How did you put the chain on? Can you show pics of other side and show what it's attached to?

I put a small clasp upside down from the inner side through the small opening between zipper and canvas at the end of the zipper- so that there the small ring of the clasp comes through the opening. In this ring I snapped the chain. I can take a photo later.

I found an easier method: Take one of these Caps normally used for making necklaces and fastening the ends https://goo.gl/images/KbcHvf . You need the right part with the short Chain. Put the end of the chain from Inside under the Opening between zipper and canvas (closed zipper end) and then you can Clip your Chain clasp on the chain Part.
