I agree-- I have several exotic bags from LV and Gucci, no one ever gave me CITES for them, or even mentioned the issue. I also haven't had trouble traveling between countries with them... but threads like this make me worry.
And, it definitely doesn't seem like all online sellers address it either?

Legally they can't lie to custom, especially when the seller is a company and has to follow all the import and export law and regulations. Everything goes thru custom has to have at least 1) description 2) value 3) country of origin. If anyone lies on the custom declaration form of the shipment, there's hefty fine and more, especially in Europe (if found out thoughI'm so sorry to hear this, I myself ship things to AU, just regular clothing and accessories, and i have a high percentage lost shipment and late deliveries probably due to Custom, so i know how you feel
I don't understand, you said they didn't open the package yet somehow they know its exotic? Did the seller actually was stupid enough to write the info on the custom form?
I know this is not Europe related, but California (U.S.) does not allow shipments of python products into and/or to be sold within that state.I agree !!! I looked at a pair of Alexandre Birman's python ballerinas on Nordstrom's website and a message came up : "This item is made from genuine python and is not available for shipment to Italy".
I would never have even thought this was a problem at the time, obviously I know now !!!
Of course we shouldn't lie about what's inside, i.e. I write pig when it's really cow, but I think it's always a grey area how extent one should write the description of the product,I'd just simply put "bracelet" or "handbag" which is still the truth. So really what's the point of writing these exact words like "exotic" and "lizard" if it's only meant for the Customs to find out, I would not risk it for my buyers. I would never in a million years write lizard skin or exotic leather to get my customer in trouble.Legally they can't lie to custom, especially when the seller is a company and has to follow all the import and export law and regulations. As I reread the letter from customs I saw that they already knew it was exotic leather when I went there to get the bracelet. I Never Read the Letter As I Know the procedure by now As it is Not the First Time I have been there.I'm so sorry to hear this, I myself ship things to AU, just regular clothing and accessories, and i have a high percentage lost shipment and late deliveries probably due to Custom, so i know how you feel

Thank you, this is good to Know.In my experience, you should not even mention the word CITES.
Simply try to kindly insist that the item was Made in France, so the skins it was made of MUST have been imported legally to EU initially...Hermes makes thousands of items each year from legally imported CITES protected skins.....
If someone says the word Cites, then only, ask if they will release the item if you can obtain a CITES permit of importation.
Then contact your local Cites office and ask for a permit of importation for this item .
But frankly, I would insist the the item was MADE IN FRANCE. France is the COUNTRY OF ORIGIN of this item, France is in the EU . This item is coming back in the EU. That should be good enough. YES.
It is a bracelet, not a live animal !
You are so right. EMS is just the worst Way to send anything.Of course we shouldn't lie about what's inside, i.e. I write pig when it's really cow, but I think it's always a grey area how extent one should write the description of the product,I'd just simply put "bracelet" or "handbag" which is still the truth. And as for the value, some company actually doesn't include any invoice (if it's not a heavy item because heavier item requires invoice usually to clear customs) or anything that Custom can trace how much the company is charging the customers, again no one can say you're lying or do anything wrong unless otherwise proved.
And maybe the OP or everyone should check what kind of shipment company the seller is using, EMS tends to come from China the most, so Customs around the world DEFINITELY check EMS packages way often than regular packages or maybe UPS, FedEx. If you get a chance, request seller not to ship with EMS as it's higher risk that you'll be charged duties or your packages get confiscated
But here are some contacts for you in Austria, maybe one of them can help you.
