RIMOWA, Anyone?

I have both the Salsa Air and Alum (Topaz) as cabin bags. I prefer the Topaz, but have to be very careful not to get over the weight limit for carry ons... ironically it's more comfortable to push around due to its weight. My Salsa Air got a crack after 5 years which cannot be repaired. Can't happen with the alum. The Salsa Air on the other hand is very light. So you have to consider what's more important to you. Also if you prefer to have no extra bags on board the one with the zipped compartments outside might be practical. Never considered it as I always take an extra bag.

After consulting with my better half, we are leaning towards the Limbo which is the poly with the reinforced alum corners. The only thing that I'm worried about is the size for US domestic carriers - the max on United and Delta appears to be: 14 x 22 x 9.

The Limbo (actually most of their cabin bags) appear to be 15.7 x 21.7 x 7.9 or 15.7 x 21.7 x 9

Have you had any experience of fitting your carryons into the airline sizers and have it fit?

I live in Europe and don't remember any experience with US carriers. I can only say that the size was never an issue on any of my flights from/in Europe.

I am obsessed with the limbo line having bought 3 of their largest checked luggage. I'm now looking for two cabin bags. What do you recommend and how much is shipping from this retailer to the US? Site is in German which I should understand a little but don't!! Sadly!

Also, got three in black...should I go for the alum or stay with limbo? I didn't like how heavy the alum were in the larger sizes. Still concerned about weight even with the cabin bags.

Thanks!

I tried ordering it to send to US and both sites would not allow it.

Oh bummer. ☹️ I guess that I'll have to wait for my next trip over there.

I'm a German native speaker:

Koffer Direkt says on their shipping site that shipping costs to the US is a flat fee of EUR 50. They will deduct the German VAT from your cart after the registration step. Well all in theory as I didn't try it out. They are offering 50% off the second piece (cheaper one) if you buy two suitcases. Only lasting today

Koffer Profi charges EUR 44.90. Same about the VAT. They are actually offering -18% off Rimowa with the code RIMOWA3 until tomorrow (July 3).

I'd hurry as Germany is some hours ahead in time. With both sellers you're responsible for all payment fees and customs duties, taxes etc. I'm not responsible for any translation or other mistakes ;D

Thank you so very much on going thru all this trouble!!! I am going to place the order and cross my fingers. Will keep you posted on how it goes!

One last question for the group: would you go for the 53 or 52 models?

Essentially, the 52 would place this bag within the airline limits with most dimensions except the width. The 53 is just a bit thicker so assuming it goes wheel in, it is just wider in the overhead bin.

I usually fly United and am statused but not on Delta which I also fly. If they flag me to put in those sizers, the 52 will fit but 53 won't even though they will both fit on the planes.

You're very welcome. I'd go with the 52 btw, it's the size I have. I know what the 53 looks like and it wouldn't only be too large sizewise, but also be even heavier. I wouldn't risk having to check the 53 unexpectedly, then again I'm mostly flying with airlines that would charge for extra checked bags.

Thank you for your insight - placing the order now!

Won't ship to USA so looking at shipping services.

Oh no, at which step do they tell you they don't ship to the US? It absolutely makes no sense...

edit: checked it myself now. You can't even select USA in the country list, but some others outside of Europe (Argentina, Mexico) can be selected... buggy eShop

I think something happened with the international shipping to USA when Rimowa was acquired by LVMH. There is a store in France that used to ship too. It might still be possible if you contact the retailers directly. Check on flyertalk, they often have the scoop.
I bought mine in France, one can say the cost savings pays for part of the trip
Of course there is the time and convenience factor, one cant easily just pick up an go to EU from USA!

You're gonna think I'm crazy but I was furiously searching the web and turns out there are services in Germany that will give you an address, receive the package and ship it for you to the USA for a fee. It ate into the savings I got but at the end of the day, it saved me $600+ for the two carryons. It's almost a wash if I had bought it in Paris and gotten the VAT back. I'll keep you posted on how it goes when they ship it to MyGermany and back to me.

For those of you who live in the EU, RUN don't walk to get this deal!!!

Thank you CrackBerryCream for all your help and encouragement!

Flyertalk was one of my sources of research - they gave me the idea for the shipping service. Thank you for the help too!

Thanks I actually did go all the way to adding to cart and payment page etc and it wouldn't let me check out based on my delivery address. Perhaps, I wasn't understanding correctly. Maybe I'll try again. Thank you.
