Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

Hello silkies! Sorry for the brief intermission. Personal life got in the way of my Hermes life. Unbelievable! Don't the people around me understand I need to dedicate time to Hermes and tPF? Haha.

OK, I was going to do a post on C'est la Fete since it is the only Halloween-ish scarf I have but it has been covered so beautifully by TangoTosca in her scarf circus thread so I decided to save it for another time. Also, we have seen tons of beautiful modeling shots recently in the grail thread too on C'est La Fete so let's cover something else today.

Today, I am going to talk about how a bag (yes you heard me right) can you drive you to insanity when making scarf purchasing decisions. How can this be? A bag doesn't even talk but for some reason, certain ones are just demanding! They want coordinating scarves, they want bracelets, they want shoes. So a bag that cost $XX dollars, turns out to actually cost $XX + $1,500 because of the additional coordinating accessories I have to buy to go with it. Please tell me this has happened to some of you too, not just me. I hope I'm not the only one that is nuts.

To be fair to this little scarf, I don't regret this purchase at all. I actually do like the scarf but the colors are so bright! It almost hurts my eyes. And this might be the only scarf in the world where you can wear a red shirt and carry an orange bag at the same time. But if I'm being honest with myself, the only reason I bought it was because I wanted something that would match my bag.

Well, seeing that it's Halloween this Sat in the U.S., this post is kind of on theme because the bag I'm talking about is an orange Picotin. This was my first Hermes bag ever. When I first started collecting scarves, I told myself I would not buy any bags because the price range was out of my comfort zone. But if you go to the boutique enough, the pesky bag case will eventually catch your eye. And of course, I eventually started asking about the prices of certain bags and when my SA told me the price of the Picotin, I thought, ok, I can handle that. It's still priced in a zone where I don't fell too much guilt. She asked me what color I wanted and I thought, why not a classic orange since it's going to be my one and only bag? (haha, little did I know I would eventually get a couple of kellys and evelynes) At the time, I thought cool, I have an orange bag! But then I realized...dum dum dum dum....I don't have any scarves with bright orange in the design to go with it. That realization launched me into a frenetic mode looking on eBay and in the boutique for scarves that had a little bit of orange but not too much orange. Because let's face it, I'm going to look horrible in a scarf that's completely bright orange. So after a couple of days (yes, days not weeks, see I'm not a very patient person) I spotted this scarf on eBay and thought aha! That's perfect. A little bit of orange to match my orange Pico but still has alot of other colors in it so my complexion does not turn a ghastly color.
So that my friends is the story of how you need to factor in the TRUE cost of a bag. It's not just the price of the bag itself, it's all the coordinating accessories you need to go with it. So if you buy a say Colvert bag...cough...cough....you know who you are...you are going to go on a mad hunt looking for scarves and other accessories that have that colvert blue in it too. :lolots:

Here's my scarf...Flots du Cheval...the one I only wear when I'm carrying my orange Pico. Lesson learned.

Wonderful story MYH. What you say is so very true, Hermès really gets you with the color coordinating thing...hence why I ended up with Clic C'est Noue scarf, simply because it went perfectly with my Blue Izmir Hapi bracelet!! Your Flots du Cheval really is lovely on you by the way, and all of the coordinating accessories...wow! Now I am off to eye the necklace...yikes, not another H rabbit hole!!!:faint:

Omg!!! So happy I am not the only one who goes crazy with coordinating bags with shawls and scarves and then going even more insane trying to coordinate my shawls with clic clacs [emoji23][emoji23]... Love listening to ur amazing stories!!! Really look forward to reading ur thread MYH!!! U give fab insights[emoji173]️[emoji173]️

I love your story--this has totally happened with me before as well, you're not the only one! :D That scarf is gorgeous--I agree with you, it's the perfect amount of orange and has great other colors in it as well. Nice choice! :smile1:

Thank you! I will show bags, shoes, accessories as I feature scarves. I'm glad you enjoyed the photo.

Thanks etoupebirkin for stopping by. Miss ya!

Hmm..is that an actual job? I would love to get paid for talking about scarves and showing people how to tie them.

Hello! Glad you're here.

Oh, it was hard for me too to buy just one cw. By the time this scarf came out, I was close to my scarf saturation point and felt guilty about buying multiple cws. Funny thing is when the CSGMs came out the next season, none of the cws worked for me. It was so bizarre!
And thank you for your sweet compliment about my elegant scarves. That is so very nice of you to say. But really, Hermes is great at making luxe looking items so it's really not hard to end up with several in a collection.

Greengoddess8 - Thanks for joining us! I'm glad you like the photos. I can't help but add in accessories when I take a scarf pic. It's all the items working together that really make me love Hermes.

