I've posted some photos of these items on this thread before, but here is a good (I think) reference point.I’m debating whether I should add an ostrich bag to my wishlist, I love the look and feel of it but am wondering about the patina and wearability. Any Insights would be welcome!
The patina is stunningI've posted some of these photos on this thread before, but here is a good (I think) reference point.
The orange agendaI've had for at least 10 years. I carry, and handle this, daily. It rides around in my work bag, I've spilled stuff on it (one mark slightly visible), and it's developed a lovely glossy patina. To me, this is the epitome of well-loved ostrich. I've gotten so many complements on it, even all worn in, that someone asked me to try to find her one (I failed, they are no longer made in ostrich).
The Cognac B35 is probably 12 years old. Carried a bit by my mom, who "gave" it to me a few years ago as she didn't see herself carrying it anymore. The Parchemin B30 I got in 2015....I don't carry it often as I'm scared of handle darkening, but I'm committed to changing that. You can see how the Cognac ostrich handles are slightly darker and glossier...that is ultimately how the rest of the bag will look with more use...so maybe I need to rub the main panels more.
Ostrich is a REALLY durable skin, it just takes some getting used to letting it get worn.View attachment 5349987

Wow stunning absolutely stunning! I love the patina actually and would not be opposed to the bag aging into that color. Thank you so much for your in depth response and photosI've posted some of these photos on this thread before, but here is a good (I think) reference point.

I hope you find what you are looking for. In all the leathers/exotics I've had, ostrich is one of the most durable in my opinion, IF you can handle the change in appearance as it ages.Wow stunning absolutely stunning! I think so, I just need to find a color that I would feel most comfortable with as it ages. I originally wanted rose tyrien or terre cuite but I think it would be better to have a color less pastelI hope you find what you are looking for. Thank you! I always store in the dust bag away from sunlight so that should not be an issue. I really wanted a bright or pastel color ostrich but it seems perhaps the patina on those may not be as pleasant as a colorway that is richer in colorI prefer darker skins, but the quills are less noticeable (fine by me).
As @Christofle said, ostrich can fade in sunlight (as can many leathers) fading can affect dark(er) colours just as much as any, it could be even more noticeable with darker colours. If you normally store bags out of direct sunlight and in dust-bags, there should be no problems.
Also, when you buy new, don't worry if the skin appears quite matte. The shine comes with age (on all colours equally) and continued use.
theres no issues with ostrich traveling. no CITES needed either. its easier to travel with customs wise in comparison to croc or lizardHi, anyone had troubles with customs while traveling with ostrich bag?
I don’t have an H ostrich, although I Will one day, but I DO own ostrich(Laurus, have owned ostrich bags and shoes before, it ages beautifully and is really hardwearing-although I carry crocodile on a daily basis my ostrich bag is currently my favourite bag-id highly recommend it..I never wanted an ostrich to begin with, but I got offered Gris T which is my all time favorite color in ostrich so I took it.
Ostrich is so much prettier in person than any picture could do justice and now I'm obsessed. I'd love a pochette or mini kelly or danse in ostrich...
