Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

All very justifiable and logical reasons!! Ahh very pretty and yes similar with the lines to CI. I love how the colors matches your malachite Kelly. I probably saw you or passed you by without realizing it was you at the Vegas boutiques. Congrats with your new shawl! And congrats to your younger sis with her new etain evie!
Oh no!! We could have met up for a drink together! :drinks:

Seriously, we've joked about it before but we need like a secret identifier to use on our bags or clothes to self-identify as tpf members. That way we can meet in person.

Perhaps another chance time! .
Lol. Agreed on that secret identifier. Can't have myself whispering TPF sister/ TPFer to everyone in the boutique.... the SAs would look at me funny.:giggle::p:angel::biggrin:

Hi there, just discovered this glorious thread, what a treat, I am in heaven! Am luxuriating in reading it through from the start. Am laughing about your first scarf Geometries Cretoises, as that was one I had (maybe I bought your rehomed one??) and it did not work for me either, I always thought those things looked like American footballs too [emoji458] Anyway, thank you so much for sharing all your scarves and your scarf wisdom [emoji253][emoji253]

LOL. Perhaps you did! I rehomed mine about 2 years ago I believe. Looks like we keep passing the football around but no one is doing the touchdown dance with it. Thanks for stopping by and letting me know you are enjoying the thread. I've always adored the sense of humor in your posts.

It's a New Year's miracle. I didn't wake up with a headache (ahem....hangover....cough) this year. In fact, I only had a couple of drinks around 5pm with friends and we called it an early night. Happy New Year to all of you! :hbeat: May 2017 be filled with happiness, good health, and lots of H goodies! :love:And I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for keeping me company on this thread. It wouldn't be as much fun without all the fun sharing, banter and chatter.

So thanks to my extraordinary restraint on adult beverages yesterday, I am fresh and alert to tackle 2017 with my resolutions. So I thought I would share my scarf resolution with all of you. Maybe some of you even want to join in the fun? I know PbP is also in! Anyone else? Oh, you want to know what we are doing before committing yourself? OK, fine. :blah:

I know some others have already done this but this will be my first year. And I am sooo excited to see the results! I'm going to keep track of how many times I wear each of my scarves on an excel spreadsheet. Those that don't get worn X number of times (have not decided the cutoff number yet) will need to be rehomed. I'm trying to only keep scarves I actually wear in my closet. But PbP and I think we should get 3 reserve spots for scarves we don't wear but love. OK who's in???? Let's do this!! It's the perfect time to start this experiment.

Alrighty - what should be the minimum number of times a scarf needs to be worn in a year before it gets rehomed? I think holiday scarves are the exception. I can't possibly go running around with Noel au 24 Faubourg in July. I was thinking 5 times. Is that too few? Should it be 10 times? 10 seems too many. I dunno. So confused. What do you all think? Well, I don't need to figure that out right now. Maybe once I finish the experiment, it will be evident what that number is.

So here's a peek at Page 1 of my excel spreadsheet. Scarves are organized by category (scarf format) and then within each category they are in alphabetical order. I also decided to make columns for Jan-Dec out of curiosity to see if certain scarf formats or colors get more wear in certain months. 70s, Maxi Twillies, and Misc formats are on Page 2. I've printed out the spreadsheet and will leave it in one of my closet drawers and put a tick mark every time I wear a scarf. I think running to the computer after putting on a scarf is too much trouble. I'm going old school with paper and pen.

Not only am I interested to see how many times each scarf gets worn, I'm also curious to see how many times each scarf format gets worn. So I know which format to buy more of in the future. Did I mention I'm so excited!! :yahoo:This is my inner geek coming out...

I've also decided I'm not going to force myself to wear any scarf in particular to save it from the chopping block. The natural order when I get dressed is usually clothes first, then bag, then scarf. Sometimes, if the outing is specific, it's bag first, then clothes, then scarf. But scarf is always last. So I will keep it last. Scarf wearing in it's purest form (PbP's words).