A few other thoughts about this scarf - it's a good year-round scarf, can be worn in all seasons, and transitions easily from day to night. Depending on how I tie it, I can make it look casual or dressy. My go-to favorite knot for casual is a cowboy knot or some modification of that knot. My favorite dressy way to wear a scarf is a long necklace knot. But keep in mind I live in LA so dressy is a relative word.
I have been dying to get back online to your thread dear MYH!!!! I'm finally here again;) I never realized how functional this design really is MYH. Where did you learn the necklace knot. I love that look:graucho:
Rainneday - I had to chuckle when I read that you wanted me to post my first H scarf because it was a disaster! I was a total newbie. Swayed to purchase a design and cw the SA helping me recommended. I didn't know anything about which cws looked good for my complexion, which colors I gravitated towards, and really let a stranger that didn't know me well steer me towards purchasing a scarf I think she liked for herself. LOL. She said it looked fabulous on me, so I took her word for it. Argh! And the lighting inside that boutique did not help. It was like a dark cave. I thought ok, she's the professional, I'll go with what she says. Oy! That scarf has long since been rehomed. It was Geometrie Cretoise. In this cw. In fact, the 5 pod looking things in the middle reminded me of larvae or footballs and the left and bottom edge looked like collegiate stripes to me. The scarf also has way too much pink in it for my liking. So that was a huge lesson learned.

But tomorrow, I will show my second scarf I ever purchased which I have kept! That one went much better.
I think the first scarf is a hard one!!! My first two I over thought about it. And, I bought them online from a reseller. So, I didn't see the in person. I doubt I would have purchase either if I saw them in person first.
I am soooo enjoying this thread. Not enough threads are devoted to non-bag things and this is the best scarf one so far for me because you give insight into your MO which I find very interesting :yahoo:

Interesting to see how many scarves we have in common (bolded, twins on the DD Mawari) :ghi5: and how are collections differ. You also have about 10 scarves that could have bought if I hadn't of already purchased so many in the season - I still think about photo finish and in the cw.

I shall be back to read more
I totally agree with you papertiger! I LOVE MYH's non bag thread soooo much!
Some thoughts on the de la mer since I have it in a different colorway. It's a great scarf. One I constantly wear in the summer.

If I am going to bias fold it I generally do it in just the direction you show. Doing it the opposite way doesn't work as well because there is too much contrast on the two sides (less with mine than yours). If you triangle fold it you can definitely use three of the four corners. I find the fourth a bit challenging because depending on how you wear it you see upside down birds. In yours it is the coral corner. I would love to be able to use more of that coral. Have you been able to find a way to wear it to play up the coral?

Here is my blue vert mauve. Just for comparison. It is a more seasonal summer scarf than your colorway and I think reads more casual, whereas your colorway can go casual or dressy and seems more year round.

If you want us to hold off on comparisons until you finish let us know. I just thought the comparison would be interesting. But I don't want to interrupt your show.

Another gorgeous CW PBP. Thanks for sharing
Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I would never have been so brave to start this had it not been at the urging of Pocketbook Pup, Pirula, Klynneann, Greengoddess8, and Rainneday.
And Marietouchet - we are honored to have you join us! :worthy::worthy::worthy:
I am so thrilled you took our advise dear MYH!!!! I LOVE this thread!!!!!!
OK, let's move on to the 2nd H scarf I bought. I think after this, I'm going to skip around and not show scarves in chronological order. Because really, after my 3rd scarf, I have no idea which was my 4th. It all becomes a blur after #3 because I literally went off the deep end. Ok, back to the story. At this point, I was still a newbie. I just barely discovered purseforum and had no idea there were whole threads started by Uno each season that showed or described the scarves. This resource is priceless folks really. Because as a newbie, if you just walk up to the scarf counter and don't have an idea of what design you are looking for, it's totally overwhelming. I didn't even have in mind the color family I wanted. With an untrained eye, it's easy to buy a mistake (like what happened on my first visit).

Since we were living in Philly at the time and spending quite a few weekends up in NYC for fun. So about a month after I bought my first one, we were in NYC and I could not wait to hit the Madison Ave store. As soon as I walked in, I panicked. People everywhere, chaos, bored husbands, SAs rushing around, and a scarf counter with customers 4 people deep. I was not in Kansas anymore, well, more like King of Prussia. If any of you know or shop at that store, it is tiny. Usually empty, and the SAs there have plenty of time to unfurl each scarf and let me ponder and think about the pros and cons of it. But I refused to leave without a scarf. So I patiently waited my turn and finally, the line in front of me cleared and I could finally peer into the scarf case. Hmmm...still clueless. What did I want? What color family am I looking for? I didn't know and didn't have time to dawdle. There were more people in line behind me. So as I said, I'm drawn to geometric modern designs and I spied this scarf sitting all by itself (turns out it was the first to show up in the new season) and asked the SA to pull it out. It wasn't exactly love at first sight, but a strong like and I figured that was good enough. At this point, I was not as discerning as I am now with scarves. I liked the colors in it, the design, and with so much chaos, I asked her to box it up.

