I have one bracelet that is actually by Chamilia. I started out with a Pandora bead clasp bracelet but could not get that bead open without resorting to my nail scissors.
I am thinking of putting a Trollbead clasp on my bracelet, because they are so decorative. Also I am going to add a couple of the Trollbeads that fit a Chamilia. Most of my other beads are by Pandora.
Biagi makes lovely beads, too, at a much lower price. Their quality is very good.
I think my next bracelet will be all Trollbeads.

This is my bracelet - just waiting for 1 more blue flower glass bead & it will be complete!
I love it! I figure to change the look I'll just get different color glass beads. I have the smaller safety chain.

Hi,

I've found this forum while doing research on Google regarding Glass beads for the pandoras, troll, etc. bracelets.

The reason of my research is that I would like to eventually start offering interchangeable jewelry for my customers (I'm in Québec, Canada), and maybe to offer them (the beads) on auction or etsy store. And of course, since I'm a lampworker, I would like to make the glass beads myself! at least the more unique ones!

But I have many questions in my head before being able to start the process and wonder if actual wearers of pandoras and other brands would accept to give me their input. That would be very helpful for me, especially that lining requires to decide over a mechanical press or buying already made rivets. If it's too much questions, please feel free to answer just one of few if you wish.

1) Do you have interest in independent artists beads or find most of the manufactured brand beads suit your needs in term of uniqueness?

2) Do you prefer glass beads with lined sterling silver or that doesn't matter?

3) a) Regarding silver lined beads, do you mind if they are rivets glued with epoxy on each side of the bead ? or do you prefer beads that are mechanically lined (silver cored pressed), or that doesn't matter?

b) Do you think sellers should mentioned the type of lining they have done (glued or pressed) - and in your opinion, are those 2 method equals in term of value of the bead ?

4) Would other metal colors (like copper for lining or caps to beads) be something you would consider in your jewelry or if only sterling and gold a must?

5) Do you like different shapes of bead than the standard thin "donut" bead?

6) Is it important to you that your glass beads be same size or various size is not a problem?

and finally last question!

7) Do you bid on Ebay for artist beads or prefer Etsy with fixed price ?

I hope it's ok to ask my questions here, if not please let me know I don't want to break any rules !

Hoping to read you & thanks for your help !

Julie

Here is one of my designs.... The glass beads are mostly from SRA artists from around the globe. There is one Trollbead - Julian. There are several silver TBs and a couple silver/gold and gold spacers from Pandora. Those pieces really make the bracelet sparkle!

Let me know what you think!

Your bracelet is absolutley gorgeous. I have just started a new bracelet.I have been on a couple of websites for handmade glass beads but they go as soon as they appear and I keep missing out. Would you be able to tell me of a couple of sites where you got yours, they are so pretty. You can PM me if you like. Thanks

I will be happy to give you my opinion on these questions. I love the fact that you are asking. I have a rather huge collection of beads (150+) and most of the glass beads are SRA as I prefer the artistry and unique design that is not offered by manufactured beads. So I have seen beads from Australia, The Netherlands, Italy and the US.

1) Do you have interest in independent artists beads or find most of the manufactured brand beads suit your needs in term of uniqueness?

Manufactured beads are fine, but they are very small (especially Chamilia) and limited colors and design. Pandora has a tiny offering and I find them boring and unimaginative. So my love is SRA beads where the hunt is as much fun as wearing them.

I would strongly urge you to NOT use rivets. The best bead artists use silver lining that not only appear nicer, but do not fall off the bead. I've already had one rivet loosen and fall off a bead. What is also important is that the silver is not overwhelming on the bead. I have a beadist in VA that uses silver lined and the workmanship is awesome. Even Pandora has a huge silver core on the outside of the bead that is way too big with that big PANDORA printing. Less is more and silver-lined the absolute best.

I also have seen artists start lining their beads because users prefer lined to unlined. I still buy unlined, but all the artists that aren't lining them admit they are looking to lining them because users prefer it (looks better with the manufactured beads).

b) Do you think sellers should mentioned the type of lining they have done (glued or pressed) - and in your opinion, are those 2 method equals in term of value of the bead ?

If a beadist uses pressed silver lining, they advertise it proudly because it is considered the best way. And, no they are no equal at all.

4) Would other metal colors (like copper for lining or caps to beads) be something you would consider in your jewelry or if only sterling and gold a must?

