Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

I was inspired MYH to update my Hermes spreadsheet. I am such a nerd and keep one for insurance purposes as I learned the hard way after my apartment was burglarized that not having lists, images, and receipts makes dealing with insurance that much more of a nightmare that it usually is.

Anyway, I haven't updated it in over a year and oh dear, I haven't realized how many scarves I have. Did they multiply when I wasn't looking? Is someone feeding them after midnight?

Grand Total: 77. Mainly 90s and 140s. Of that 77, only about 6 are on the chopping block--just haven't gotten around to it. So obviously, I might want to consider culling some additional scarves. If I wore every scarf 5 times, that would take me about a year. But not all scarves are equal--CSGMs getting lots of use in the winter while the 90, 70, and moussies get use in the summer. There's also some that I love but never wear, how many of those get a free pass to the next round? I did not buy anything this past season but the spring scarves are calling me, especially Jardin de Maharani CSGMs. What to do?

.....
Sounds roughly my situation - apart from the fact that at least ten should go because they are too bright for me. But, how to get rid of them - never sold anything on Ebay and dread the hassle, much easier to let them go to the bottom of my silky heap, I suppose. And, note to self and lesson learned - be more careful when scrutinizing colours on the net, not getting carried away believing something is pale blue when it is annoyingly turqoise :-)

If I could grow my money tree I would own every "annoyingly turquoise" scarf I could find!:biggrin::biggrin:

eliwon, I have the same issue, the hassle of selling them just relegates the unworn to the bottom of the pile! One day I will get around to shipping them off to a reseller.
Lessons learned: I don't need another pink scarf, and no more duplicates in the same size. Possibly no more duplicates in another size, but my excuse is that 90 and 140 tie so differently!

A quick enabling note: both colorways of the cheval Phoenix 140 silk that myh and I purchased are now on the US website.

That being said: I have found that the process of deciding to rehome a few of my scarves that don't work for me is a good learning experience and makes me evaluate my choices more critically before I purchase. It's much easier to not buy something or even to return it for credit if I get it home and find it doesn't work with my wardrobe than to try to sell later. My "to try" list for spring has dwindled from 30 possibilities to 6.

I am one week into the spreadsheet experiment. I'm also trying to step up my game and wear a great outfit everyday with the pieces that I have rather than always reaching for the same tired things and even saving the best pieces in my wardrobe for special occasions. (Does anyone else do that? It's so silly of me. [emoji849]) So I'm not forcing myself to wear any of my scarves. I'm picking an outfit, then deciding which scarf goes or whether it's better without a scarf at all. [emoji33] I know. The horror. So far so good. I was happy with my outfits this week. I ended up wearing several different csgm shawls, a silk 140 and no scarf one day.

You are so hard on yourself! Glad to hear that you did well this week.. And congrats on narrowing down the wishlist for the current season!!
SOTD thread makes me reach for things I might not have thought of, but I still have too many scarves. My latest trick: when putting a scarf away at night, it goes into the "This is an amazing scarf and I looked fantastic in it" or the "other" pile.

Momasaurus, I really enjoyed SOTD for a while. I learned a lot about scarves and it helped me to experiment with different designs to see what worked for me. It also led to me want a gazillion scarves. [emoji23]

I'm sure yours all look amazing on you.

Yes, well, there's the danger of wanting everyone's scarves. i am *trying* to be better about that. This thread doesn't help, either, because @MYH makes everything look fabulous in pix with all her bracelets and charms. Then I want those bracelets and charms too.

Congrats pbp on showing some restraint with regard to SS2017! I am also trying to be a bit more particular on what I pick for scarves and shawls these days. Having said that, I'm afraid I have been eyeing the two Cheval Phoenix 140 silks on the website now. IF if were to get one, I am not sure whether to go with the brick red or the blue CW, both of which you and MYH own. What is tricky is that online the blue CW looks like the contrast hem and the large Cheval field edge is navy and white, but in MYH's photos these appear to be black. I would prefer a black contrast hem and black and white on the edge of the Cheval side, can you or @MYH weight in on the true color? As you know I also wear a lot of black, so not sure which of the two CW's would be best for that? Many thanks in advance. :hugs:

Hi Bova - the two edges on the Cheval side are indeed black and white. Not navy and white. Go for it!