Now years later, I do really like this scarf. Because I kind of picked it on impulse, it does have a lemon yellow color in it that is not really my taste but I kind of like it for that reason. On the other hand, it has alot of grey and as you all will soon see, I love grey! Also, I can tie it so the strong teal and lemon yellow colors barely show and only the blue and gray shows. Or I can tie it and show all the colors. So really, it is very versatile. It's also a good year-round scarf and works both day and nighttime. So for an uneducated impulse buy, it worked out great.

And since I wear this scarf often with my Van Cleef 10 motif mother of pearl necklace, I decided to include it in my picture.

Love that this scarf story turned out so well. I am drooling over the H VCA combo :graucho:

Interesting organization , mine are arranged by color , I have a pink box , a purple box and so on , I owe my soul to the container store
Ps this will be an awesome reveal , I did not spy logo scarves - big h , small. Caleche and billions of chaines d ancre , just great designs
OH how I would love to see all your scarf boxes marietouchet:graucho: Perhaps we could convince you to do a thread on your items as well...PLEASE!!!
Moirai - the farandole necklace I have is neither a 120 or a 160. I didn't feel like I was tall enough to pull off either lengths, but the 80 was too short. So what I decided to do was to buy the 80 and also buy a farandole bracelet so that I could hook them together to make a 100 when I felt like it for the perfect length necklace, or break them apart and wear them separately as a necklace (in y shape) and a bracelet.

I hope this explanation wasn't too long and difficult to follow. And I would post a pic of my collection, but I'm not quite comfortable doing that on an open forum.
Perfect collection MYH!
Dhfwu - thanks for the suggestion! OK, I'll show my most sentimental one next. The reason this next one is sentimental is not because DH picked it out or because someone close to me bought it for me. I actually bought it for myself and it was love at first sight at the boutique. By now, my SA knew me pretty well but didn't actually think of showing it to me because she didn't think I would have any interest in the design. I only found it because I insisted one day on pawing through the drawers at the boutique on my own. I was at the point where my SA would just unlock the drawer, step aside and let me "have at it"! And even attend to other business if she had to. Yes, I was on a first name basis with all the SAs in the boutique and both the security guards. :shame: By now, I had already discovered the 140cms and loved them! So it wasn't like I was taking a leap with the larger size or anything. Also, for the record, I'm not an Astrological Sign person either. When people tell me they are a typical cancer or sagittarius, I kind of just look at them blankly because I have no idea what that means. I just like the design Astrologie Nouvelle because of the way it ties. Full disclosure, this is not the only one you are going to see. I also have another 140cm in another cw, a 90cm, a maxi-twilly, and would buy more if I saw a cw that captivated me. I love that the astrologie nouvelle scarves have designs that go all the way out to the hem and all mine have a contrast hem (except for the Maxi Twilly of course

The reason it's sentimental to me is because I almost always pack it with me when I travel. It has been my trusty companion on many a business and pleasure trip and has seen the world with me. It has protected me from sun, wind, cold, snow, everything. It adds color to my outfits without shouting "look at me" and matches practically my entire wardrobe. It is so soft from use, dry cleaning, and washing that it almost feels like suede. I think you can see this in my photo with my grey sweater. I love how it feels around my neck and makes me feel safe and warm immediately. I actually even spilled red nail polish on it once (a fairly large amount on the white part near the hem), and thought - ok that's it. Game over with this scarf - $800 down the drain and that's the end of my lovely scarf. But this scarf has 9 lives. I took it to a local dry cleaner and ALL the nail polish came out without any damage to the scarf. I have washed it myself with the laundress soap probably 5 times and the colors are still vibrant and make my heart sing. When I'm not sure what scarf to pair with my outfit, I always reach for it. I this scarf.

