Hello, Ostrich People... Do you know if they are still making ostrich in size 35 in B or K? I was looking at the SO/HSS A La Carte and the biggest size they go is a 28 in a Kelly and a 30 in a Birkin. I like larger bags, (guy here) and the smallest I'd like would be a 35. I have seen them on the pre-loved market but wanted to ask my SA about sizes. But wanted to ask the "Pros" here first. Thanks for your help in advance. Not big into colors, but a nice neutral would be great. Black, Graphite, Gris Meyer, etc. :)

Someone more knowing please correct me but I do not think b 35 ostrich is altogether discontinued. I guess there are not that many large enough hides available. Maybe they still pop up randomly to stores, not sure if it is a push offer though…

Yes, I think that in the sizes they offer on the SO pages are probably one hide. And if you go into the larger bags, it may take more than one, hence with a lot higher price tag. (Just my guess). I have seen them in 40 and HAC. So they did exist, LOL. I'll trying calling my SA this week and report back here.

Venturing into my first ostrich, would you guys recommend lighter or darker shades of the skin in terms of aging in the long run? Tossing up between gris perle/beton, or gris t/graphite.
The handles can darken on a light bag while the body of the bag can discolour / get lighter on a darker bag.

Both patina in their own beautiful way! I think you should pick whichever colour you are drawn to most today.

Maybe look at some vintage / older bags in similar colour ways to see which you prefer patina wise.

I absolutely LOVE Ostrich. In general, darker colours will age better in that they won't darken with use the way that lighter colours will, although I do think that Ostrich is a lot more hardy than it receives credit for. That said, with respect to an SO specifically, if you are considering two tone, know that you can do the darker colour on the handles/sides and leverage the best of both worlds.

I have two Beton Ostrich bags now and I am careful with these - much more careful with my B25 which obviously has Beton handles, and then less careful with my recent SO that has Gris Asphalte handles. This said, lighter Ostrich colours in general are stunning! My Noir Ostrich seems just totally fine - nothing to report. I had an Ostrich C18 in Rose Tyrien and had zero issues with wear/aging. Finally, my Blue De Malte definitely shows darkening on the handles with use, but the body has held up and shows basically no signs of aging.

When I think about Ostrich, I think about the handles (on applicable bags obviously) which is the only place I will typically be touching with my hands.

I don’t know about aging….but I think gris perle/beton is spectacular in real life

These are really great advice, I am very appreciative guys thank you!

That's really interesting info I didn't know that the handle and body will darken/discolor depending on the colour of the bag. I've found lots of pictures of vintage ostrich bags in darker or brighter colours but not so much in lighter colours in order to see how they patina.

I am doing a SO how did you know haha! It will definitely be 2 tone, I'm tossing up between
- MK Gris perle/Beton (body) & graphite/Noir/GT (handle)
- MK Graphite (body) & blue iris (handle)

I agree lighter colours especially GP and Beton looks amazing but I'm worried that the pores will darken too much over time and become really "pimply". Then again, I'm also worried that darker colours will discolor overtime.

I'd probably do a lighter-colored body, with darker handles.

Remember: in case of lightening/discoloration, it's always easier to apply some type of conditioner/darkening agent (to get it back closer to the original color), than to try to lighten up leather that's already darkened.

Depending on your preference on - twilly that could be an option. I have ostrich in parchemin, noir and jaune citron. I never think twice about my noir. Parchemin I usually wrap twillies to keep the handles from darkening. You should make a SO that makes you happy as well as comfortable.

Which bag would you consider more elegant for evening occasions:

- KP in Ostrich
- MK in Epsom with a touch of Lizard

KP in Ostrich would be my vote. It’s classic, elegant and feels like it’s made more for evening occasions than an MK. And it holds more. For me an MK feels like a super small purse that is nice for special occasions / dinner evenings but not so fitting to an elegant occasion (but that’s my unpopular opinion)
