PurseBlog Article: Traveling with Your Hermès Bag

Ladies, my husband is a State Farm agent. I have specifically asked him whether my handbag would be covered and he has assured me that yes, it's covered. The loss is subject to your deductible, however. Anywhere in the world, as it is your personal property, it's covered under your homeowners policy. Although, if the bag, plus contents was 12,000.00 to replace and your deductible is 10,000.00, you would only receive 2,000.
I was offered the option to have a special deductible for my personal items. So instead of the standard 1% deductible my deductible in the case of a stolen bag is a flat $500. This saved me the last time my purse was stolen otherwise I wouldn’t get anything.

OAN I’m planning a trip to Nice for the Monaco Grand Prix next year. As I was researching hotels in Nice I found what looked like a great hotel. However, when I read the TripAdvisor reviews literally every review for the last two months said that they had handbags, money and passports stolen from their rooms and that the hotel wasn’t helpful and wouldn’t call the police. Like 20 or more recent reviews had theft. Kinda shocking.

Great article! I nearly had an anxiety attack when I saw you climbing those rocks with your Birkin on your back (!!!) but I’m definitely on Team Backpack now after seeing that!

My go-to has always been an old Hermès Fourre Tout GM to carry my good bags hidden inside but I’m going to try your tip next time! Looking forward to reading more of your work

Thank you so much! When I had left for Mohonk I had no idea that I would wind up hiking. My husbands back was bothering him so he couldn’t go with my son. I was lucky it worked out!

Fantastic article! Love everything youve been posting on Purseblog!!

thank you so much! :hugs:

Great article...
Happy skiing.

thank you! We love going there...great skiing during the day and lots of long, fancy dinners at night. my favorite store in the world is located there, too, for me the selection rivals Bergdorf, with unique things I can’t find at home in NY. This year our boys were old/good enough to ski alone so I had extra free time for that!

My B35 is my travel bag. I wear it openly at airports and have never thought to hide it. I love the bag and it’s so useful for travel and so much of its convenience is because it’s open tote easy to access my things like passport, etc when I need to. Can throw my sweater in there when I’m not wearing it. I’m not going to cover it with an ugly backpack that on top of being ugly is a pain to get into. The only time I put my bag in another bag is when it’s going through the security machine and once I’m on the plane to protect it. I use the Hermes bag cover and then put it in a large grocery type tote bag. Other than that I figure I own it and I’m flaunting it. I guess I’ve never thought of airports as more dangerous for theft as other places. And once I get to where I’m going I’m perfectly comfortable leaving it in my hotel room. I’ll use my other crossbody bags for sight seeing. I take the bag that’s appropriate for what I’m doing at the time. I really can’t understand rock climbing with a Birkin in a backpack. Just take the backpack as that’s what’s appropriate for that outing!
This is so true! Birkins were designed for air or train travel, we all heard the back story...however times have changed and most airports now have draconian security.

It was a good read until you mentioned bringing the Kelly in your backpack to the gym and then the Birkin in the backpack to go climbing. Seriously? I mean really.....seriously? You don't want to stand out yet you have a bright pink bag. If you absolutely have to bring luxury high end bags traveling with you, pick one that works with everything. Then make sure it is either locked up in the room safe or in the hotel safe itself if known as reputable with good security or locked in hard case luggage (not flimsy "hard" case but sturdy hard case). I don't want to sound mean but I'm just SMH at this. LOL. Unless I am attending a special occasion/event somewhere, I would never travel with my luxury bags. The only, and I mean ONLY exception is when I am purchasing them overseas and put them in my carry on roller bag for the flight home. Usually vintage/preloved so I don't have to worry about the box. I refuse to be a target and call attention to myself. I've used my Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Crossbody since 2013 with matching RFID wallet/clutch and it's been the absolute best personal carry pair I've ever had. They have graced Europe, Middle East, Africa, Cuba, Caribbean and South America with their presence and thankfully, never had an issue. I'd rather blend in than be worried every minute that someone is going to try and steal my luxury item.

lol. Ah, my avatar is a picture of me. I don’t think standing out is ever really off the table. Also, Hot pink works with everything. You assume that I have neutral options.

I never stated that I had a problem in the situations discussed in the article, just explained how I dealt with them (The hiking was unexpected as my husband couldn’t go due to back pain). I’m very happy with my choices and at no point was I worried. There were definitely enough evening events to ‘justify’ bringing what I chose. Clearly my article is not for you, as you have your way of dealing with travel and that’s fine, but perhaps you've never read any of the another articles on this topic, which (as I stated) this was a response to.

This trip, my K was fine in the room safe when I skied - I did mention it was a ski trip, so clearly I didn’t take the bag everywhere (and to be honest at this location I could have left the bag openly in my room without worry). throwing my wallet and a few things into a big bag is useless for me at the gym.

I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, of course, but I will be unapologetically myself and that’s ok. What’s interesting to me is that this article has gained me a much larger number of social media followers than anything I’ve previously written, so perhaps it resonated with some.

Generally, when I travel, I use a large Goyard tote that has a zip top. I put my smaller bags and items inside. I always lock the tote in my luggage and put anything expensive in the safe.

I brought nothing expensive on my trip to Vietnam as I was warned specifically about expensive handbags and scooter thieves in places like Saigon. So, I just brought a neutral colored Tumi nylon crossbody bag with lots of pockets.

I think people just need to use common sense. If you are traveling through areas with immense poverty and or high crime, dress accordingly. And be aware of your surroundings at all times. Again, common sense.

ETA: Great article as always NP!

Thank you, sweetie!

i agree there are definitely places where an expensive bag should not be brought, yours is an excellent example. This trip was definitely at the other end of that spectrum. And yes to common sense!

I will be there for the Grand Prix as well! I don’t trust hotels in France, having had things stolen out of my room numerous times. (Although there’s no hotel or country I’d feel safe leaving valuables around.) If hotels are your only option, I would recommend bringing a luggage lock and not letting anyone see you carrying nice things entering and exiting. Just my 2 cents. I’ve heard even hotel safes aren’t that safe...

Oh my ..just last night we watched “The Hustle” with Anne Hathaway about two con artists in the South of France- there was open collusion with hotel staff...and how can we forget “To catch a thief” about thieving rings also in the south of France ? but to make it H relevant- it’s also the movie where Grace Kelly was first introduced to the handbag that now bears her name ...in shock that they are not willing to contact the police - stunned actually ...:frown:

I’m in the US. State Farm won’t cover. They only cover jewelry outside the home on personal articles policy if you pay to insure individual items. Homeowners only covers items actually in the home. Spoke to them two weeks ago to confirm:sad: Which company do you use if you are in the US? Thanks!
I am in USA and have Nationwide. I have confirmed my bags are covered under my homeowners policy, though they don’t allow you to schedule them.
