Prada Bags: Now Made in China for Italian Made Prices."

FYI - Made in Italy bags are probably made by Chinese / non-Italian garment workers anyway. Surprising that they're moving to China though (labor is actually more expensive now than say, Indonesia) - maybe to save on shipping costs...

Sad when you really think about the type of workers that assemble our bags - usually underpaid immigrants...

Thank you for this insightful information. It's funny that companies like Prada want to make all the money from using cheaper labour sources, but obviously are prepared to sacrifice sales to do this. If the upwardly mobile rich young Chinese people want to buy Prada, AND they want it made in Italy, then Prada have rather largely shot themselves in the foot. The emerging market in China for luxury goods is immense and one would have thought that companies like Prada would want to be ridin' that wave bigtime.

I agree 100% .... One would think... Sadly, this is not what Prada is doing though.

I miss the OLD Prada.. I LOVE the older styles.

a few weeks ago, I went to Prada.com. and it was hideous.
there were literally MORE than 50 Saffiano Totes... I was scrolling and scrolling.
Finally, I just close that tab.. There is just nothing new and exciting there these days,
ALL the same bag, just different sizes and colors.

Seems as though..... Check this out:

That's right, ladies and gents! Prada has pulled another fast one on us. First the Pleather Fiasco, now they are selling the couture line Prada (with couture line Prada price tags) and they are being manufactured in CHINA.

This is going to make reselling Prada bags a nightmare! Can you imagine someone getting a real Prada with a "Made in China" tag so carefully hidden away. Can you say "Paypal Dispute"??

We all know the Linea Rossa line is Made in China, but it's priced accordingly. I have nothing against items made in China and own my share, but when Prada is selling "Made in Italy" bags at "Made in Italy" prices and they are being manufactured for next to nothing because of the low labor costs in China?

Sorry, folks. I'm done with Prada. This is completely unacceptable. I'm sick of this. It's deceptive as hell and I won't be supporting it any longer.
This is the end of my love affair with Prada. I flat refuse to pay Prada prices for a bag made in China. And you're absolutely right about the PayPal dispute regarding selling a bag!!!! What a disappointment and so sad. Why would Prada do this?

That's why...

Prada posted a decline in profits a few days ago, and this is their response:

http://www.refinery29.com/2015/06/89210/prada-lower-priced-handbags

Last week, Prada shared that since the end of the first quarter, it's experienced a loss of over 40% in net income. The news comes with a silver lining, if only for its fans: Prada has decided to release lower-priced handbags.

According to Bloomberg, introducing lower-priced products is one of several steps the iconic Italian fashion house is taking to combat its suffering numbers due to slow expansion in some Eastern markets. “Results for the quarter have been conditioned by the continuing difficult market conditions in the Asia Pacific area, especially in Hong Kong and Macau,” said Patrizio Bertelli, Prada S.p.A. CEO, in an official press release. Bloomberg states the brand plans to open fewer stores within the year and close some wholesale accounts, in addition to offering more-affordable bags.

While a more universally wallet-friendly luxury carry sounds amazing to anyone who’s ever shelled out several thousands for one of the label’s coveted designs — or even, close to $2,000 for its popular petite versions — don’t break out the plastic too quickly. Bloomberg cites that these new Prada bags, whose release date has not yet been specified, will run you around the €1,000 to €1,200 (or approximately $1,100 to $1,400) — keeping them well within the investment-purchase category.

I guess this means that new Prada pieces will cost around the same as Alexander Wang and Philip Lim. Finally "Made in China" with "Made in China" prices (prices are still high, but Coach charges a pretty penny for some of their Made in China bags, too).

My guess is that their strategy is to have bags at several different price points with a larger selection of entry-level-priced handbags. I'm not sure how successful this will be given that this strategy can hurt the desirability of the brand in the long run.

I worry that the brand is trying too many short-term solutions to please shareholders without considering the future of the brand. Louis Vuitton has managed to keep revenues increasing each year even after it has grown to a point where analysts warned that they will not grow anymore. They did it by up-scaling and maintaining the prestige of the brand.