I have recently been looking more and more at this scarf design. It ties wonderfully p...and I love your CW. I live that it is your trusted companion! And, I'm so happy the nail polish came out. I would have fainted...
Hello silky darlings! I'm back. OK, today I want to feature a scarf that busted a fashion myth for me. I always thought wearing black and brown together in one outfit was a no-no. Either stick with all black or all brown right? Like, never wear brown pants with black shoes. Well, after I saw this scarf and saw how well brown and black go together, I'm over that old fashion rule. This scarf makes brown and black together look divine! It is so elegant and best of all, it has a bunch of lovely Hermes products on it. The border matches my gold kelly and has the cutest contrast stitching on the ribbon woven throughout the design and the border. It also plays an important role in my scarf collection as a neutral scarf. There are some days I want to wear a scarf for warmth or decoration but don't want one that attracts too much attention. Having a few neutrals in your collection is perfect for these instances. I know there are a lot of color lovers out there, but there is something to be said for a perfect neutral colorway scarf too.
Whenever I'm wearing a black sweater, I almost always pull this scarf out and am so happy I have it as part of my collection.
As a side note, this scarf is one of the few designs you can buy at the Madison Ave boutique and get letters or numbers embroidered on it. I chose to get my initials, but other good ideas the SA gave me was our wedding anniversary date (cause it has a monsieur and madame on it) or the date of a another special occasion. Since the scarf wasn't for my b-day or anything, I chose just to do my initials. At the time, the older astrology design was also another option for embroidery. I haven't been back to the boutique on Madison in a year or so and don't know if this design and the Astrology are still being offered? Maybe somebody can chime in here and let the rest of us know? There's a little glass display case to the left of the scarf counter that features the scarves and cws you can get this special service done. I hope it's still there. The embroidery customization is really a neat gift option to personalize the scarf. Sadly, you can't do it on any scarf they offer. Only the designs featured in the little glass display case.
And if you haven't guessed already, the scarf I'm talking about is Monsieur et Madame.

This is such a wonderful neutral CW. I love the way it ties, too::graucho: I have recently been trying to locate one of my neutral CW HG's but no luck yet;(. I realize that I am I need of more neutrals. When funds permit;). Love that Madison store monograms...who knew.
Oh how lovely!! [emoji7]

I've been doing black and brown for years! I'd completely forgotten there was a rule against it (or didn't care). Then again, I mix metals daily. So perhaps ignore me.

I love this scarf! I can totally see how it's a work horse "go to." How lovely that it's monogrammed! I never knew about the special glass case.

This is my new favorite thread; thanks so much! It makes Ban Island easier to bear. ][emoji8]
I'm a metal mixer to Pirula. And, yes I forgot about the brown/black rule, too. But, then I love to break fashion rules anyways:laugh:

GG thanks you for the request about mine BUT I am far too SHY for that , I just dont do mod shots

Everone has their little secrets here is mine ...

My mother & grandmother - very old style upper class English - knocked it into my head at an early age never to flaunt my HS, and I now have a mental block about showing off mine. I am also incapable of wearing an HS with the Hermes Paris showing - tres gauche LOL

But ask about specific designs in the GRAIL thread and maybe I will have something

This is MYH's thread and I love the stories of hers go girl

Stumbled upon this thread over my morning coffee and read with delight. As a new collector I would love to hear more about the purchases you later regretted as well as more about your all time favorites (I saw you mentioned a top 5). Can't wait to read more!!!

Sorry that I am so unfashionably late. I saw ur thread a wk ago and already it was so long. I had been waiting for a free period when I could read ur thread for hrs and thus I have been doing today.

Your love and enthusiasm shines thru in every word, every pic.
Your post on De La Mer was an eye-opener.

Love ur Kara necklace. I saw one in Sanguine lizard 2 wks ago. I must revisit it. I had my heart set on an Isidore necklace but the Kara was a lot of fun. Must. Think.

Hello silkies! I am so happy we have some newcomers here visiting! :welcome: And also want to welcome Marietouchet and Seton as our honored guests! :queen::worthy: I'm sure there isn't anything here that they have not seen before so I am flattered by their lovely comments.

Today's scarf selection is an interesting one! It's an oldie and was issued way before I started collecting. Of course I hunted it down in the reseller market because once I saw it, the image haunted me and just wouldn't leave me alone. So I hunted in the ebay forest and finally captured a 140cm mousseline, Le Monde est Vaste.

I like it for so many reasons. The cw is neutral but with a little bit of blue, it's an older issue mousseline and thus have a completely different "hand" than the recent ones, and in hot weather here I find the moussies quite useful. It kind of has the same striped look as Astrologie Nouvelle and I guess I am a sucker for stripes too.

