I am adding a picture of patent navy with a slouchy black knit top as a point of reference:

(Taken with a blackberry-sorry for the poor quality)

I think you may match or have contrast with same shade of colors.

For instance: dark blue would go good with light blue, but for different shades of blue mix that will look odd to me.
it is the same with black and blue, in my opinion.

I think that fashion "do's" and don'ts" exist, but usually they are a matter of severity. For example, if you were wearing super low-rise jeans with your thong underwear intentionally hanging out the back, then you have just committed a rather obvious fashion don't. So many things pass as fashion do's these days that I really don't consider things like "is it okay to wear a navy bag with black clothing?" a valid concern. I would consider it a petty complaint from a very shallow person if you were out and someone actually cut you down for wearing a navy bag with black clothes....

IMHO life is too short to worry about this antiquated fashion rule. So my answer is YES. I wear navy bags with all black outfits once in a while, and I think it looks fine and fashionable.

I personally am leaning toward the idea that if you are wearing all black (including shoes), to throw a navy bag in the mix may look like you didn't have a black bag so you used your navy one.

exactly why you would need to make sure it looks intentional to pull it off successfully.. throw in some other blue or navy accessories