Enjoying this discussion! Here I am with my geometrie cretoise. doing the touchdown dance. I love it for precisely the reasons you don't...the footballs and collegiate stripes! (Though not the larvae). Not my school colors but the colors in this are luscious.

Happy new year!

P.S. I commend you on your wear-tracking MYH. It's a good idea but I am too chicken to see how many just lay in repose.

Ok, well you make this scarf looks fabulous. Yes, it also invoked a collegiate stripes kind of feeling in me (hence I jumped to footballs lol). I hope I did not ruin this scarf for you with my talk of larvae. Very sorry.

View attachment 3565037 Well now that I look closer, those things in the green color block do look like larvae..oh.

Oh dear. You have the same scarf addiction we have. I concur with you. They must have been mating at night when you weren't looking. I LOLed about your comment about calling BS on yourself. But you should applaud yourself for not buying any this past season. That is quite an achievement.

Rereading my post, I am calling BS on myself. I have been buying scarves from resellers, and not from the boutique. Scarf/shopping amnesia anymore?

.....

Hi Eliwon- I think the trick with eBay is to figure out a price you would be willing to part with the scarf and just list it as a Buy It Now instead of an auction. That way you don't need to wait and check and when someone buys your scarf, just ship it off. Also, if it makes you feel more comfortable, be strict about the countries you will ship too.

If I could grow my money tree I would own every "annoyingly turquoise" scarf I could find!:biggrin::biggrin:
Cute HHope!! We know you all love your blues.

OK, week one is complete and I've only worn 2 scarves. I'm not doing well. Argh. You on the other hand seem to be excelling at this challenge! I'm very much like you in that I have like 20 possibles at the beginning of the season and for some reason, it does dwindle to just a couple. And then there is always one that was never on my radar that surprises me and that's an emotional impulse buy which I let myself do.

Yes, well, there's the danger of wanting everyone's scarves. i am *trying* to be better about that. This thread doesn't help, either, because @MYH makes everything look fabulous in pix with all her bracelets and charms. Then I want those bracelets and charms too.
I'm am blushing over here at your kind compliment. Thank you momasaurus.

Bova, I see that myh has answered. It is either black or so dark a navy to be indistinguishable from black. I think you will like this color the best. I don't think the red colorway will go as well with black. I see it more with camel or navy.

Addition: I saw your note about the hem. It is not black. It's yet another shade of dark blue. But I still think this color will look great with black.

Oh no!! We could have met up for a drink together! :drinks:

Seriously, we've joked about it before but we need like a secret identifier to use on our bags or clothes to self-identify as tpf members. That way we can meet in person.

I see tPF members all the time at H-parties and fashion shows, I can recognise them by their bag/shawl/bracelet/+ combo almost instantly. Apart from those I've met at tPF official meets already and/or who have become friends and greet accordingly, I feel I should respect their anonymity. I like the idea of a code , then it's like a signal of 'it's OK to approach'.

Thank you sooooo much MYH and Pocketbook pup! I think I will go for it, as I have been thinking about it for a long time now. I was really deliberating between this one and the bright pink CW, but ultimately I believe the blue CW will work better with my black tops/sweaters. Like you both, I am trying harder to be sure that what I purchase really works well with my wardrobe and lifestyle. Also trying very hard to whittle down my SS2017 wish list before I run headlong into the new season! Thanks again dear silky friends :flowers:

Hello Simbacat! Oh my! You read the whole thread?!?! That's dedication. Thanks for letting me know you are enjoying it. I am going to try to continue it at a more steady pace this year although I am going to run out of scarves eventually.

Vintage is so cool...I know you are in the same boat as me. Although I do buy new too. Who am I kidding....I am an equal opportunity buyer. The design just has to captivate me.

Please try Cheval Phoenix...I think it would look spectacular on you.

It's very Marie Kondo of us!! Only buy what brings us JOY!!! H items totally fit the bill. :hugs:
I am learning so much from this thread and a few others I have happened upon over the past few months. Thanks to MYH for starting (and keeping up) and to all who post/discuss their finds. It is always a good day when I can sit down and unwind with these beautiful pictures and the wonderful participants here. Thank you all again. I look forward to spending more time with you!
