I second the M0851 bags! They're made by a Canadian firm. I was in their shop in Paris recently and the bags are very sleek and understated but obviously good quality. I think they also have a shop in NYC. Prices range from approx $250-$350. I think M0851's website shop is closed until June though.

I think Cole Haan would be just perfect for your needs. Most of their designs are somewhat conservative/classic, which is perfect for work use. Their leather is very durable. They don't have blingy visible brand names. And best of all, if you have a Saks Off 5th or a Neiman Marcus Last Call nearby, there are always some Cole Haans there on clearance. (Probably Nordstrom Rack too, but I don't have one near me so I can't say for sure).

You also might want to check out Furla... it's an often-overlooked brand, but the leather is wonderful, the craftsmanship is excellent (still made in Italy, I believe?), and the styling is classic, understated, and elegant -- perfect for work. You can usually find several styles on sale for around $200 online at Bluefly or SmartBargains.com, and I've seen them at TJ Maxx as well.

Some of the Cole Haan tote bags are lovely and they're work horses. They're always going on sale on the Cole Haan web site and on smartbargains.com. Look for money-off codes in the Deals & Steals subforum here. It seems like every few weeks lately there's been a 30 percent off code posted for the CH web site.

The leather is scrumptious and the bag is roomy enough for lunch and papers. Although the straps are thin. You'd probably want something thicker if you're going to be packing books.

Defiinitely check out IGNES handbags. You can customize the hardware, suede lining colors and so much more. There are a couple of bags that may work for your needs, the Chiara and the Ormala come to mind.

If you hit it right you can find some nice bags at TJ Maxx or Marshalls...lesser known Italian brands and also Michael Kors, Cole Haan and other recognizable names. Usually under $200.
