Oprah has previously made false accusations of racism which conveniently coincide with the release of racist movies.

She did it in 2005 with the Hermes store before the release of the movie Crash. She showed up 15 minutes after the store was closed and said they wouldn't let her in because Hermes has a problem with North Africans. Read the entire story below.

Luxury store apologizes to Oprah
Hermes' Paris store had rebuffed talk show host

Wednesday, June 22, 2005 Posted: 2348 GMT (0748 HKT)

A spokeswoman says Oprah Winfrey will discuss the incident on air when her show resumes production.

(CNN) -- Luxury store Hermes on Wednesday apologized to Oprah Winfrey for turning her away last week, saying that its Paris store was closed to set up for a public relations event when the talk show host stopped by.

"Hermes regrets not having been able to accommodate Ms. Winfrey and her team and to provide her with the service and care that Hermes strives to provide to each and every one of its customers worldwide," the store said in a statement.

"Hermes apologizes for any offense taken due to such circumstances."

The store said the incident occurred on June 14 around 6:45 p.m., about 15 minutes after the store closed. It said Winfrey and her team arrived at a time when "a private PR event was being set up inside."

Harpo Productions spokeswoman Michelle McIntyre said Winfrey "will discuss her 'crash moment' when her show returns from hiatus in September."

"Crash" is a film dealing with race relations. The phrase "crash moment" refers to situations where a party feels discriminated against on the basis of skin color.

The New York Daily News cited sources close to Winfrey as saying the talk show host was first rebuffed by a clerk and then a store manager. The Daily News reported Winfrey had gone to the store to buy a watch for singer Tina Turner, her dining partner that night.

McIntyre confirmed that account for CNN.

The New York Post, in its Monday Page Six gossip column, reported she was turned away because the store had been "having a problem with North Africans lately."

In comments to CNN, an Hermes spokeswoman categorically denied that allegation.

"There was never any discussion of North Africans," she said. "The story is not true."

The spokeswoman said Winfrey came to the store 15 minutes after closing and a security guard informed her the store was closed and gave her a card, telling her she could come back the next day.

Surveillance videotape of the encounter supports the store's account, according to the spokeswoman.

She said the CEO of Hermes has called Winfrey's people to explain "the situation" and invited her to come back to shop in the store.

Like I said: Timing is Everything. She has movie to promote and this Non story suddenly comes up Again. Above story says it all. I remember it well. Oprah really is so full of herself. 6:30PM Store is closed. Even if You are Pope, come back next day. These people cant care less about who You are. White black or purple. They want to go home to their family. Bye Oprah. Its all about Racism with Oprah but only when it suits her. She is playing it like it suits her That time and this time. This is how I see it

Are you referring to the Hermes situation?

Are you referring to the Hermes situation?

Yes. I remember her crying Racism then. and it was right about when Crash came out. Absurd. She got turned away from Hermes because stores was Closed. Poor Oprah. they should just open the store for her at 3AM. She is Oprah, no? And I am pretty sure she would conveniently find something else racist. She;s got movie to push. She was walking in the store . bumped into mannequin and mannequin didnt say : "Sorry". Hermes mannequin is racist!. it was in Oprah's way when she wanted to buy $20K bag. LOL.

I think the poster on the other page made a good point when she said...
In the end, the experience of racism is inherently personal. Nor do I believe that it always requires visible proof observable by anyone other than the person on the receiving end of discrimination (based on one's race). When it happens to you... white, brown, or whatever... you know it.

And I think there are a few reasons people find it difficult to empathise with the O in this particular situation:
1. Oprah is in the top 1%.
2. Bad customer service is not uncommon and there are many factors (size, shape, age, nationality etc.) in addition to race that are used to profile the potential value of a customer.
3. The Swiss are rude to everyone.
4. It probably would have been more productive to report the SA to the manager when the incident happened before Oprah talked about it in a public forum. Talking about the incident without having dealt with it in store comes across as passive aggressive, to borrow someone else's phrase... "it's like taking a cannon to a flea".

that is one of my most favorite movies!!!! one of the best IMO. LOOOVE it and i have watched it dozens of times and never get tired of seeing it!

IMO, beloved is a great book, but one that never should have never been turned into a movie. I could watch the color purple once a month.

I quite enjoyed The Butler, actually sat all the way through the credits.

lol I might as well have wrote the movie given that I know all the dialogue. :roflmfao:

LOVE the Color Purple....best bonding time with family!

umm forget all this...why is Stedman still being referred to as her "fiance" c'mon son!

I rolled my eyes at that one.

She should've just showed the bag. End of story, honestly. Just cause you think she can't afford it don't mean anything. Most of the time people don't walk to these high end stores with every piece of jewelry they own and I'm sure Oprah was looking regular as hell cause she really isn't that flashy. I know I've experienced this kind before, but if I don't like the service I go to the manager (Oprah should've done this if she didn't). Girl missed out on some major commission though lol.

I would like to hear the SAs side. Most SA's are told by their head bosses probably that a certain kind can't afford it, but like I said just cause they not going in there looking like a million bucks don't mean anything. People going to learn one day.

Europe is a whole different ball of wax and then some. Unfortunately this episode is minor by Swiss standards.

In late summer 2007, when Switzerland elected its first black official, Ricardo Lumengo, at a council meeting in Biel, Lumengo was humiliated by party delegates of the Swiss freedom Party , as they ate bananas and chocolate "choco head" dramatically making monkeys' cries.

Since his election to the National Council Lumengo was repeatedly the victim of racist attacks as was the case in 2008 during his speech on May 1 in Langenthal where they threw him bananas. In October of the same year, he was insulted by a member of PNOS (Partei National Orientierter Schweizer) within the same party website with a contemptible text and a racist caricature.

Lumengo generally receives letters with racist insults after each media appearance. My swiss associates reassured me he would resign from frustration.

Oprah knows better....what she's doing is the equivalent of killing a mosquito with a gun.

No need to even acknowledge the ridiculous store. All the Nazis, racists and supremacists in the world are applauding them as we speak. Tourists are possibly planning a shopping pilgrimage to the store....
