I also have a problem carrying flashy high end bags for work, it's just not appropriate in my job and office.
So I have a rather large collection of Furla and Cole Haan bags. They are great quality and definitely affordable, especially if you shop around. Smartbargains.com has some really good CH work appropriate totes right now, Furla is having a half price sale on stores and online. Also try Yoox for Furla, I have gotten some great delas from them.
Banana Republic bags are also great quality, and you can find them for less on eBay too.

I have found some beautiful Italian leather bags at Winners (like a TJ Maxx in Canada) by lesser-known brands like Madi Pelletteria and Marzia, that are extremely well-made and are just lovely, buttery, smooshy leather.

Roots leather, wears well and can stand the test of time. I had one for about 4 yrs and it still looks new. Most of their leather bags are pebbled leather so it wears great!

www.roots.com, I find online doesnt have much so you might want to check instore.

^ Aren't Grysons starting to run into the $600 - 700 range? I was browsing NM one day and it actually stuck out to me that they WERE quite expensive for what they are...I bought a Gucci canvas bag as a gift for my MIL last September and it was around $650. So I actually thought "wow, Grysons cost the same as some higher end brands now".

Actually more like 900+ Their much smaller bags are 600-700 & most are now made of nylon:sad:

I would love to have a Prada Antik Cervo but I'm SO happy with my Linea Pelle that I won on eBay for only $120! It's HUGE and has soft, thick, luxe leather and fabulous hardware details! When I'm not wearing it I find myself looking at it lovingly as it sits on my handbag shelf!

I picked up a Liz Claiborne leather bag at Costco a couple of months ago. I bought it for travel - it's really big. That bag is TDF. The leather is thick, pebbled, feels like buttah and smells like heaven. The inside is lined with suede or microsuede with leather trim and it's got several well-sized pockets. The price was unbelievable - $57!!!!!!! I'm truly impressed with the bag and now I'm seaching for a smaller one that I can carry everyday even though I know I'll pay at least $100 more.

Oh, Funny you should mention Elliot Lucca. I was at Sam's today and they had them near the jewelry showcase. I was surprised to see handbags there, and I liked theElliot Lucca bags that they had there. All under $200.

I have several Elliot Lucca bags and they were my absolute favorites until I bought a Linea Pelle which is MUCH nicer for the same amount of money!

I bought two bags on eBay today for $100 each and I'm hoping for the best--here are pics and links:

a Francesco Biasia, my first of this brand:

and a Rivington, a brand I had never heard of before:

I vote Banana Republic. But if you're looking for something a little more "designery", maybe a Rebecca Minkoff Market Tote? You can usually find some in your price range on ebay or occasionally on sale if you keep an eye out.

If you have a TJ Maxx or Marshalls near you, I'd check there. Last time I was at the Marshalls here, I seen a lot of all leather bags that I really liked and looked like they were nice quality for under $100. I even seen one for $19.99 that I regret not buying because I liked it so much.

If someone wanted to purchase a very good quality bag, but didn't want a high end designer name (or price tag) what would you wonderful purse experts recommend? Is there such a thing?

I like good materials, and craftmanship.
