RIMOWA, Anyone?

I bought the Rimowa Topas last week and I love it. I agree that the aluminum makes it very sturdy to push through the airport. Oddly it did not fit in wheels first on an AA 777 - I had to turn it sideways - but it fit easily on AA 737. It also fit into the AA luggage sizer (I just dropped it in versus putting it on its side) . AA didnt ask me but I saw one and just tried it for the heck of it.

There is a hybrid one that falls between the aluminium and air. That is a bit heavier than the air but has the handle you are looking for as well as front pockets. I have RA so the weight is a big concern for me too. I have the salsa air children's luggage (I am 163cm) it's smaller than 22in so works well for me and the kids can drive it too. Also never an issue in overhead bin. My husband has the hybrid one. We have had them for years and love them.
are you referring to the Limbo line? thanks

Hello. It's the salsa deluxe hybrid carry on. It has soft pockets on the front. It's a great bag.
Hello Mcmd11,

Thanks for the information. I called the store the other day and they Are trying to talk me out of the matte black and suggestion the Limbo because it is part alum and part poly. But I'll check out the salsa deluxe hybrid.

Can't believe I never updated my post from when I was deciding b/t the Topas and Limbo IATA carry ons! I ended up choosing the Topas and have been obsessed with it!! The first trip I took it on was to Sweden & Iceland, along with DH and I's new (at the time) Salsa trunks which we LOVE. I've made several trips with my Topas since then, and have only had to gate check it one time on a smaller plane. Here's a few pics from some travels...ImageUploadedByPurseForum1482809113.469919.jpgImageUploadedByPurseForum1482809142.048394.jpgImageUploadedByPurseForum1482809170.936959.jpg

Do you find the trunks go overweight easily?

We haven't had a single issue with the trunks going overweight even when stuffed full, when empty they're actually really light! (Definitely lighter then my Tumi suitcase in the picture.) Having the deeper section is so convenient and easy to pack, it's kind of like putting stuff into a big Rubbermaid tote instead of a suitcase...there's so many different ways you can arrange things to fit. I don't think either DH or I could ever go back to a regular suitcase! It's also nice that when you have them upright to wheel around there's a nice flat square space to set other bags, etc. on (instead of the narrow top on a regular suitcase). I do use packing cubes to keep things organized in the deep section.

Hi!

Here's a little hint/trick that works exceptionally well with the Rimowa Salsa series. Nothing special, but some might not have thought about utilizing this "feature" in this way. (It obviously also works with other suitcases that have a "maintenance access" on the inside that is not glued to the hardshell ;) )

My "Problem": I always travel with expensive "edc"-stuff that can not go into carry on. And/or I buy something expensive on location that also can't go in carry on. Shipping is also not always an option.

Now there are a lot of tricks - put it in socks, put socks into the pocket of trousers. Put it in the toiletry kit, put toiletry kit in the middle of the suitcase... All great advice but still fairly easy accessible.

So here's the "maintenance access" for the carry handle on the inside of the Rimowa Salsa.

When open it looks like this
IMG_2073.jpg

No you can put whatever you want into this new compartment ;)
IMG_2075.jpg

Close it. ;)

Now the great thing about this is, the zipper when closed is on top - your stuff is at the bottom. Whoever wants to quickly grab something from your suitcase can't do so because he/she needs to open up the suitcase almost completely, unload it & open the zipper... It's really hard to get in if you try without unpacking.

Of course, it doesn't help when the thief has time - but a quick grab is close to impossible. Especially with TSA keys floating around everywhere I think it's pretty important to have a little extra barrier to protect yourself from theft.

Like I said, nothing special - just a little trick I do and I found worthwhile sharing. Maybe it's not even all to unknown?

Kind regards,
Oliver

Has anyone tried to fit the classic flight iata in the united airlines sizer or even the topas iata? I'm debating between the two.

I have the salsa deluxe cabin in black and even though the dimensions seem too big for the sizer, it actually fits perfectly. I'm just not happy with how much this bag scuffs.

Looking for an aluminum cabin for domestic flights.
