Prince Harry and Meghan Markle thread

I kindly request that all members participating in the MM and Harry thread dial back the vile rhetoric.

I am not opposed to discussing public personas on TPF, including the constant torrent of news surrounding the couple from this thread. But I find it troubling when their looks are being nitpicked apart to a degree that is just not appropriate.

This thread has drawn criticism over the years, and I discussed it at great length with Megs and the mods. I am not looking to close it down, but the vitriol needs to be dialed back.

My personal feelings about hate threads aside, this ultra-negative vibe is something better suited for other forums, Reddit, or elsewhere. I am holding our community to higher standards.

Thanks for reading.

This comment nails it:

I was an entertainment journalist for a long time, and took acting classes from a famous character actor who has been in the industry for 40 years, and the mistake a lot of these thirsty ‘actresses’ make is they don’t work on their ‘craft’. They think looks, sleeping around, networking and practicing red carpet poses will get them the big jobs. At the end of the day if you don’t have talent you’re not going to get on the A list. She could have used all that energy and money to get her real dream by working on herself. But no…her ego is too big
The majority of the comments was negative. Not hate-negative but (like the comment you posted) reasonable negative. People see her for what she is.

IDK about that....maybe she just thought she look better w/o a hat
I’ve reached the point where I believe almost everything she does is calculated for effect. She knew what was expected and considered proper for the occasion. She deliberately made a choice to buck the system. She thought it would be viewed favorably because she was “a breath of fresh air.”

Exactly! I was about to say the same thing. Not only was her hair messy, it looked greasy and filthy, probably used 10X amount of product. She'd have been better off washing it and starting over. When you're going to have a huge outing with Queen, wouldn't you spend a little more time than usual getting ready? I have to wonder if she not only ditched wearing a hat, but purposely showed up in long crappy hair. That was embarrassing.
Oh god where do I start on the spaniel ears. They are so bad…

It’s the wrong kind of hair for her head so it hangs really odd. She wears a thick wavy weave but she really needs something much finer and straight or something that follows the loose curl pattern she had as a kid.

Anyway, whatever it’s tethered to can’t take the weight. Not to mention she must deep fry it or something.

I haven’t paid attention to TW’s jewelry but maybe she doesn’t have any better pieces? She has the blood diamonds that were a wedding gift but she obviously doesn’t have any pieces on loan from the BRF like the senior members do (Camilla, Kate, Anne). She doesn’t seem to have any pieces on loan from the top jewelry brands for any of her outings since Megxit Probably because She’s not a big enough celebrity, has not been invited to top tier red carpet events, and has a reputation for not giving stuff back. She didn’t inherit any major stuff from her side of the family and it doesn’t seem like H is buying expensive jewelry for her.
Didn't she wear a Juc necklace? I remember something like that and it looked awful.

She knows she will never have the jewelry her SIL will have and wear so she goes for trendy throw-away pieces she can merch. They aren't memorable nor cost what a true Royal has/wears. I remember her having little gold rings and necklaces that she wears once then that's it. Those blood diamond earrings were nice but she probably knows not to ever wear them again. Remaking them into studs or something else doesn't stand out (heck even I have diamond studs).

Ghoul was toting her baggage from the get-go. Remember her comments from her pre H days, Tig posting about not having the dreams of being a princess (like Kate is implied) but being like the animated character of “She-Ra, Princess of Power”, a “rebel” Princess?

She was determined in every way to show the RF she would do things HER way. No hat, screw protocol, messy dirty hair, her way was just one small statement early on.

What she “achieved” with her run amok narcissism: Deliciously ironic, she managed to dissolve from her perceived She-Ra Princess of Power fantasy to hard core reality as TW of the Prince of Canada in South Park, an empty trashcan sized vessel, with a new poll showing a loathing rating of -17. Or, as depicted in South Park, “his Stupid Wife”.

I was going to mention the JUC necklace. She wore it once, so maybe it was loaned to her by a friend or stylist (not loaned to her by Cartier)? If she had bought and owned it, I feel like we would have seen it a few times by now.

I feel like her jewelry collection (that we see) is really basic, nothing substantial except for the blood Diamond earrings. Nothing more than what many women with far lesser income and connections wear/own. Not that there’s nothing wrong with that, but it seems she would turn up in flashier things than she does in her effort to look successful or compete with Catherine.

Catherine has been gifted some nice pieces from QEII, William and also from her parents, and has access to the royal collection. Harry is reportedly cheap, but MM might have had access to some of the royal jewels if she had played her cards differently.

Yeah, she definitely made a huge, shortsighted mistake.

I just feel like TW would throw a bunch of money at some bling pieces just to say “hey, look! I’m super successful and can buy my own bling that I want, didn’t need to mingle with the unwashed masses to slowly earn hand-me-downs”.

True. But she wears it like it’s as iconic as Catherine’s sapphire ring. And I thought she had one already before she met Harry?

Honestly the average person wouldn’t see the watch that way but everyone knows that sapphire ring. Seems she is just struggling/competing for relevance (unsuccessfully)?
Let’s face it - the only Diana piece that could beat the ring for star power is the sapphire choker.

One thing that surprised me a little was how few of Diana’s pieces were Diana’s. I was comparing her collection to Jackie Kennedy and Bunny Mellon’s auction catalogues and … she borrowed a lot of jewelers and from the Queen. Like, a lot a lot. Obviously, I don’t have an exhaustive list, I’m going off of a lot of blogs, an interview with Simon Butler of Butler and Wilson and the Style of Diana book.

With a half dozen exceptions, I couldn’t pick most of Diana’s jewels out of a lineup - “link bracelet, chunky link bracelet, cuff bracelet, cuff bracelet with diamonds, charm bracelet, Pearl strand, graduated Pearl strand, baroque Pearl strand.”

Someone once said, around the time of Meghan’s wedding, “jewelry is the livery of the royal family, showing your position and authority.” They went on to say that the Diamond and Pearl earrings were like the journeymen’s apron - and as you take on more tasks, the “uniform” becomes more elaborate. Diana didn’t start buying for herself until she became aware that the jewelry box was closing.

The tank may be ordinary, anyone with 25k could own an identical piece. But it photographs well from a distance and since she put out a few articles about it, we know she’s associated with Diana via her jewelry.

It’s Simon Butler

Glad you see you posting again! Missed you!

This is sort of what I am thinking. She is more interested in accumulating actual money in the bank than jewelry. She figures that when she has the mega bucks, she will buy the bling she wants. Most of the pieces we have seen her wear are what I call junior or starter jewelry. Does she think that the small pieces keep her looking young because they are what a younger woman starting a career would choose? She is way past the sell by date for that.

Very interesting about Diana's jewelry. I guess when you marry the Prince of Wales there are expectations of having access to the jewelry box and later controlling it as Queen. The late Queen certainly was generous with Camilla, Catherine and Sophie. They have all worn lovely borrowed pieces.

Interestingly, KC3 has gifted his wife with quite a few outstanding pieces, such as her pearl choker that she wears on the regular. It would look like he really did not gift Diana much at all.
