OMG this is an expensive lesson to learn...

I agree-- I have several exotic bags from LV and Gucci, no one ever gave me CITES for them, or even mentioned the issue. I also haven't had trouble traveling between countries with them... but threads like this make me worry.

And, it definitely doesn't seem like all online sellers address it either?

Gucci will give a CITES free of charge if you mention to the SA before you buy, I would recommend doing so if you travel Internationally and may want to travel with one of your bags. Personal and household items are generally exempt but you never know who you get at customs.

SLGs are not quite as important - unless a customs officer is liable to look through your bag. Wow, I never even think of SLGs, maybe I should I have plenty.

I have a friend who works as a customs officer (in Oz) I'll ask him the rules, he loves his own designer goodies so hopefully he'll know.

Quite frankly the reality seems totally subjective so I just leave my exotics in Europe.

Most people on tPF don't know the difference between embossed and real croc so the chances of a customs official looking for dirty diamonds, ferocious fruit, and bush meat will pull over an Hermes/LV/Gucci croc bag and think that the skin is illegally poached is probably quite small but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

just to understand this: the item changed coutry and owner so this is positive for me or not?

In my experience, you should not even mention the word CITES.

Simply try to kindly insist that the item was Made in France, so the skins it was made of MUST have been imported legally to EU initially...Hermes makes thousands of items each year from legally imported CITES protected skins.....

If someone says the word Cites, then only, ask if they will release the item if you can obtain a CITES permit of importation.
Then contact your local Cites office and ask for a permit of importation for this item .

But frankly, I would insist the the item was MADE IN FRANCE. France is the COUNTRY OF ORIGIN of this item, France is in the EU . This item is coming back in the EU. That should be good enough. YES.

It is a bracelet, not a live animal !

I'm so sorry to hear this, I myself ship things to AU, just regular clothing and accessories, and i have a high percentage lost shipment and late deliveries probably due to Custom, so i know how you feel

I don't understand, you said they didn't open the package yet somehow they know its exotic? Did the seller actually was stupid enough to write the info on the custom form?

Legally they can't lie to custom, especially when the seller is a company and has to follow all the import and export law and regulations. Everything goes thru custom has to have at least 1) description 2) value 3) country of origin. If anyone lies on the custom declaration form of the shipment, there's hefty fine and more, especially in Europe (if found out though :graucho:). One of my friend got a fine of 700 eur for his mistake.

I agree !!! I looked at a pair of Alexandre Birman's python ballerinas on Nordstrom's website and a message came up : "This item is made from genuine python and is not available for shipment to Italy".

I would never have even thought this was a problem at the time, obviously I know now !!!
I know this is not Europe related, but California (U.S.) does not allow shipments of python products into and/or to be sold within that state.

Of course we shouldn't lie about what's inside, i.e. I write pig when it's really cow, but I think it's always a grey area how extent one should write the description of the product,I'd just simply put "bracelet" or "handbag" which is still the truth. So really what's the point of writing these exact words like "exotic" and "lizard" if it's only meant for the Customs to find out, I would not risk it for my buyers. I would never in a million years write lizard skin or exotic leather to get my customer in trouble.

And as for the value, some company actually doesn't include any invoice (if it's not a heavy item because heavier item requires invoice usually to clear customs) or anything that Custom can trace how much the company is charging the customers, again no one can say you're lying or do anything wrong unless otherwise proved.

And maybe the OP or everyone should check what kind of shipment company the seller is using, EMS tends to come from China the most, so Customs around the world DEFINITELY check EMS packages way often than regular packages or maybe UPS, FedEx. If you get a chance, request seller not to ship with EMS as it's higher risk that you'll be charged duties or your packages get confiscated

As I reread the letter from customs I saw that they already knew it was exotic leather when I went there to get the bracelet. I Never Read the Letter As I Know the procedure by now As it is Not the First Time I have been there.
And on the shipping paper which has also been added to my customs Letter it says nothing about exotics.
It is just that they Open EVERY EMS parcel.
I hate EMS.

You are so right. EMS is just the worst Way to send anything.
From all the Things I ever bought I only had Problems with items Sent via EMS.
Next Time I will ask for another shipping Company for sure.

hi everybody,
I just wanted to update that I am back from my holiday (france, britanny, rainy windy but the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen within Europe and sooo friendly people).
I have been to customs today with a cites formular my seller sent via email.
the first time I just felt there would be a small possibility to get my bracelet somewhen...
they told me that I should turn to some ministery now with this copy and with some other forms to be filled out (and payed to have the people at the ministery worked on them....)
if it is the right cites paper that I need for my import I need the original one and not just a copy.
at least there is a little chance now to get this bracelet but I think this is in no way worth all the trouble!!!!
I really think I am living in a country where all customs people are so bored (sorry for this) that they stick to such incidents.
I am lucky, I am living near this customs place where all EMS and USPS parcels get stuck, so now I know the two people working there and they know me. However law is law and cites is a good thing but for me: I just want my bracelet!!!

I am so sorry to hear about this! Have you any updates on your Kelly Dog?

Cheers,
Dagny
things are even worse now.
the copy I have recieved from the reseller is just the re-exportation Cites certificate from the person/land the reseller bought it from. so this means:
my reseller never had a cites permit to import the bracelet to hongkong and never got a cites certificate to re-export it. now the bracelet is in europe and I have no permit, they cannot get one as they don´t have the bracelet anymore.
not even that I payed not too little money for the bracelet, I found out that there will be a fine to be payed of which I do not want to know how high it is. as I just found out about the fine three days ago I did not dare to ask anybody how high the amount might be as I fear it is going to be really bad.....
I even thought about taking a lawyer to get advice what to do now....
the thing I still cannot understand is, that I bought something legally produced within european union. I do not by some stolen ivory or something. I tried to explain this to the lady at the ministry where I should get the Cites permit, but she has been so rude and told me that one cannont buy something via internet not knowing what it is and if there are not the correct papers she will not fill in the allowance to import it. she got a little bit less unfriendly when I told her that it was am Hermes item, produced within the EU and so on. but hte whole situation is horrible!!!
when all this is over and I have back my nerves for this topic I will start a thread so that everybody knows what to do when thinking about buying exotics via internet from another state or continent! if would have known, I would have asked the reseller about this certificate.....
this all is so blonde ( I am blonde;);););) )
I decided not to get too desperate.....
