I maybe in a minority here. But if speedy bags, neverfulls and almas canvas bags were made readily available and the price point was getting closer or similar to mid luxury brands I don't know maybe say MK etc... rather than high end brands then this would put risk on the percieved luxury status of the brand.

So in away from a business perspective. It makes sense if they make the core canvas bags iconic/classic pieces more scarce, these pieces have exceptional pedigree, provenance, historic's and craftmanship, etc.. everything that the brand built it's luxury reputation from. By making these items more scarce or harder to buy or a bit more limited. Its part of them taking back control. All part of premiumisation. Making the product more "special" or "exclusive". If the iconic pieces started losing this percieved specialness because of over saturation especailly from this digital era of You tube and instagram etc.. The brandpower name would suffer long term. I think luxury brands are having to rethink or repostioning themselves to define what luxury is in the this new digital era.

So if they are just making it harder to get the iconic monogram canvas bags by producing and supplying less. It does to some extent create more desirability and demand. You only have to look at the pochette metis. The more they make it less accessible to buy by not over producing the more people want it. It feels special to own it. Limited editions, limited supply and those collabs with other hot designers are just part of luxury premiumisation. Making pieces less accessible is just part of that.
Sorry for my long brain fart...

The problem is right now there is way too much speculation trying to figure out what is going on. Because as human beings we feel there has to be a reason for everything and people want answers. When in fact no one really fully understands or knows exactly what is going on with LVMH not even most SA’s or Managers no matter how reliable WE think the information the feed us is. No matter how many years we have been purchasing or how much or because someone use to work for LV. Because in reality they are told what they are told and it is never the complete picture. Just like in any business things happen up at the top that only the owners/executives who run the business really know and believe me those conversations are not shared with anyone below them - truthfully any way. So really it just boils down to a wait and see type game right now. For people who are new to LV and have no SA who is willing to work for them it may be a tad frustrating right now for them. It’s a game that NOONE has cards to. . . nor are any of us sitting at the game table.

The one thing EVERYONE knows for sure is that Canvas bags are not readily available at this time.

People who buy a lot of bags want options beyond the classics. Many clients want more sophisticated bags: leather, exotics, seasonal, runway, and limited collections, pieces created as part of special collaborations, etc...

While I sure do love more options, I wish there were some options for classics. But this day of age, your post is very spot on.

I think it good for LV to branch out of classic or they will become tiring of producing same stuff over and over. But if I want some classic I would I have to wait and see. :p

Could it be that nothing is really going on other than demand temporarily outstripping supply? Maybe the (perhaps completely unfounded) rumours of LV getting out of the canvas game is causing people to buy a bit earlier than they might have planned to.

It’s holiday shopping time! Demand will be high, popular, entry level items will be harder to find...and after the holidays, it will be much easier. Patience.

It didn't take long for me to get the item I was hoping for - about a week. It seems like a lot of items are popping up on the website, even if they're in low quantities.

Am I the only one who think it's funny that a couple of years ago people were complaining that LV is saturating the market with too many flashy monogram bags and that they are everywhere, and they should be "more prestigious" like Hermès and Chanel that offer "REAL LEATHER" instead of cheap canvas. Now that LV are making more leather options and the monogram are cool again, everyone is buying up the cheap one and then complain that "OMG I want my entry level monogram bag, why are they out of stock?" and "I'll not be forced to buy expensive leather bags"

Bingo! Spot on

I agree with you! When I look at the bags that have been released recently, I am not too fond of many of them. Let's hope that LV will stick to the canvas products we love!

I don’t think LV will completely phase out Canvas. It will just make them hard to get.

If LV is going towards a similar route as Hermes and Chanel and is trying to target more higher end consumers; it has to make its entry level products more expensive. Unfortunately, Canvas bags are LV entry level and Canvas can be expensive only to a certain extent. By the end of the day, it’s still...just canvas.

So the way to get around this is to make full leather bags, which is certainly more expensive, more available. And only those who have good history of purchasing the leather bags can gain easy access to the Canvas. The rest of the people would just have to be on the Canvas wait list for a long time to get a hold of one.

Therefore, even though Canvas retail at lower price points, people would still be thrilled about getting one because it signals the person must have been a loyal customer of LV. Average customers would have to choose among the full leather lines which is at way higher price points. As a result, LV’s customer portfolios are “enhanced”.

Just my conspiracy theory of course. I could be totally wrong.

Last Saturday I called the 866 number to verify the petit noe I wanted was still at the Rodeo Dr. store...nope! None around Los Angeles where I was visiting. My mom and I went to 4 different LV stores in South Coast Plaza looking of the noe or the speedy b30 DE...nope...so long story short, I was wearing my speedy 25 DE and started looking at straps. Wound up getting the reverse XL strap for my speedyB. Its really cute with it. SA told me they would be getting shipments in soon since it's the holiday season...but who knows. I agree, it should be a fun experience to shop for you luxury item, and they should definitely have it in stock. There was only one reverse strap at the Saks store. None at the other three! So I guess I scored there! Good luck with your hunts for your special bags.

I am not buying LV is trying to make canvas goods harder to obtain. I truely believe were living in a shortage of canvas goods because of great demand for them. It happen before and it happening again.

If LV were to intentially make them more scarce, there would be no need of LV to spend money on opening new factory in the US or even bother expanding existing factory out in Europe.
