Neiman Marcus has the WORST customer service

Well I'm definitely not in the tax bracket that Neiman's usually caters to, but I shop for all my beloved Kiehls products there because of one experience I had this past summer. I was meeting my friend at the mall before I had classes at 12. I had just come from my boyfriend's house so I was looking a little schluppy in a hoody, jeans and flipflops. (I'm a guy). I had my LV Passport Wallet and that was the only thing on me that looked classy, trust me. But the moment I walked in, everyone was so helpful. The lady at the Kiehls counter was so sweet and gave my friend Bri a free travel bag when he told her he was going to Munich for a week. She also loaded him up with sample sizes for everything. Then she turned to me and asked me what my skin concerns were and proceeded to fill a bag up for me of samples. When my friend Bri goes to pay, the other SA tells us, "Oh I'm so sorry, we only take Neiman's card or Amex, cash or check." She told us she'd hold our items while we ran to the ATM beside the Louis Vuitton store. When we returned, they gave my friend Bri a discount for his trouble and apologized profusely. Then they told us to come back and let us know if we liked/hated the samples. Even after our sale was complete, one of the SAs talked to us for about fifteen minutes, coaching us on the "men" from munich and her experiences there in a really nice fun way. I will never forget the way everyone, I mean EVERYONE, at the creed counter, in the Chanel boutique, etc, were so nice to us even though we looked like poor broke college kids, (which we are). They earned my loyalty right then and there. It's the first time I've been somewhere where people gave me the kind of CS I try to give. (I work retail). Maybe their online CS and some specific stores are just horrible, but everyone should come to the small SouthPark Mall store in Charlotte. They are really going beyond the southern hospitality I was raised to expect.

My neighbor makes frequent mail order purchases from NM. How do I know this? Her address was incorrect in NM's system, and I would receive her parcels at my doorstep. I placed several calls to NM CS to have her address corrected but to no avail. I finally went to our local NM store in person and returned one of her parcels to CS explaining to them why they needed to correct her address in their system. He looked at me as if to ask me as to why I didn't just take her parcel to her house and leave it at her doorstep. I wanted to make sure that she received all of her future parcels first-hand. He thanked me for being honest and presented me with a NM candle. I never did receive another of my neighbor's NM parcels after the in-person visit.

NMLC accepts VISA Signature as does SO5th. I guess they figure only us poor folks would have a VISA and/or Mastercard and shop in their clearance centers.

I was discussing these issues w/ my SA and her POV was pretty interesting. . .
She said there has to be a very high return rate to even have the system flag the customer - like 70% return rate.

Yes, I am indecisive/picky about my Bals ;). But seriously, they should be upfront about their policy so the consumer knows and I guess choose their returns carefully. Thankfully I have another retailer to buy my Bals. One that has better leather and quality. I'll just stick with them.

I read an article in Vogue that answers this well. Unless, you have bank and I mean BANK, NM SA's don't really have too much time for you. They want to deal with customers who come in where the SA has already put whole wardrobes on display for them to choose from with the CL's included.

Sad, but true. The law of business. Some of the higher end stores are not really geared toward all customers, but to specific customers. Marketing y'know.

Now saying all that, I shop at Neiman's very little, but when I have I have found them to be helpful to me with no crazy comments about not accepting a form of currency. Just a question if I had the type they honor. One salesperson was very sweet letting me know about an upcoming promotional in terms of pricing when I was looking at some handbags. BUT I had a friend go to look at CL's at NM and the salesman was breathtakingly rude to her.

I'm pretty ambivalent about them. Though my aunt enjoys them.

Neiman's IS so rude. I agree with you ladies. If you're dressed well, they'll be nice (with that fake smile). But, if I walk in w/ my jeans or casual dress, they're just so snobby. plus, their return policy sucks. $10 shipping for a return?? Unfort there closest neiman for me is in white plains, ny which is a long drive...

