I am new to sogs and have a quick question.

I was using a new bottle of TIO today and the brush got hard. It was inside the bottle (with the cap loose) while I cured the polish on my left hand and right hand. When I went to do my thumbs the brush was hardened.

Am I supposed to soak the brush (in alcohol or acetone) or do anything besides put it back in the bottle after using it on each finger?

I did not think that it would harden sitting in the bottle of TIO.

I ended up using an eyeshadow brush to finish my nails but I think I missed a step.

Thank you!

Thanks!

Weird. Were you picking up color on the TIO brush from the color layer? I usually clean my brushes with a swipe from a acetone-pad, just so I remove any traces of color that might have been picked up during the application process.

Yes, there was a tiny bit of color on the end of the brush. Would that have caused it to harden when I put it back into the bottle?

I will swipe the brush on an acetone pad next time. I wasn't sure if I could do that and put it back in the bottle?

Thanks!

For those of you with the pro LED light -- do you find that you need to cure for longer than the 45 seconds? I was trying the 9 inch heels color with my pro light and even after curing for 90 seconds (2 cycles) for BOTH the structure base coat and each color layer, I'm still finding that when I put on the top sealing/brilliance coat, there's some color being picked up on the brush.

The RCM FAQ says that I should not see color rub off: http://www.redcarpetmanicure.com/faqs-ezp-5.html

What am I doing wrong? I thought I was putting on "thin" layers but maybe it's not thin enough?? I figure after two 45-second cycles everything should have cured though, even if the layer is thicker?

It's not uncommon to see a little color transfer onto your top coat brush with darker or brighter colors. And just wipe your brush with a piece of paper towel or lint free wipe to get the color off before you put it back in the bottle.

The SOGP really only cures on the surface layer which is why they stress thin thin thin. It doesn't cure thru to the layer beneath, for example, which is why you have to cure each layer separately. Otherwise, to use your theory, you could just put on three layers and cure for 3 minutes and it would eventually get thru the thickness - but it doesn't work that way. See what I mean?

So do work to get thin color layers especially with dark/bright colors, but I wouldn't worry about the color transfer if it's slight.

No, you shouldn't have to do anything to the brush after each finger. The brush must have been exposed to light somehow and it doesn't take long. Cap the bottle and move it away from your light while you are curing. Also, don't sit in a sunny window or outside to do your nails. You might be able to salvage the brush by soaking it in acetone. You might also be able to get a replacement brush from RCM customer service.

Which one is the couture top coat?

It's just a different brand of SOGP, nothing to do with Red Carpet Manicure. See the "Other Soak-Off Gel Polish" thread if you're interested.

Thank you. I was sitting in a sunny window to that I could see better, but didn't realize it would be a problem for the few minutes I was applying the top coat.

I will just use my eyeshadow brush as it actually worked better than the brush in the bottle.

The UV light from the sun will cause the color to cure on the brush (hence, the hardening). Just wipe off the brush with some acetone before you put it back in the bottle.

Note that if you get color on the eyeshadow brush, the same thing will happen--keep it away from sunlight and/or the curing light to be safe.

I didn't realize the sun would cure the top coat so fast.

Yes, I only had my thumbs left to do with the eyeshadow brush and I cleaned it right away.

Thank you!

If you think about it, you only need to cure your fingers under the light for 30 seconds with the LED lamp. So arguably, a minute or two under the sun would be enough to cure as well!

That is an excellent point!

Do both acetone and alcohol work to clean your brush? I think I've read both of them are recommended in various threads.

While ok for a quick wipe of uncured product, if something is really gunked or hardened in your brush, alcohol won't do it. It would be like soaking off your mani in alcohol - it doesn't work. People have tried. ;)

I use 100% acetone to clean. It's what the "purify" cleanser is, essentially.

Thank you for the information!

Thanks for saving me from being one of those people that try! I'll use the acetone.

Hi sorry to add on to this thread, but I am too new to create my own discussion! been lurking for a while, and love the SOG threads it has been so helpful!

I have used red carpet manicure very dark grey, and with a gelish base and topcoat, but hate the colour!

I don't want to soak it off yet, and the colour is v dark so don't think I'll get much colour from adding a normal polish on top, so I was wondering if anybody had ever gone back to their manicure a couple of days later and added a layer? I am thinking of adding a layer of glitter either in a pale pink base or on structure gel. If I did this how would I go about it? Would I need to do anything to the SOG already there like buff shine off? Would I need to start from scratch with foundation first or go straight to colour coats?

Help much appreciated!

Thanks

Leah
