The Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II is expected to be celebrated in June 2022 in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth[1] to mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952.[2] In the United Kingdom, an extra bank holiday will be created and the traditional May bank holiday weekend will be moved to the start of June, to create a special four-day Jubilee weekend.[3] The British government has promised a 'once-in-a-generation show' that will "mix the best of British ceremonial splendour and pageantry with cutting edge artistic and technological displays".[4] So long as Queen Elizabeth remains on the throne until 6 February 2022, this will be the first time any British monarch has celebrated a platinum jubilee.[5]

Carly Ledbetter, writing in the Huffington Post, suggested that the fact that planning for the Platinum Jubilee was underway meant that any rumours that Elizabeth was planning to step down when she reached the age of 95 in 2021, in favour of her son Charles, were false.

I hope we will all live to see it happen.

Queen Elizabeth is already Britain's longest reigning monarch, but in 2022 she will mark another milestone: her Platinum Jubilee, a celebration of her 70th year on the throne. To commemorate the occasion, the UK is adding an extra bank holiday in June, and moving shifting one (the May Spring Bank Holiday) to create a special four-day weekend, from June 2-5.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said that the celebrations for this "truly historic moment" will "bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together," per the BBC. He added that planning was already underway for a "jubilee weekend to remember—one that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendor and pageantry with cutting edge artistic and technological display."

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told Town & Country, “The Platinum Jubilee offers an opportunity for The Queen to express her thanks for the support and loyalty Her Majesty has received throughout her reign. The Queen hopes that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to join the celebrations.”

Though the Queen will technically mark her 70th anniversary in February, it was decided that this Jubilee—like her Golden and Diamond Jubilees before it, which commemorated her 50th and 60th years on the throne—should be celebrated in June, when her coronation ceremony was held in 1953. Not only does the month offer more favorable weather, but the monarch is known not to celebrate the day she became Queen, as it is also the anniversary of her father King George VI's death. Generally, she is known to spend Accession Day privately, in "quiet reflection."

Will she have a new tiara made? Certainly a new dress and hat.
Ooooooh, there is so much to plan! Yay! A party - finally. Cheers

Time to select my tree—
The Queen's Green Canopy[edit]
Main article: The Queen's Green Canopy
A campaign, known as 'The Queen's Green Canopy', will be launched in May 2021, ahead of the Jubilee in 2022. People across the United Kingdom are expected to 'Plant a Tree for the Jubilee' to mark the milestone. To help the environment and make local areas greener, people will be urged to create this 'special gift' for the Queen, in her Platinum Jubilee year. In a statement, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson said, "As we celebrate Her Majesty's incredible 70 years of service, I encourage everyone to get behind this scheme, and go 'Plant a Tree for the Jubilee'."[1

When I started this thread yesterday, I was half afraid I might get reproached for being too early..
Then I would have said: "Well, it's never too early for good news, isn't it?"
But now I see that my topic is welcomed, and I am glad because of it.

Time to select my tree—

I will also plant a tree - and will call it "Elizabeth!"

Brits invited to plant a tree to celebrate Queen's 70-year reign in 2022

Brits around the UK have been invited to plant a tree in honour of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The project, known as the Queen's Green Canopy, will see communities, charities, councils, cities, businesses and landowners unite to plant healthy native trees that will thrive.

Led together by Cool Earth, the government and The Woodland Trust, the planet-friendly initiative has been praised for being a "fitting way" to mark the first time a British sovereign has been on the throne for seven decades.

What a good idea!

We should have street parties like we did for the silver jubilee to celebrate life

What a co-incidence!
I was thinking of the Silver Jubilee just now!

Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 1977

The Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II marked the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the thrones of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms. It was celebrated with large-scale parties and parades throughout the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth throughout 1977, culminating in June with the official "Jubilee Days", held to coincide with the Queen's Official Birthday. The anniversary date itself was commemorated in church services across the land on 6 February 1977, and continued to be for the rest of that month. In March, preparations started for large parties in every major city of the United Kingdom, as well as for smaller ones for countless individual streets throughout the country.

Memories come back to me now:
It was in 1977 when in went by car (in my Renault 4 or R4 then) from Dover to Dundee, and from there on to the Isle auf Skye.
Partly on motorways, partly on country roads through towns and villages.
And I remember how many towns and villages were beautifully decorated because of the Silver Jubilee.
