Thanks so much for this!

Gulliver, how interesting! Just reading up on its characteristics…

I’ve also added some further pics of interesting details:
One of the side panel looks so much like clemence?? It’s by far more textured like this -

And the bottom panel

Some of the details shown in these pictures seem very different to those in previous pictures. If you have the bag with you, would you mind taking a picture of the lining of the bag? That should help clear things up! ;)

Yes of course! Here they are.
Another Japanese reseller suggested it’s ‘vaugrene’ leather.

ヴォーグレネ

I cannot find any information on this in English French naming convention that matches up!

The stamping which is super hard to see but, it says C square (1999)

Thank you this is all super fascinating!

Thank you so much for the extra pictures, very fascinating indeed! Based on this batch of pictures, it does seem that the leather is, in fact, Clemence. This is an extremely atypical Clemence grain, but the lining and other facets of the bag suggest that this must be Clemence leather. I do apologise for any confusion.:flowers:

Omg! Thank you!
Totally extremely atypical right!?
I’ve been spirialling since getting the bag because of it haha.
I can’t believe CLEMENCE could look like this!? I even took it into Hermes Ginza leather specialists for review, and one specialist in passing said ‘CLEMENCE’ while the other specialist serving me said no it’s not CLEMENCE and ultimately did not know the answer and gave up.
The seller is an AACD certified shop so I would hope they would know to list their leather accurately?

This is a super rare small fine grained example of CLEMENCE leather bag for future reference!

For those that are interested, look how fine this CLEMENCE grain is compared to my Togo 2023 men’s Kelly.

I feel the Clemence leather description found on the internet needs to be updated for accuracy? It normally says that CLEMENCE leather is bigger grained than togo, which it can be. But not with my example from 1999.

Thank you! I couldn’t find any English speaking websites description of this ‘Veau graine’ leather though!
I think it’s another name for Ardennes, unless they actually mean the “graine” leather which I don’t think this can be because that one didn’t come in anything other than “natural” color and white I think?

Edit: not that what is labeled is always what the leather is though! I just think that’s probably they meant

I think the seller was just using “Veau Grainé” as a general term (translates literally to “grained leather”), though there is an Hermès leather called Veau Grainé.

I think I have a picture on my computer of a Clemence bag with similar grain; I’m not at home right now, but I’ll share that as soon as I get home. :flowers:

So much to learn about Hermes leathers! Veau Graine… I’ve seen one bag with this name here:

Kinda looks like my leather with the smaller grains, but the bottom panel is totally different.

Oh wow, looking forward to seeing something similar, thank you!

I’m adding some pics comparing the 1999 small grained Clemence leather with a 2023 Togo leather bag in Etoupe.

Super fine and small grains on the front and back panel, compared to Togo.

Only the bottom panel of this Clemence bag appears bigger in grain size compared to Togo.

Side panel is starting to look more like common Clemence leather

I think the internet needs to update this data below.

Definitely Clemence I have seen this grain appearance before on older bags. I do not think the clochette is a replacement, just made from a different piece of hide. It is common that different panels or parts of the bag can come from hides with a different appearance. This bag is an example. Hermes is thrifty, they use up all the leather.

Thank you so much bababebi! I'm learning so much about Hermes leathers. Glad to own this Clemence bag with the tiniest fine grains. Surprised that the leather specialists at Hermes Ginza did not know about this! I believe they were confused by the front and back panels being so fine-grained.

Happy to share more pics of the bag, if anyone would like to add it to their archives/historical reference.

I’m also going to have the bag sent to the Hermes Spa. Can’t wait to see how it’ll look cleaned up!
