Finally used my kit today. It's amazing! Love it! Don't understand why I didn't do it sooner.

Can anyone recommend a great lipstick red color? Sephora is out of the red one I planned to get. The name is escaping me at the moment...

Regarding OPI and shrinkage...I swore off OPI gel over a year ago because of this. Too many other brands to fight with gels that shrink. I gave OPI another try when Peace Love and OPI came out, and they have definitely changed the formula. You still have to shake the devil out of it, but it doesn't shrink anymore once you do :)

Do you have brand preferences? There's cheap and classic old Revlon colors like "Fire & Ice", "Cherries on Snow". Mac makes some iconic ones: I love their mattes like "Ruby Woo"/"RiRi Woo", and I've never bought "Russian Red" but it is a gorgeous shade, too. If you want something darker for the winter, Mac also has "Dark Deed" out at the moment as a limited edition shade, iirc.

I'm new in this section of the forum. I've been reading through the gel threads trying to decide on a lamp and etc. I love gel nail color but getting to the salon doesn't always work out for me like I would like it to so I thought having the option to do them myself would be nice. I love OPI nail color and have used them for years. I scored the Sephora OPI gel nail kit today for half price! All the OPI stuff was half price in the store. Unfortunately there wasn't a large selection of colors and the sale isn't online but I did pick up a few. Thanks to you all for the great tips! Hopefully, I'm able to use the kit without a problem. LOL! I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow....

It's awesome that you found those on clearance! I haven't been to Sephora since the Naked 3 came out, but I kept looking every time I was there to see if they'd put their Gelshine colors on clearance since they changed their nail polish brands. I noticed in the past few months they really cut down on their selection of gel polish colors in store, maybe because of that. :(

Thanks for the colors. I'm looking for a "classic" red in a gel that will work with LED light. High Maintenance is the OPI one I was thinking off. I couldn't remember the name before.

Yeah, I was told by a SA that the contract ran out between OPI and Sephora. It sounds like they won't have any more once they sell out. I've been checking my store since right before Christmas and they haven't got anything new in.

OPI Gelcolor has a classic cream red called Big Apple Red. If you use other gel polish lines, there are dupes of it as well. One of OPIs most popular red, I'm Not Really a Waitress, is also available in Gelcolor.

Under nail reference, there a swatch only thread for OPI Gelcolor, you can see if stone colors.

There's also another recently released color, In My Santa Suit (part of the Mariah Carey Holliday collection), a shimmery red. It's a very pretty color.

I'll check those out. Thanks!

OMG It JUST dawned on me that you meant "lipstick red" as in a shade and not a "red lipstick" color to pair with a mani. :noggin:

I like most of OPI gelcolor's reds by default, too.

One color you may find cheap if you check out Ulta, a pharmacy, or even your grocery store is Sally Hansen Gel polish--they're redoing their packaging or something and all of their colors are on clearance at a lot of stores. I used the color "Red My Lips" from the Sally Hansen Pro Gel polish line, and it was a really nice and classic bright red, pretty much comparable to the red base in OPI's "The Spy Who Loved Me". Here's my swatch of it: http://forum.purseblog.com/nail-car...-sog-swatches-only-792967-3.html#post25187326 They're only about $3.25 at Ulta at the moment, too!

That's too funny! I didn't even catch that you weren't talking about nail color. :roflmfao: Thanks for the suggestions! I'll see if I can find. :smile1:

On another note - I used "break a leg warmer" today. Nice gray color. I love it!

Question,
Anyone here get their OPI from eBay? I see plenty of sellers, but keep seeing warnings that if you buy from China and such it could be a fake.

I'm not sure if anyone has replied or not...sorry if it's a "dupe". I've purchased a lot from ebay and haven't had any issues. If I have had an issue, OPI has been gracious enough to replace my bottle. The key thing to look for is the printed number on the bottom of the bottle. That will show you the "lot" number and it helps OPI determine various things.

I've also purchased several from this site, although colors are limited: http://www.uvnailpolish.com/

I've been an OPI only person until I started using the EzFlow TruGel - which I love. I've since expanded to GELeration, INK, NSI and IBD and really find that I like the variety in colors. Also, the site I posted above has GREAT deals on pricing!

I have some polishes that even if i wrap the edge they still shrink away from the tip as well as the back of my nails & even the sides. Very annoying, but if you flash cure (cure 1 -3 fingers before they have a chance for the polish to shrink for 5 or 10 seconds) it will solve the problem. I have found that the 2nd coat won't have that problem.

I've found, especially with OPI GelColor that you have to ensure it's shaken well enough. I've had horrible shrinkage, especially on Nein! Nein! Nein! Ok Fine!, but when I found that shaking/mixing is the cure, it's worked like a charm on both the cuticle, side & free edge shrinkage.

Yeah I have more OPI regular nail polishes than any girl probably needs. LOL! Sephora doesn't have a large OPI gel polish selection anyway but my store was sold out of a lot of those colors. I think they had 5? And I only liked a few of those.

I understand Gelish works well with the OPI lamp. Any other brands that work well?
Hi FreakforCoach, when I first started sog'ing only CND Shellac was on the market and there wasn't many colors to choose from. I tried something that worked with my regular and gel polishes so that I could have a bigger selection of choices. I put the base coat gel polish, cured, then 1 or 2 coats gel top coat, cured each coat and then wiped the sticky residue to set. I then applied thin coats of my own OPI regular polish allowing each coat to dry thoroughly then put one last coat of top coat gel polish to set, sometimes adding a second layer. It worked like a charm and I could use all my favorite colors of regular polish! I've found that the gel top coat will go over the regular polish as long as it is thoroughly dry and has gel polishes underneath it. It will not, however, work on nails painted with just regular nail polish. Hope this helps you to use all your OPI nail polishes. Aloha, Andi

I'm an OPI addict and was thinking what a waste if I couldn't use the ones I already have. I'll give this a shot next time I do my nails. :ty:
