I've been intrigued by Strangelove for quite some time, so it could well have been me. I'm getting getting forgetful!

You are right, oud might not be my thing. I don't particularly enjoy MFK-Oud Extrait.
If you can't handle the MFK ouds, then you should probably steer clear. MFK fragrances are very heavily synthetic, including his ouds, which are much, much, much more palatable to most people than real oud. I would be very surprised if someone who didn't like the MFK ouds wasn't repulsed by real oud.

Honestly, I don't even think the MFK ouds smell like real oud. Most designer and niche fragrances that have "oud" in them don't smell anything like real oud.

Any favorites?

I bought Golconda, as I have Jarling and Jardenia. I tested Shadow as well, but I like floral more. Also they gave me a chance to dap Roses, as it was their last 10 ml for own use.

Jovoy is a next door boutique. I dropped in it too:biggrin:

Fortunately, I had a list what I was interested in. Roberto Greco Oeilleres and Porter Sa Peau. The second one is aldehydes and modern back to my green years. Charming. Oeilleres reminds me Tyrannosaurus Rex by Zoologist in its opening.

Christian Provenzano perfume. That guy makes nice fragrances for Clive Christian and Boadicea Victorious, his own scents are beautiful as well, I find them less special and less long lasting.

Haven’t been on here in a while but wanted to chime in that I just ordered the Strangelove discovery set. FYI there’s a 10% off code at Luckyscent - WAYNE10. I’m not much of an oud head but they sound interesting. I’m most looking forward to trying Silence the Sea cos I’m a sucker for ambergris.

Anyone else also into ambergris? What are your favourites? Mine are:
  • Les Indémodables Escale En Indonésie - I wore this almost everyday this past Australian summer. It has a brief, rind-like citrus opening. Then it’s a delightful airy ambergris which is the smell of skin after swimming in the ocean.
  • Papillon Spell 125 - Starts dark witchy forest then turns into ancient, hidden temple in said forest. In the heart there’s a strong ambergris which smells like warm skin.
  • Clandestine Laboratories Silver - a blind buy I just got yesterday. It’s a bit weird, hard to describe and I dig it. Starts a bit minty and camphorous over a smooth, non-aquatic ambergris. Then it’s floral ambergris. Ends slightly smoky (I assume from the fossilised amber). Also am going through 13 samples from this indie house and super impressed so far!
Also have samples of the new PRIN animalics on the way (FOMO is real and I keep telling myself to wait for my samples and not blind buy). Oqachol in particular sounds like my kinda jam (ambergris + musk ).

Sounds like an enjoyable perfume shopping experience. I've been going through a phase where I am enjoying aldehydes again. Piguet's Baghari, Madame Rochas parfum and of course Chanel No. 22 to name a few. Enjoy your new beauties!

Enjoyed reading your description of your favorite ambergris perfumes. I can't really say I have actively explored ambergris-centric fragrances, but I have a few Creed fragrances in which I can detect the ambergris -- Fleurs de Bulgarie and Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie. Also Encens Mythique d'Orient has a distinct ambergris note but sadly Guerlain has discontinued it (although I think they have released a newer version which I haven't tried, which also contains ambergris).

I’m not very familiar with Creed so will have to go try those! And I’ve always wanted to try Encens Mythique d’Orient! It’s not available where I live so will have to see about getting a sample one day.

My anosmia is coming and going, so I can't contribute here as much as I'd like to.
However, there are a few perfumes I've sampled before this current bout of anosmia, so I'm going to comment on them before I forget the details.

Sampled:
Zara (X Jo Malone I believe)- Captivatingly Paris. For such a cheap perfume, it's really nice. I was pleasantly surprised.

MontBlanc Femme Individuelle- Can you say pepper?
I'm very grateful for this perfume because it's the first time since covid that I could identify actual spices. I got pepper, cardamon and bay leaves in this. It develops into something creamy after a couple of hours, but that pepper hit is strong right until the very last moment. Not for me as I felt like I had been slaving away in a hot kitchen and picked up those aromas.

Kilian Moonlight in Heaven- SO lovely. It's the only Kilian I've loved so far. Apple brandy on the rocks was interesting but not a "love". This one, I can actually picture wearing. A little coconut, a little creamy, very smooth. I only got the tiniest spray on my wrist as the SA was being really stingy :P but I loved what I smelled.

