RIMOWA, Anyone?

You're gonna think I'm crazy but I was furiously searching the web and turns out there are services in Germany that will give you an address, receive the package and ship it for you to the USA for a fee. It ate into the savings I got but at the end of the day, it saved me $600+ for the two carryons. It's almost a wash if I had bought it in Paris and gotten the VAT back. I'll keep you posted on how it goes when they ship it to MyGermany and back to me.

For those of you who live in the EU, RUN don't walk to get this deal!!!

Thank you CrackBerryCream for all your help and encouragement!

Would you mind sending me the info on the shipping service? Thank you so much. I would love to be able to get in on the order.

Hi betty.lee - the special was for this past weekend as CrackBerryCream had mentioned. I went on the site this morning and it no longer had the buy 2 and get one 1/2 off. Here is the site that I ordered from: https://www.koffer-direkt.de

However, it looks like this site and others in Germany do occasionally provide a discount code that offers a % off. You just have to calculate for yourself whether it's cheaper with the shipping and customs charge vs. buying in the US. The special really made my discount worth the hassle.

There are a few sites that offer mail forwarding. I went with MyGermany (http://www.mygermany.com/) but I can't vouch for them yet because I haven't received the luggages. It's very straightforward - you register with the site and in the case of MyGermany, pay 1-euro which you can do via Paypal. They give you a shipping address and then, you order and pay via Paypal but ship to this German address. One thing I noticed was that if you leave the billing address the same as shipping, it saves you a bunch in shipping (free vs. 100-euros). Strange system glitch on their end.

We're going on a trip next week and wanted to get DH a salsa in the same size as my Topas IATA 52 since carrying it on has never been an issue. I first ordered the Salsa 22 from Saks, but when it came it was significantly deeper than my Topas. I then ordered a Salsa 22 from Zappos, and made sure the dimensions in the Zappos listing were the same as how they listed my IATA 52 (also bought from them)...it came today and is the same size as my Topas. It's confusing that there are different sizes within the same carry on model! All 4 of the Rimowas we've kept have been from Zappos, and I highly recommend ordering from them. Each one came in a sealed Rimowa box (inside the Zappos box), as opposed to ones I've ordered from Saks and Barneys that were just wrapped in packing material. (The Saks one shipped from a store and had probably been out on the floor.) Considering how much they cost I like getting one brand new in the box. :smile:View attachment 3704195View attachment 3704196View attachment 3704197View attachment 3704198
After all the research this weekend, I can tell you why they are different sizes. One has a model number that has 52 which is a smaller depth (at 7.9") vs. the 53 which is at a 9" depth. Check the Rimowa tags that are attached to the luggage or look online. The weird thing is that when you buy, the websites call them the same exact thing so you really have to check the dimensions and the actual item number to notice this difference.

Betty.lee - if you're keen on doing this, I feel like it's only a matter of time that this special will come around again. So, it's good to sign up with this type of service so you're ready to go when they do. I'll let you guys know as soon as I get the bags on how easy or difficult it went.

Thanks I actually did go all the way to adding to cart and payment page etc and it wouldn't let me check out based on my delivery address. Perhaps, I wasn't understanding correctly. Maybe I'll try again. Thank you.

Please see tustin's experience. The website's seem to not have updated their shipping pages, so you are right that it doesn't work with a US shipping address.

Thanks you guys! I'll definitely keep an eye out. I'm really wanting a topas stealth and the 53 is so steep here in Hawaii.

I live in Europe and don't remember any experience with US carriers. I can only say that the size was never an issue on any of my flights from/in Europe.

Any issues on Lufthansa? I just bought one of their cheap hand baggage fares and was planning to take a Topas IATA size and a neverfull. Do they stop you and weigh everything? It is a short flight within Europe. I dont have any status on star alliance. thanks in advance

The size was never an issue with Lufthansa. But they might weigh the Topas, depending on your luck. I have a portable luggage scale, so can pack accordingly. Would suggest packing heavier items into the Neverfull temporarily (until you get that papertag saying cabin luggage or until after thr security check) and then repack them afterwards.

Hi all! So far so good with the forwarding company! It's a really straightforward process. The bag was sent to this facility in 2 days. I got an email stating that it's in the warehouse...their service includes opening the boxes to inspect the items for damage so they took a picture.

Then, you select the shipping options (DHL or FedEx) so by next week, the bags should be here.

Hope they don't get damaged in the process!

I wish you good luck. Usually nothing should happen to the suitcases. I once had a forwarding company for USA to Austria for some cosmetics (Colourpop, doesn't ship to Austria) and the only bitter thing was shipping ended up more exp. than the products themselves as I chose DHL over USPS. And taxes came on top...

That is so funny that you mention ColourPop because I just saw my good friend in Luxembourg on this last trip. Her daughter asked me to bring some eye shadows from US - I hadn't even heard of this company so they must advertise more overseas. Yes, the items are very small and relatively inexpensive so I can imagine the shipping must have cost more than the products!! Plus, for some odd reason, it's ridiculously expensive to ship things from the US abroad. The US Postal Service is on its last legs so there is no longer a cheap option to send anything to Europe like we used to.

I am now debating on whether I should order some Pierre Herme yogurt macarons and Basler lackerli to send back to the US!!!

Thanks to social media my shopping list is made up of global sources

IMO sending from Europe to US is even more exp. But then again shipping in Austria is more expensive than in Germany, so I'm glad you can still save something ordering the suitcases here.

Regarding the macarons: I think their shelf life is only a couple of days (when they're well cooled), so I wouldn't order any unless someone will transport them personally for you. Unless it's a specialized food logistics service warehouses aren't cooled at all (at least that's what our shipping providers told me).

Hi ladies, glad to have found this thread! I've decided to get the Salsa Deluxe luggage either size 77cm or 81cm in black but there is only one stockist here in Melbourne Australia. I have had a look at the Koffer website that was discussed earlier in this thread and my understanding is that they do not ship to Australia? I have had a look at selfridges online and they ship Rimowa to Australia although they don't have the luggage I am after. Does anyone else have any reputable sites for purchasing Rimowa luggage to Aus? I've done a quick search but there are so many fake websites out there unfortunately. The salsa deluxe in the size i'm after is $1200 here and on that koffer website it comes to about $750 after exchange rates.
