Actually, the emphasis in Elizabeth Arden is on the first syllable and Ardennes, the emphasis is on the second. Please correct if I am wrong...

Speaking of which, does anyone know why Hermes is pronounced "air-mess" rather than "air-may" as the French would have it?

Because Hermès is a name.

Thanks Encore Hermes; I had finally gotten a definitive on that.

Meanwhile, I am in pronounciation H*ll trying to read and silently pronounce the Italian in "Mito e Bellezza". Such a great book. Well, I am sure I have a pronouncing Italian app someplace.

Sorry about your iPad difficulties. I am such an Apple lover that I feel I have to personally apologize!

Very good thread! I know it is tedious but I wish someone would sum up all the words in one post for easy find. I tend to forget the right pronunciation after awhile. :P

I ran though all the pages but I don't remember seeing rouge garance. Is it pronounced as roog guh-rans?

BTW, I was interested in how they pronouce Hermès... "airm" LOL

Not always great, and Hermès, being a family name is weird anyway as it is pronounced air-mess. (this from the woman who grew up with the cartoon strip Yoz-mite Sam. Took me till 25 to realize it was the same word as Yosemite you-sem-e-tee.) Trust me at your own peril

I got an awesome iPhone app called google translate. You just set it for English to French and its a female voice of perfect pronunciation! It works anywhere and has made it super easy for me to get the colours right etc. I love it

Just loaded Google translate and it is fabulous. Now I shall not be embarrassed by going into my Hermes this morning and enquiring about Vert Anuss .... I shall ask about Verr Anees (a niece). Thank you !!!

So the herbag is pronounced err-bag as in when you error? Or the other err? Haha..

How do you pronounce the jige clutch? Is it jeeg? Hard h? Or jeej?

Jeej for jige! And if you say 'airbag' as in the airbag in your car with a very slight French accent or just slightly lengthening the time you would naturally spend saying 'air' you'll be just about right .