Le Labo Santal 33- An immediate NO. Just awful on my skin.

Bought:
Goutal Eau D'Hadrien- It is divine! My absolute favourite right now. It was a blind buy because I was gifted a coupon and this was one of the few perfumes I could use it on. It's the nicest perfume. It smells like an expensively formulated scent, if that makes sense.
My mum has stolen my bottle as it smelled so good on her. It's the first fragrance she's been excited about since the original Chloe lol.
I've since found out that there are several variations of it (I think we have the men's or unisex version), so I'm excited to sample the others at some point.

Prada La Femme (regular and intense)- I got these with my gifted coupon too. They were tester bottles, with about 40ml left in each. Good blind buys because they were so cheap but there's enough in the bottles to really enjoy them for a long time.
They are lovely, soapy, clean smelling. I can't differentiate between them, but I did test them just before I lost my sense of smell entirely so that may be the reason why they were indistinguishable from each other.
Either way, I felt like I'd just stepped out of a shower with these. Very soapy/shower gel/clean is the only way I can describe them. Perfect for summer.

Coach The Fragrance- Am I the only person who didn't have any idea that Coach makes fragrances?!
This one has "me" written all over it. It's such a gentle scent; it doesn't project. It smells like a soft creamy body lotion on me. It was the thing that made me realize that I prefer scents that don't project too strongly (which, I believe, is unusual).
I also tested Coach Floral and Coach Dreams, but opted to buy the original because it just felt easy (yet lush) on me.

I'm waiting on samples of Kilian L'Heure Verte (thanks for the recommendation @JenJBS), Indult Tihota and Heeley Sel Marin. I'm hoping that last one reminds me of the beach. I'm desperate for a proper beach scent!

All in all, I'm having a great deal of fun playing with perfumes. I'm not buying anything more now. I'm going to keep training my nose until this anosmia is totally cured, but using more everyday stuff like flowers, soaps, etc.
I'm trying to remind myself not to get carried away because it's easy to end up with an overwhelming collection. I'm happy with the 4 I've bought, though (counting the one I'll now have to borrow back from mum when I'm wanting it).

Also, possibly the best bit of testing these is that none of them gave me an allergic reaction. A massive bonus!

Has anyone here tried any of these fragrances? What are your thoughts on them?

Edits: a bunch of repeats/typos. Shouldn't post before coffee lol.

I had been debating about buying a bottle of Encens Mythique d'Orient, but I debated too long, and in the meantime, it got discontinued and became unavailable! Perhaps I should track down a sample of the new version and check it out.
Yesterday, I wore Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie, and it's beautiful -- definitely a powerhouse. Despite its name, it's not very floral. A warm, rich fragrance, the sandalwood in it is very good quality and the vanilla is not overdone. The ambergris lends a very interesting nuance to the fragrance -- definitely present, but humming along rather than taking center stage.
Just thought I would share my thoughts. Good luck with your sampling!

@jblended, I enjoyed reading your update, and am glad to hear that you were able to smell/discern some of the spices in the perfume. Pepper is not my most favorite note either, but I do enjoy a well-executed spicy perfume that does not remind me too much of slaving in a hot kitchen!

I recall sampling Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien a while back in the older bottle design, and remember it as being a fresh, citrusy scent, very nice for summer. I have a few fragrances by Annick Goutal, but they're the older ribbed bottles with the gold cap and ribbons at the neck. I've liked almost all the fragrances I've tried by Annick Goutal. Glad to hear you and your mom are enjoying your new fragrance.

Thank you.
There are days when I get frustrated, especially when I make progress then it all suddenly vanishes, but it's all worth it in the end.
I have had the pleasure of smelling orange and spices for the first time all over again. It's bizarre to have that experience as an adult. Very difficult to explain just how weird it is to pick up the scent of an orange after not being able to. It's refreshing and intoxicating, and I wonder how I took it for granted all my life!

Thank you. Mum's pretty easy to please. This small thing will have her brimming with excitement for years, lol!

Yes, you're right. It's mostly fresh/grapefruit/citrus we're smelling in this. Though, there is something more complex in there so that it's not a straight citrus fragrance but, I can't tell you what that is.
It's certainly very nice for this time of year!

I definitely think we have the new one (pic from the net).

I have seen pictures of the old bottles you're describing and they're very pretty with the ribbon.