But let me say a few things about moussies here. I was reluctant to start collecting these at first. First, the sticker shock! Other than CSGMs, they are the second most expensive scarf there is (except for the exceptional scarves with beading, etc.) and to my untrained eye at first, it was just a sheer piece of silk. In my head, I was thinking, should I really be paying so much for something decorative? How was this going to keep me warm especially since I was living in the Northeast at the time? And many moussies that I saw at the boutique were rather monochromatic in color. The design is there but it's very hard to see. But then I started to notice that there are moussies with lots of different colors (like both my point d'orgues) with designs that are very intricate. So I tried on some in the boutique and realized that many do have visible patterns and if you triple wind them around your neck, they can keep you warm! After bringing my first moussie home, I realized they are probably the most versatile of all the Hermes scarves. I can braid it, I can wear it cowboy, I can use it with a mors ring, I can intertwine it like a necklace, and best of all - the moussies give my outfit a casual look. And in my book, this is priceless. Because try as I might to make a 90cm look casual, sometimes it's hard. The sheen of the 90cm silk just screams out "luxury" and "look at me" and sometimes that just doesn't work with a normal t-shirt. The moussies aren't too shiny (unless we're talking changeant) and give off a casual vibe because of their material. And I actually have more moussies than CSGMs!

So in my head, the order of casual to dressy scarves looks something like this...

moussies < jersey pointus < gavroches < CSGMs < 90cm dip dyes <70cm < 140cm silk < Maxi Twillies < 90cm silk

And best of all, they are very durable. They look fragile because they are sheer, but really, I have had the least trouble with moussies and my silk twills. CSGMs are my worst nightmare! My engagement ring prong gets snagged on it 1 out of 4 times. Argh!

One more thought...like I said in one of my earlier posts, I think it's so important to have different sizes and materials when building a scarf collection. Different outfits truly are best suited for different scarves. So consider the moussies. They want a home too.

So enough talking, here are some pics!

Omg!!! Gorgeous MYH!! Love ur moussie collection especially the one u have on[emoji173]️[emoji173]️.... I am in the same boat as u were years ago when U first started collecting moussies...they r expensive, granted not as much as CSGMs that I am totally addicted to right now but still I am looking at cost per wear! Living on the east coast where the winter is a nightmare I am afraid that I will not be able to get much use out of them as I would with a CSGM. But God moussies r soooooo pretty!!! I am just itching to get my hands on one!!! Looking at ur beautiful collection I am so so tempted to give it a try[emoji173]️

Must. Think.

Hello sweetie! :smooch: I have missed you terribly. I was also MIA this summer (just too darned hot to wear scarves), which is why I became obsessed with horn necklaces. I have two colors of kara and am contemplating a third. They are so much impact for relatively little money (in H economics). I saw the Sanguine lizard one online and it looks super special. A piece of art. But if I had to pick between Isidore and Kara...ooh...that's a toughie. Get both - the kara is you know, rounding errors, when it comes to H. :roflmfao: Thanks for your kind words about my little thread.

Stumbled upon this thread over my morning coffee and read with delight. As a new collector I would love to hear more about the purchases you later regretted as well as more about your all time favorites (I saw you mentioned a top 5). Can't wait to read more!!!
Thank you for stopping by! I will share my regrets as I go through my collection. But sometimes, the stories are little embarrassing you know. :blushing:

GG thanks you for the request about mine BUT I am far too SHY for that , I just dont do mod shots

Everone has their little secrets here is mine ...

My mother & grandmother - very old style upper class English - knocked it into my head at an early age never to flaunt my HS, and I now have a mental block about showing off mine. I am also incapable of wearing an HS with the Hermes Paris showing - tres gauche LOL

But ask about specific designs in the GRAIL thread and maybe I will have something

This is MYH's thread and I love the stories of hers go girl
Thanks Marietouchet! I also try to make sure the Hermes wording doesn't show but am not always successful. But really, these silk squares are such beauties. If you're "in the know", then you just know.

what an amazing post thank you for sharing!
You're welcome. Glad you are enjoying the thread.

I love your story--this has totally happened with me before as well, you're not the only one! :D That scarf is gorgeous--I agree with you, it's the perfect amount of orange and has great other colors in it as well. Nice choice! :smile1:
Thank you! Orange is a tough color to wear and that scarf works nicely.

Oh good! another loon like me. I enjoy the company.

Greengoddess8 - looks like you are all caught up! Glad to have you back in the fold. ;)

Love this! It took me a while to get the whole thing with mousselines, too. I have one now and I'm looking forward to adding more in the spring. Any advice on choosing a mousseline as opposed to choosing a silk twill? What do you look for in a mousseline? I have seen some that look rather, well, dull. But maybe I should be trying them on before I decide that.

Very beautiful MYH; and I love all the different ways you tied it. I can see where moussies would be more casual, very interesting. I do believe that for me, these would absolutely need being seen in person at the boutique prior to purchase.