I am so glad I found this thread! I called NM this week to ask about ordering a pair of Christian Louboutin boots. I wanted to see if they would match the price found on another website for the exact same boots. They put me on hold for 1/2 an hour and then said that they would call me back. Well, they never did. Then when I called them back the next day they were very rude. I told them I would be purchasing the boots from Barney's instead of them; they didn't seem to care. I have a credit card with them and it was a $1200 purchase. I am not going to shop with them anymore. If possible, I would rather shop somewhere else. For what they charge they need to have better customer service.

That's nice for them if they can get away with it in this economy.

If not, maybe they should look at their job titles as SALES associates and actually work to make some sales.

I've had both kinds of experiences at NM. HOWEVER, every time I have shopped at NM Last Call, I have felt like I was treated like royalty.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I am SO OVER the SA's who won't serve you or act snooty if you are dressed less than them. I usually shop on weekends and I am often dressed for comfort, not for style. I'm not a tween who considers a mall visit to be the very best-dressed occasion I may be attending that week.

If I am going shopping and plan to try on clothes, I want items that slip on and off easily, and no worry about my hair and makeup getting messed up.

They should also consider it a favor, as I do not have to risk getting makeup on anything.

I've had nothing but super good experiences (VERY similar to emojosh's), and also primarily at the Kiehl's department. I've even painlessly made a couple small exchanges, and have been ENCOURAGED to do so by the SAs when products aren't right for me.

I've been greeted and treated nicely (if not downright friendly like!) in several other departments (other skincare/fragrance departments, mens, jewelry/watches/sunglasses, home, theshowroom/Horchow, etc.). I do not have a Neiman's card (no high-rolling incircle member here), nor do I dress super nice or trendy. In fact, I am always in a rather inexpensive t-shirt (Express, Calvin Klein), store-brand jeans from Macy's, and somewhat ragged sneakers. So yeah, I could come off as a "poor college kid" too. Disclaimer: Everyone dresses in a relaxed way in this part of the country though.

The only somewhat standoffish department was the La Mer counter when I had to go there to redeem a free sample coupon (I think seeing a guy threw the two older salesladies for a loop).

My ultra nice SA calls me for every event, which is something that others have said they would, yet never ever do (Barneys, Nordstrom). Ever. -_-

I've been treated MUCH more poorly in Nordstrom (very bad product knowledge, unwilling to give samples, argued with, abandoned at a cashwrap) and Saks (salesgirl made a snooty comment).

Product/price being equal, I would shop at NM any day over Nordstrom, which is weird considering how Nordstrom's "thing" is supposed to be customer service. I also find that NM SAs more "real" and natural/conversational than other stores, if that makes sense.

Online: I've ordered from Horchow and Bergdorf Goodman before and had no problems. The most recent BG item came beautifully giftwrapped (for free) with the GWP, all in immaculate condition.

FYI: NM doesn't pricematch...

I don't like NM as a company and their mission statement, well is lacking when it comes to customer retention.

However, I've had some positive experiences there and wouldn't mind going again. I'm just in a "no full retail buying" phase. A Chanel SA dropped off a bag at my house after her shift ended since I couldn't make the drive up there. Was very sweet and I gained a lot of respect for her.

I still have had nothing but amazing service there.
I don't dress up. Ever, LOL! And I wear very minimal makeup, but always am welcomed at the minimum.
I usually shop at the ones in Dallas, but was in Houston last month and received the same consistent fab service.

shigeru I totally agree with that nordstroms comment, I really don't see anything spectacular about their service

I don't shop at neimans as much as saks in store because I don't like to carry much cash with me and I only have a cc but it's not Amex so unless I bring cash I'm SOL but the few times I've went (met up friend/clients for tea..love the tea service) and also to get some stuff that only they carry..the service has been great. staff was attentive to my needs without hovering and overall if they accepted cc besides Amex I would frequent more often. though I don't mind buying offline its just they carry better selection in the store IMHO then online

They accept cheques as well. I know a lot of people actually who carry one or two cheques in their wallets at all times just in case they pop into NM. :p

NM's customer service is just like any store - hit or miss, because all sales associates aren't the same..

Truest statement in this entire thread.
