commission on other items the client might purchase.

Not mine, I’m not lucrative lol

I’m guessing we don’t know the accurate pay/commission structure for every designer in each store

Well....the boutique SAs haven't been working off individual commission plans for years now. They have team targets and are compensated when those targets are hit. My SA constantly reminds me that she isn't on commission when I come in. As far as I am aware......customers can still buy classic flaps and other bags as long as they are in stock in store. I don't know why a department store Chanel would be any different. Unless you have a bad apple SA who is trying to earn commission on categories Chanel still applies commission rewards to for non-Chanel managed locations (e.g. RTW, shoes) and using this "carrot" as a way to get that? In which case, switch SAs haha. At Hermes, a client's profile is reviewed by the store manager and they are individually approved for a quota bag twice a year. As of now, Chanel is not doing that and you can buy one classic flap a month. I think it's too early to assume Chanel will go in that direction. The classic bags are so expensive now, that personally, I feel the SAs are eagerly showing off their inventory when I come in.

Edit: A couple of posts above mentioned that the boutiques are still paying their SAs commission. Not sure what's real anymore.
You noticed more stock and more selection in the stores now too?

Chanel is pulling out of my local Neiman Marcus and another location in February. Time to find another SA…ugh!
Is a Chanel store opening nearby? My local NM sells Chanel in two small boutiques—one for handbags/accessories and the other for clothes. There is a small Chanel boutique—handbags/accessories—in the same mall but construction is well underway for a huge, full-service Chanel. It is scheduled to open in Spring 2024. My SA at the NM boutique moved to the existing Chanel boutique in anticipation of the larger store opening. She said she didn’t know if the NM boutique would be closed but she wanted to be prepared if it did. She is a rockstar so I am sticking with her. I do miss the credit I get for Chanel purchases as part of the NM rewards program, though. (As an aside, my NM had a small VCA boutique that closed shortly before a stand-alone VCA store opened in the mall.)

I‘ve heard rumors we may be getting a stand alone boutique in Boca, if true, not until 2025 at least. The NM boutique is closing in February and the SAs are not sure where they will be going.

Do you only get NM rewards if you use their CC?

I stopped using NM for points years ago. I get cash back on my Visa and it's a better benefit at 2.65% even on double NM day.

My Saks SA told me she no longer gets commissions from Chanel. At first I couldn't figure out why she had no interest when I texted her about a Chanel item and then she explained how they hired a bunch of people at $30/hr but she can't afford to work for that since she has three kids in college.
