My sweet cousin dvr'd an episode of Resale Royalty for me since it has some Hermes references in it and she knows what a fanatic I am. Anyone watch the episode where they are discussing how to pronounce Hermes? She is saying that the correct way to pronounce Hermes in French is Air-may but the 'family' chose to pronounce it Air-mez instead so both ways are actually correct. My high school French is embarrassingly rusty but I'm sure the experts here can confirm or deny this!

(I did a search & I know there are many threads here that deal with the pronunciation of Hermes...and I did not once read anyone saying that Air-may is a correct pronunciation...I hear people say it this way sometimes and it's like fingernails on a chalkboard!)

It's a proper noun, so rules for common nouns do not apply.

If Hermès were a common noun, then 's' would probably have been silent like in "après". On the contrary, in proper nouns, the "ès" combination often means that "s" will be pronounced. E.g., a girl's name Agnès is also pronounced with an "s".

This is the correct pronunciation of Hermès: http://www.larousse.fr/dictionnaires/francais/hermès/39686?q=hermes#39608

When one is browsing an HERMES Boutique or Store, is it the "the death" of a persons credibility to mispronounce the Hermes dialogue ? Just curious as I have had a few "hairy eyeball" looks after a discussion. Do the SA's expect everyone to be fluent in Hermes-alogy ??

Hi lovelies.. could someone tell me how to pronounce Rose "Tyrien" and also Blue "Orage" properly as I plan to call Hermes boutique to ask about this color availability? Thank you so much!

P.S. I searched the forum but couldn't find any thread or link on this particular question.. TIA

Hi! I pronounce it Tier-ee-en (close to Tyrion on Game of thrones!). And blue orage I pronounce or- raj. I have had some practice since I have bags in both colors so I hope I'm right!
Hope that helps!

I think we should start one, since some of the item names can be tricky! Here are some colors, bags and other things that may be hard to pronounce based on spelling. PLEASE, please continue to add to this post until we have a good guide and can walk into any Hermes and ask for what we want correctly. I think this is always a nice touch! :)

Hermes: Air-MES(z), (S sound is a combo of s and z.)

Colors:

Potiron - Poh-tee-RAW(n) (very subtle n sound as the final syllable)
Rouge Vif - Rooge Veeef
Thalassa - Ta-LAW-suh
Vert Anis - Vair aNEE
Marron Fonce - MA-rone FONsay
Ebene - E-Bain
Cyclamen - See-cla-mon(n)

Bag/Accessory names:

Picotin - Peek-oh-ta(n) - very subtle n
Haut au Courroies - Oa(t) Oh-Kuh-wah. (Courroies is said quickly, almost like KWAH) This, imo, is the trickiest of them all!
Bearn - Bairn
Jige - Jeege (soft g sound at the end)

Leather names:

Chevre - Shev"ruh" (VERY subtle ruh sound at the end)
Clemence - Cle-MAWNCE
Fjord - Feeyord (one syllable)
Vache Liagee - Vaash Liajay (Liagee is said very quickly)
love love love this post!
