Ode to Hermes Poncho

The SM at my boutique told me that the ponchos have always sold well, which is comforting to know because I'm past the age of jumping on the trend bandwagon.

Speaking of succumbing to trends, I decided the Burberry monogram colorblock poncho was becoming overexposed, so I called to take my name off the list. The SA said "really?!? We have over 500 names and have stopped taking new names, so you should keep your place." 500 names at one store, perhaps he was exaggerating, but the thought of that many colorblock ponchos running around makes my head spin. So much for a "unique" piece...

The H poncho is much more under the radar and something that can be worn for years.

I'll probably get stoned by the masses for saying this but Burberry is soooo easily faked (at least the pattern is like everywhere) and way too common looking. I'd rather have no name brand than be on a "list" for anything Burberry. Sorry. I rarely rant...

Off-topic just for another nanosecond, promise: I got the Burberry monogrammed colorblock wrap back when it first became available after the runway show (February 2013!) and its blocks of camel, burgundy, teal, etc. make it versatile, so i do like it. . . BUT, the original "classic" check was hugely over-exposed for a decade, put on literally EVERYTHING (purses, bikinis, dog carriers!) and I agree, IF, I was never a fan either. I think that's why the current reinvention of Burberry is relying much less on that pattern.
Overall, Hermes colors and designs seem to stand the test of time much better than most. I just hope the current upheavals in inventory and quality will smooth out as their rapid global expansion moderates. . . .

Yay! Well guess what? I wanna see PICS of you in BOTH :giggles:

This is what my SA told me too! She said there was a long time it was permanently out of stock (although with H, this could be anything). She said it had always sold very well. With the huge comeback of the poncho this season, I can only see them selling out faster!

^^^You and I are on the same wavelength re: the Burberry poncho, Monceau. I bought the color-blocked one, but in a mix that hasn't been seen everywhere (it was black and grey). After keeping it for a week, I took it back to Burberry, and the SAs looked at me like I had two heads! Same message was delivered to me: hundreds of people are on the list for this, are you sure you want to return it? Yup, don't want to see it coming and going on the streets of Toronto! And I'm with you on the H poncho too...far more under the radar. I have never seen anyone wearing it here. Hopefully Cara Delevingne or Sarah Jessica Parker don't suddenly decide the H poncho is "IT" any time soon!

I completely agree, xiangxiang! It's interesting to know that the H poncho always sold well. If it were not for Israeli_Flava starting this thread, I would have never known it existed. :shame:

I've worn mine every day as well, both at home and out, and have decided that a second one is a must. I have so many GMs, might as well have two of something I will wear on a near-constant basis. :smile1:

HfromT, you have convinced me I need the dark gray, you little enabler! ;)

Fortunately, my BF has warmed up to the poncho on my second go-round, I guess my little styling trick helped...:p
The only objection in my house was my little pup, who went running, head down and tail between his legs, when he saw me! Miraculously, he has succumbed to the poncho as well, as it has proven to be a good perch for a lap dog.

Thank you, Monceau! My (very small) doubt if a second one is really necessary has vanished completely by now! :D I am also thinking: If I would have two, the one I am wearing every day now, might take a rest from time to time and will last even longer. Right? ;) Not sure if this will convince my DH but I will definitely try - with your genius idea how to warm our men to the poncho, I am sure I will succeed. :graucho:

I'm so envious of all the ladies here who rock the poncho. I was even thinking of trying it with some really high platform heels. :p Well, the sudden arrival of the arctic cold freezes that idea and the need for a poncho turned into a parka. Enjoy, ladies! I'll live vicariously through your mod pics. :D

Ladies, I have one question. Do you ladies plan to wear the poncho instead of a coat, or you plan to wear it on top of a coat? I am browsing Burberry website and their stock photos are all showing the models wearing ponchos on top of their trench coat.

I was told by an SA at Hermes that they promote them as a unisex layering piece. In SoCal a poncho may be enough as a wrap during the winter months but not in more continental climes. I cannot imagine wearing it alone back east without a parka or heavy coat underneath when temps drop below freezing. I think they would be great indoors to keep warm when you turn the furnace down.

If I choose to don poncho when it's really cold, I was thinking one of the newer flat, fitted down jackets in an appropriate color would be a good underlayer. It would be really warm, but would disappear under the wrap. Haven't tried it yet--gotta find the right jacket.

In Autumn, instead of a coat/jacket and in Winter, over a jacket. You'd have to try with your wardrobe.

The slightly boho look of the H poncho doesn't really marry well with a city smart trench for me. Likewise Crombie or tailored outerwear. I've worn my poncho in the rain but not actually purposely put it on for rain.

Unless someone is 6'+ tall any full length coat with an H poncho may be too much, but over a slim fitted jacket or thick jumper fine .

I'm in the south, so I plan to wear it instead of a coat with warm sweater underneath when it's cold here. Of coarse for you ladies in places where it really gets cold you"ll need more than that.

Mindi B, this is exactly how I wore mine last night. Temps here are dipping below zero now, so I layered the poncho on top of a very light Patagonia down "sweater". It was great, and because the Patagonia is black, it just disappeared under the poncho. I've also worn a slim leather jacket underneath. I'm trying to wear it as much as possible now, before the -10 to -25 temps make it impossible!
