OMG this is an expensive lesson to learn...

things are even worse now.
the copy I have recieved from the reseller is just the re-exportation Cites certificate from the person/land the reseller bought it from. so this means:
my reseller never had a cites permit to import the bracelet to hongkong and never got a cites certificate to re-export it. now the bracelet is in europe and I have no permit, they cannot get one as they don´t have the bracelet anymore.
not even that I payed not too little money for the bracelet, I found out that there will be a fine to be payed of which I do not want to know how high it is. as I just found out about the fine three days ago I did not dare to ask anybody how high the amount might be as I fear it is going to be really bad.....
I even thought about taking a lawyer to get advice what to do now....
the thing I still cannot understand is, that I bought something legally produced within european union. I do not by some stolen ivory or something. I tried to explain this to the lady at the ministry where I should get the Cites permit, but she has been so rude and told me that one cannont buy something via internet not knowing what it is and if there are not the correct papers she will not fill in the allowance to import it. she got a little bit less unfriendly when I told her that it was am Hermes item, produced within the EU and so on. but hte whole situation is horrible!!!
when all this is over and I have back my nerves for this topic I will start a thread so that everybody knows what to do when thinking about buying exotics via internet from another state or continent! if would have known, I would have asked the reseller about this certificate.....
this all is so blonde ( I am blonde;);););) )
I decided not to get too desperate.....

:hugs:I am so sorry to hear all of this. Is there anything that Hermes might be able to do -- or is this out of their hands, since the Cites must be received at the time of purchase (from the time of purchase done at Hermes)?

This is a very unfortunate thing, but a Very BIG Thank You for highlighting these so that other TPF members can learn from this, cause most reseller will always tell you No Problem sure will go through customs.....

Save your time and energy ....
As this will apply to your own experience only , aka to your own country's customs rules.

What people have to do :
1-check one's own country regulations regarding Cites eligible items importation .
2- ask their seller to ship and include papers according to those regulations.

or/ ask their seller to skip the sensitive words on the customs declaration and take responsibility/appropriate action, if anything goes wrong at arrival in their country.
Usually, it goes just fine if nothing sensitive is written on customs declaration. In my experience LOW PROFILE is always safer.

Actually one has to understand how it works :
A parcel will be hold by customs at entry of country of destination, if anything written on the custom declarations catches attention of the custom agents.
Then they will check if appropriate papers are included. If not , they will hold the parcel and open a file. They will contact recipient to get the missing papers and/or open the parcel and check what's inside.
and so on....
So the very first step is to write NOTHING that could catch attention, especially if the appropriate papers are missing.

Ps : I'm blonde too but I have learned my lesson :sneaky:

oh dear, I'm very very sorry to hear OP has to go through such a harrowing experience. This is just so traumatizing over a little item like a bracelet.

hi everybody,
I just wanted to update that I am back from my holiday (france, britanny, rainy windy but the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen within Europe and sooo friendly people).
I have been to customs today with a cites formular my seller sent via email.
the first time I just felt there would be a small possibility to get my bracelet somewhen...
they told me that I should turn to some ministery now with this copy and with some other forms to be filled out (and payed to have the people at the ministery worked on them....)
if it is the right cites paper that I need for my import I need the original one and not just a copy.
at least there is a little chance now to get this bracelet but I think this is in no way worth all the trouble!!!!
I really think I am living in a country where all customs people are so bored (sorry for this) that they stick to such incidents.
I am lucky, I am living near this customs place where all EMS and USPS parcels get stuck, so now I know the two people working there and they know me. However law is law and cites is a good thing but for me: I just want my bracelet!!!

U think someone at customs s enjoying your fine bracelet?

Exactly. Good information. I have bought many exotic items and never had a problem. Nothing has been written that would stand out.

katika, I am sorry you are going through this mess, and I wish you good luck!

I start to think that they just got the impression that I just have been really stupid not to think about the exotic leather.
actually the problem people are not at customs but in the ministery where they fill in the import permition certificate. the lady there told me that they might use it for training other customs people to identify exotic leather......

thank you perlerare for your answer.

the reason why I thought about starting a thread is, that I think I am not the only one who did not htink about asking for Cites papers and those you would need in every country exept those where the import of such leathers is completely forbidden.

in my case the problem was not the text on the customs declaration ( used leather bracelet ) but the price I asked the seller to fill in ( 300$ ). this made them suspicious as it isquite a lot of money for a used leather bracelet and this was why they opened it....

I have learned my lesson aswell now:yes:

exactly, a little item, but hughe troubles....
the worst thing was that at the beginning when I got to know that I will get a fine I felt like a criminal....

thank you lovely64, in my case it had worked before too, so I felt safe.... but then it had worked because the seller had declared a dog chain:graucho: and low value. so there was nothing to be suspicious about.
and now they will never ever forget my name. they might open every parcel now.... I have to use UPS and FEDEX from now on if possible. EMS, USPS, they all get stuck at this customs place.
and I will ALWAYS ask for Cites papers and otherwise I will not buy anything!!!

no, Hermes cannot do anything in my case. this is just a Cites paper problem......:-s
thank you for thinking about me and my bracelet!

Of course !

Besides beeing LOW PROFILE, one needs to be CONSISTANT.

And from my own experience which is pretty extensive, the ultimate parameter is the individual custom agent at the other end.
With the exact same combination of parcel, weight, papers, one will let the pack go, while the next one will stop it and start investigating.

In another post I will tell you the story of a vintage croc Kelly entering the USA....There will be a lot to laugh about that one...

On occasion, the custom flickers still open some parcels they find suspicios.

My friend sent me a Chanel bag from France and stated "used bag", and $80, instead "a gift".
They opened it, saw the bag that ddnt look $80 at all and requested a prove from me that the bag was actually $80. Like bank statement, paypal transfer or something like this.
Obviously I could not prove that. They shipped it back to France.

I love to laugh!
so I will be happy about your post!
thank you for your always so understanding and helpful posts!!!

Ok so, I will be a bit off topic ....

I once sold a vintage Kelly Porosus croc to a lovely lady in the USA.

She asked me to ship the bag with a Cites and declare full value. So I applied for a cites for the bag, (2 weeks wait) and got it...perfect
I fedex the bag with its Cites and full value declared.

The bag get stuck in the US customs for the reason that "there are no crocodiles in the country of exportation, so this country is not allowed to release a Cites permit for a crocodile item ...."

L O L

I had to write a long email to this agent, to explain exactly the long journey of that poor crocodile, since it was killed sometime between 1970 and 1972 somewhere in Australia (pre-Cites BTW), until it arrived 30 years later, that day, at the US border, in the shape of a pre-owned Kelly bag....

It took 4 weeks to this gentleman to finally make a decision.