I'm wondering if I should sell my Prada pieces now while I can still get decent resale value.

I was just thinking the same thing.
Though, it could go either way, Made In Italy may become collectible ?
(OK, maybe wishful thinking... :p )
OR, it might be harder to sell them all together, due to the brands tarnished reputation.

Whoever is making these hair brained decisions just seems like they are clueless to me.

I don't want CHEAPER Prada, I want Prada made in Italy, and some NEW
UPDATED Styles.
I don't think I am alone in that either.

Bring back the Nylon like it was in the late 1990's...

If they were HALF SMART, they would totally bring back MORE of the nylon.
I say this because more and more people are going Vegan... they want
designer bags that do not have leather.
Many of those people buy Louis Vuitton.. they want bags with no leather at all though.
and not bags made of Faux Leather.

Yes, I know they have some nylon, but, nothing new and exciting
in a long time.

UUUggghhh that article is just depressing... :crybaby: :shucks:

I'm wondering also if I should sell my Prada. I saved up for her and wanted her for years. This news makes me want to sell her and get another kind of handbag.

Speaking of which, I'm a regular person, and I have no idea where someone like me sells that kind of bag. Where do people sell bags? I'm so clueless!

I'm thinking that the value on the older, well made bags may go up.

Thank you! This is exactly what I am going through now. I have been a vegetarian for years, but carried leather bags. Killing an animal needlessly is killing an animal needlessly, no matter what the intended purpose. Those lamb and calf leather bags are baby animals that people think are so adorable. Their life is worth more to me than a bag or a belt. I am in the process of selling all my leather bags and going strictly nylon.

This is so tragic. When I was growing up, Prada was the first designer brand I ever truly loved. It was classic, the quality was great and the designs were like nothing else. It has been very sad to watch the brand's reputation plummet in recent years.

I don't think people want cheaper products... they want quality products, and that's what Prada has been struggling with for years now. I would be happy if Prada dramatically increased their prices, so long as they offered amazing quality like Hermes. Many other luxury brands have been increasing their prices, and continue to grow. Prada really has been the exception to the rule.

I think whoever is making these strategic decisions is out of touch with the reasons why consumers turned away from Prada in the first place....

Yep, I know a lot of Vegan's and they all have the very same complaint.

It seems that Prada has their head in the sand.. as do many designers when it comes to the Vegan Market.
The only designer who even thinks of the Vegan Market is Stella McCartney
and her bags are not really that nice in my opinion.

I look on ebay, and at all the older Prada Nylon bags, and I know that if they went
back to their roots, back to the Nylon, and market to the Upper Income Vegans... they could be a great handbag designer again.

Prada sold out, going public ruined them. Now, all they care about are the shareholders.
They are not listening to the people, and it seems they have no clue as to why
they lost so much in sales. Poor After Market Service, Poor Quality Handbags, Bags made in China... etc... etc...

WE here at tPF totally understand why they have lost sales, too bad they don't come here and read this thread... they could learn a thing or three as to what is going on, and how they could fix it. :smile1:

When I bought my first Prada, I fell in LOVE with that bag, and fact is,
after 8 years of carrying that bag it was in brand new condition. that was with a baby, and in all weather.
This is what made me fall in love with Prada, and I know that many others have the same story. It was the quality.

If Prada had announced that they were going to keep a closer eye on quality control, go back to MORE NYLON Bags.
and then went the same rout as LV, as far as After Market repairs and other service,
I bet that a lot of people who left Prada, would have given them another chance and come back.
With this announcement of a cheaper line, I personally don't have very high of hopes for their future.
That just might be the nail in their coffin.

Yep-------dilute lines are not a good thing for a luxury brand IMO. They already have Linea ------ that is bad enough.
Their after market CS is abysmal. I am not a fan of LV, but you have to hand it to them. Their product is never discounted or diluted. And their CS is second to none when it comes to repairs.
