Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught and Strathearn 1850-1942 was the 7th child of Queen Victoria

He entered the military at 16 and had a distinguished career throughout the Empire for over 40 years - he met President Ulysses S Grant in 1870!!

He lived at Clarence House in London and his country residence was Bagshot Park in Surrey

Any time I see a reference to Bagshot Park I can't help thinking of Bagshot Row from "The Hobbit" and "The Lord Of The Rings". I know that Queen Margrethe of Denmark is a great Tolkien fan but I wonder if any of the BRF grew up reading Tolkien. If any of them would have been fans of LOTR, I think it would have been Charles.

The late Queen might have been a bit too busy in 1954 when LOTR was published to read it and I think the trilogy didn't really take off until the 1960s when the college kids (including me) discovered it, but The Hobbit goes back to 1937 and she would have been 10 or 11 when The Hobbit came out, just about the right age to appreciate it. I wish I could see the new miniature books that Camilla recently added to the library in Elizabeth's and Margaret Rose's "Little Cottage" (or is there a smaller dollhouse inside the castle somewhere? I'll have to watch the video again ). I hope there's a miniature set of Tolkien in there somewhere.

£for £ I think Edward got a pretty good real estate deal I think Bagshot is better than Gatcombe or Royal lodge

Princess Mary was very close to her brother David and didn’t attend the Queens wedding ( I’ll health was quoted but she was well enough to visit the duke of Windsor) she did attend the queens coronation later but it looks like relations were still fairly strained after she chose her side

Shocked to read that Lady Colin Campbell wrote in her book on the Queen Mother that she was a surrogate and her mother was the family cook!! Allegedly a story put about by the duke of Windsor as why he called her “cookie”. “Lady “ Colin Campbell who was christened and brought up as a boy George until the age of 18 when he/she had surgery