I would urge you to stick with silver for cost. Copper has inherent tarnishing that is worse than silver. You won't be able to afford gold. No SRA bead artist that I've seen uses gold. The price of gold makes this impossible.

5) Do you like different shapes of bead than the standard thin "donut" bead?

6) Is it important to you that your glass beads be same size or various size is not a problem?

I think that bead size needs to be stated so the buyer can judge whether a bead fits the look of their bracelet. Often, a beadist will group 2 similar beads together so a buyer can get two of same look and size. Some beadists state it's "necklace" or "bracelet" size to help. I think that as long as you state the size, you'll be fine.

and finally last question!

7) Do you bid on Ebay for artist beads or prefer Etsy with fixed price ?

I buy both places. I really do like Etsy for the instant gratification. I would urge you to not stretch out your bead auctions for a week. Three to five days is enough. Many beadists using Ebay list a mix of buy-it-nows with auctions so buyers can grab one right away if they want. I would try both venues to see which type works best for you. Look at what other lampwork artists are doing on both that works well for them.

I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask more questions. I have definitely seen what works and what doesnt and definitely what makes me want to buy a bead!

I sent you a PM!
Thank you:tup: I a very new to this but I know I definitely prefer the silver lined beads. I agree the Pandora are not very inspiring although that is what I started with. I have some nice Trollbeads and have ordered some beads from ASOB but keep missing out as they are snapped up as soon as they appear. I have printed off the names you sent me and am now going to enjoy working my way through.:yahoo:

Here is another of my combinations. This one is red/black/gold mostly and has a couple TB glass beads and one Pandora (gift), but mostly handmade ones from all over the world. All of the silver beads are TB and the gold and silver/gold ones are Pandora. You can see the glass beads are different sizes and it still looks fine. All of them have silver lining. It makes for a more uniform look.

That one is lovely as well. The silver lined beads are definitely nicer. ASOB is a String Of Beads she makes gorgeous beads but is in the UK.

I found her website... Her beads are stunning. However, I noticed the holes are 4mm making them incompatible with Pandora bracelets. That is not a big deal for me, as I use the Trollbead bracelet for the very fact that not all beadists make the hole big enough for Pandora.

I don't see anywhere where she posts dollar equivalents. She must not do much international business. Is she on eBay or Etsy?

SoonerOrLater, thanks so much for your input …

I had serious doubts about rivets, but wanted to verify with experienced collectors (150 beads is quite a collection!). I have read discussions of lampworkers using rivets but didn’t consider this was a high quality practice of artistic work. So your input confirms to me it’s better to wait to raise the money for the mechanical press than to use rivets in the meantime.

I agree that metal should not distract from the design of the bead, I saw the Pandora printing you mentioned and find it very ugly but didn’t want to say so to not upset people who like them. I mean the companies do great job with gorgeous metal beads, but glass bead are not very attractive to my eye (some exceptions)

I’ll take note of your suggestion of not putting auction for more than 3 to 5 days and to combine with “buy it now” if I choose the Ebay path. I sure would like to open a Etsy store. I find it easier to browse the past work of artist and I like the ambiance there … Like you said trying many is the way to go !

I know copper tarnish faster than silver, but I have ideas of antique copper caps combined with silver lining, that may be a thing to experiment … If I'm able to find it at good price, I may use Argentium sterling silver tube, that is a kind of silver with same sterling content but with less copper content (it’s replaced with a rare metal called germanium), so it has high tarnish resistance.

So a lot of research + patience + practice in perspective !

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this,

Best regards,
Julie

Anyone here from Europe? We'll be in Amsterdam, Scotland, Ireland and Paris this June and would love to start our teen daughters on a bracelet. Thought a Pandora or Troll would be a great one to start and fill with memories of our trip.

I know they are made in Denmark so you'd think we'd be able to find them where we're going.

I am soooo glad I found this thread! I had never heard of Pandora and I really like charms. I had tried Juicy Charms but found them to be too big for my wrist and I prefer sterling or 14k gold. I also like that Pandora is not made in China, instead handmade by artisans...
I got one yesterday.:yahoo: Just three charms- queen bee, sterling handbag and a murano turquoise color bead.
I think it's a great start and since my bday is coming up in April, it will be easy for people to get me something cute...like MORE charms! LOL!
I read through this whole thread and really enjoyed seeing everyone's bracelets:heart:
