Re: Olive Oil or Extra Virgin Olive Oil?
"I would consider you a novice collector. You only have a few bags and are young. Light patina to me says you do not have to carry this bag everyday because you have plenty of bags. JMHO"

Well said, I can totally agree with this statement. I see nothing rude or snobby about it. It's the truth!

I agree with this...cept the fact anyone being novice....being novice or long term collector doesn't neccesarily mean one has more knowledge of LV or has better opinions on it. I think we are just putting in our opinions and no one should take to offense...so cheers girls!!

So you could care less if you bought a bag on ebay that had olive oil rubbed into it? Then several years later it rots out? And you spent good money for it?

What about if you have a food allergy? Some people do. I just think it's gross to sell a bag with olive oil on it.

For personal use, fine. For sale?.....you go buy it Selena. I know I wouldn't, nor would I let a friend buy such a thing.

Why would i buy it when I already have one with EVOO on it? DUH! LOL
My whole point was you never know what you are getting when you buy used. If you are that worried you should buy a brand new one!

Hey bagsnbags (and other EVOO users),

1. how old is the oldest LV bag that you've used EVOO on?
2. Is there ANY smell at all?
3. Does the leather feel any different?
4. Does the application of olive oil make the natural patina process go nore quickly or slowly. (I know it makes it darker but if you use your bag with olive oil a lot, does it make the effects of the sun and outside deepen your bag's EVOO patina more quickly or more slowly than if you never used the EVOO at all?)
5. Does the olive oil attract dirt? Does it repel dirt at all?

Sorry for all the questions! I just wanted a very thorough collection of people's experiences so I can decide for myself! I agree a little bit with caannie about edible oils turning rancid eventually so...the wealth of information is overwhelming!

I would think most sellers don't disclose everything that has happened to a bag or been spilled on a bag or used to condition a bag in their Ebay auctions. But that is why I am here now discouraging everyone from oiling up their bags!! I don't want to be the recipient of an "olive oiled" bag from Ebay one day in the future!! ;)

Stick to products intended for use on leather! :)

Caannie your little girl is ADORABLE! I want to get pregnant and have a girl just to buy her a mini sac hl! LOL To cute!!!!!

Please reread her post. SHE is the one calling people with light patina novice collectors.

no she is talking about the asian ladies with patina-ed bags who look down on new bags and view the collectors as novice.

I have actually seen a seller mention that they have used applegarde on their LV bag and that they suntanned it by a windowsill. Makes me feel more assured that they are that honest!

Having a bag with no patina makes you look like an LV newbie, like you JUST bought this bag and had to take it out RIGHT NOW - kind of like noveau riche

I believe this is the quote people are referring to. It doesn't say "In some parts of the world other people think having a bag with no patina..." It seems to be stated as the opinion of the original poster.

I really don't think patina is an adequate indicator of riche status, nouveau or not! A better indicator would be not caring a bit what anyone else thinks about your bags! If they please you, then that is all that matters. Who cares what anyone else thinks? ;) I certainly wouldn't make an effort to patina my bags just because some stranger on the street doesn't like my light vachetta.

And I certainly wouldn't use cooking oil to speed up the process of the patina (but I think I have already mentioned that!!)

I'm with you and I'm not asian lol. Carrying an LV with no patina makes you look like a novice collector. Even I admit to eyeing girls with brand new pieces thinking "wow, were you in a rush to take that one out" - I tan my bags in the sun before taking them out.

Beg to differ Sophia. These quotes are quite ironic actually...

Okay, it's all beginning to make sense now... kind of... I'm really thankful for this thread.... there is so much to learn,,, which makes life so great.... LV is a whole world of its own.... a very chic , modern, old, understated, and fraught with tensions, desires and passions...

yep. Ima newbie... oh well... gotta start sometime.... what if I die tomorrow??? If so, I GOTS that panda agenda... pricey yes... Authentic??? ABSOLUTELY...

Should be receiving my cherry blossom pochette very soon, it was advertised as never used with natural oxidation... OMG! I get it...

She was responding to my post:

lol crazybaglady,

Well in asian countries, especiallu Taiwan and Japan, (you can quote me on this) almost EVERY SINGLE ONE of the girls, from 14 and up own and carry an authentic louis vuitton. these ladies do not want to seem like a "louis vuitton rookie" therefore a used patina makes them seem more like a seasoned collector. (the info below is from http://www.hisremnant.org/Vuitton/patina.html

BUT, just about everybody has Louis Vuitton in Japan. If there are 5 ladies at a cash register of a grocery store, expect 3-4 of them carrying Louis Vuitton. The lady in front of you may pull the exact same wallet that's in your purse! So they think carrying a brand new purse with a brand new leather makes them look like a Louis Vuitton newbie, and they want to look like a seasoned collector!

^that was the post she responded to, and i think she was talking about the asian ladies opinion on light leather bags.

My personal preference are bags with light leather and I go out of my way to keep them light. And I've been collecting bags for a very long time. No way would I be considered a novice collector :smile1:

If you love and want instant patina, I would suggest using saddle soap. It's a product made for leather and it significantly darkens vachetta. (and you can buy it in the grocery store, just a few aisles down from the cooking oil section ;) )
