RIMOWA, Anyone?

Keeping the thread alive ... I fell in love with the look of Rimowa from looking at TPFer photos in the Goyard threads. It just looked so chic. I bought an IATA carry on Salsa Deluxe in a Bloomingdales exclusive silver color. Loved it so much that I went back and got the 26" in the same color. I find I love the clamshell; I can pack so much (and in an organized fashion). They've both been checked and still look wonderful. I'm debating if I buy one more in family. Would you all recommend a 29" or is that too big? I could always buy a second 26". Would love some feedback. Thanks!

OK I have a few questions for you guys. I'm considering getting a rimowa carry on. After my last flight I'm over the carry-on I've been using. For those of you who have used both the aluminum and the polycarbonate do you really notice the difference in weight? I love the look of the aluminum over but worry about the weight. When researching it online it seems like such a nominal difference can you even tell? This is important for me since I have a shoulder injury so I want it to be as easy as possible to lift up/out of the over head compartment. If I go the polycarbonate route which style do you guys recommend. They kind of almost look the same in pictures the only notable difference was the salsa air seemed to have a one stem handle vs a two stem handle(for a lack of a better description lol). Also I enjoy throwing whatever handbag I'm using on top while toting the bag around in feel like the single stem handle probably won't be as helpful as one with two stems for bag to lean against. I also wonder if the sungle stem handle really affects how easy it is to manoeuvre the bag around. The current things I dislike about my current carry on is it doesn't roll as smoothly as I would like(it has 4 wheels but still not working as well as I'd like). The telescopic handle doesn't feel stable when rolling about even on smooth surfaces. My current bag is also expandable which is why I think I'm having trouble with it manoeuvring as smoothly as I'd like. I'm half thinking it's partially because of the wheels and partially because of the ability to expand it's not as stable it allows for more wiggling around. I really felt like both outbound and homebound I struggled to move my current bag around as easily I would have liked it to have. Also a noob question I don't travel internationally but I do plan on it within the next few years. Is the 22" carry-on acceptable for international travel for some reason I thought the international carry-on max was 21".

I have both the Salsa Air and the Salsa. To answer your questions as good as possible: I think it makes a difference if you go for classic aluminum or polycarbonate: every ounce makes a difference to me. I get more and more sensitive to weight, and I am happy with every bit that I can spare. That's why I went with Salsa Air in the first place - they tried to reduce as much weight as possible. And while I appreciate this the "one stem handle" i a bit difficult to deal with when I try to put my laptop gag on top of the suitcase. So now I use the Salsa Air for leisure trips with a handbag only and the Salsa for business trips. Other than that the handle of the Salsa Air works perfectly fine!
I don't know about the 1'' difference but I would assume that they get the dimensions right... I often wonder what people can take to the cabin with them!

I've used my Rimowa on international flights a bunch of times with no sizing issues, although I usually fly at least business class so there might be less competition for overhead space. If you put your bag on top of your suitcase when walking, then I suggest going with the double-stem; the single-stem is just not as stable. That said, I have never had any issue maneuvering my single-stem Rimowa carry-ons (on carpet, halls, sidewalk, street). Finally, a couple of pounds makes a difference to me. Have you seen the Rimowa Bossa Nova line? It's a hybrid metal frame and polycarbonate body and about 1kg lighter than the full aluminum.

Thanks for the feedback you two! I guess I should nix the topas at least for now, maybe if my shoulder gets better I can consider it. But it's been over a year since my injury so I'm probably as good as I'm going to be in that respect. If I travel with my dad he can always help me but that won't fly when traveling alone. I think I'll check out the salsa air, salsa deluxe, limbo, and the bossa nova IRL and see which one feels the best weight wise. I appreciate the feedback back since the only stores that carries this brand are all a hour drive away from me. This will help me to be able to focus on specific lines and hopefully not get too distracted.

I love the aluminum, but due to the heavy weight I prefer the polycarbonate.
I usually fly at least business but domestic mostly eco, so the weight matters someway somehow.

Can highly recommend the Bolero Multiwheel Cabin Trolley IATA 55 cm.
There is also a bigger version, but this is slightly too big and they might force you to check it in.

I got to check them out on vacation. And I'm still not 100% but right now I'm leaning towards the salsa air. It was notably lighter than the salsa deluxe to me at least. And while I liked the interior of the deluxe it somehow seemed smaller than the air. The topas while gorgeous are way too heavy for me. Especially when I add all my junk to it. Still debating on the two because of the single handle of the air.

Hope it's not too late, but here's my reply as an owner of both a Salsa Air and Topaz carry on:

- the weight difference is significant, also if your airline is strict on the weight you can take with you on board
- the aluminum is a lot more comfortable to move around due to the extra weight though! I usually have a laptop bag or my Birkin sitting on top of the carry on and the aluminum rolls around with less force than the salsa air. The single handle of the Salsa Air also makes the bag on top fall off easier so I have to grab the bag more rightly, resulting in more force needed to move the whole thing around

In general I'd choose the aluminum over the polycarbonate since it is more comfortable to move/navigate.

Has anyone flying in the US had problems with carry-on size restrictions? If I understand the dimensions correctly the max carry on size at many US carriers is a little smaller.

Thanks for the feedback. I still haven't bought one yet. Unfortunately for me weight is a deal breaker for me I have a shoulder injury and lifting and reaching over shoulder height is extremely difficult for me. I'm leaning towards the salsa air ATM even with the single handle I'm not big on. You did bring up a good point about the weight of the topa probably the reason why it moves around so easily.

There is a hybrid one that falls between the aluminium and air. That is a bit heavier than the air but has the handle you are looking for as well as front pockets. I have RA so the weight is a big concern for me too. I have the salsa air children's luggage (I am 163cm) it's smaller than 22in so works well for me and the kids can drive it too. Also never an issue in overhead bin. My husband has the hybrid one. We have had them for years and love them.

The childrens' luggage is great: I wanted to get it but as I am 5ft8 (173 cm) I am too tall to use it. Sizewise it is perfect for travelling light.