Let the scarf games begin! Are you going to participate with your own collection? Come on! It will be fun. It only took me about 20 min to type out all the scarves in the spreadsheet so don't feel like that part is daunting. We will all report back at the end of the year. I will probably do a mid-year update as well.

On point new year resolutions dear MYH! I love the idea of putting the shawls I have on a spreadsheet and tracking to see how many times I wear each! I don't own any 90's, only 1 140 silk and some CSGM.... But this exercise may very well prevent me from buying unnecessary shawls... I wear my shawls everyday and to death [emoji51]... That's how I justify buying them... One of my amazing friends has a rationale that I use shamelessly now- according to her the more you use something, the cost per wear goes down .... But I can do it only if I have a manageable number... So I am trying to be good and not hoard like I want to every time I see enabling pics on tpf or visit my store... For me my resolve this year is going to be more on showing restraint and buying only a couple to keep down my shawl numbers...[emoji1317][emoji1317]

Actually the hardest part is getting the photo of each item entered. I started with my scarves because that was what I was most interested in. It is better if you find a pic of an item when you buy it. Then since it was summer, I entered the summer clothes. I still don't have most of my coats entered, but I don't care about that.
At first I put things into outfits and then on the calendar, but now I just go to the calendar and add the individual clothing items I wore that day. Since at the calendar at a glance you just see the first item, either add the scarf first, or resort the items later. Here is December at a glance. Blank days were days I just hung around in lounge clothes.View attachment 3562695

So here is the screen for entering what I wore on a day. In this case, I have not entered into the DB the pants I wore, so it looks like I am missing a bottom. I think it depends what you want to track. I have lots of jewelry but actually I have only entered my H items in the database.View attachment 3562723
Wow! The neat freak and organizer in me is doing a happy dance looking at your spectacular database [emoji126][emoji126]... Terrific idea scarf1!

At this rate, I'm never going to finish this thread because I keep acquiring scarves. :panic:

I spent Christmas in Vegas this year and of course, another scarf followed me home. There are 3 H boutiques in Vegas so really, I didn't have a fighting chance. In fact, I had no chance. Zero. Zilch. Nada. You are going to think I'm nuts. The SS2017 scarves are rolling in and what do I do? I decide to backpedal to SS2016 because I realized I missed one. I glossed over it because it looks like a quilt when flat and I didn't think it looked "modern" enough. But I was SO wrong. When this cashmere shawl is tied, it is super modern looking and the quilt disappears. Yup! You guessed it....Patchwork Horse Cashmere was calling my name. Do you remember I mentioned early on that I love the design Coupons Indiens? Well, when tied, this scarf is a dead ringer (almost) for CI. So when the shawl drawer opened, my eyes went straight to it. And it just so happened, I had brought my malachite kelly along on this trip and it is a perfect match. Just so you can see how I can easily justify buying more scarves, I came up wit 15 reasons why I had to have it and could probably have come up with 5 more reasons if DH had poured me another glass of wine. In my defense, I wrote this list last night and not this morning. No I am not nuts enough to drink wine in the morning. :giggle:

15 Reasons I had to Get this Patchwork Horse 140cm Cashmere Shawl
1. It was freezing in Vegas and I didn't pack a cashmere shawl so needed one to stay warm
2. I took my malachite kelly on the trip and only had silk 90cms to coordinate with it
3. I want to move my malachite kelly out of the 'occasional use' category and into the regular rotation category so need more scarves to match
4. My SA spent so much time showing me the new SS2017 scarves but nothing wowed me and I didn't want to suck up all her time without a sale
5. I don't have any 140 cashmere shawls that are remotely this color and it would fill a nice void in that format
6. It looks kind of like coupons indiens (one of my fav designs) when tied
7. I needed a Vegas Christmas 2016 souvenir
8. 140cm scarves are my favorite size
9. I already have lots of accessories to match it
10. I already have a lot of tops/sweaters to match it
11. The weather forecast in LA shows we are having cashmere shawl weather for (at least) the next 2 weeks
12. I have another bag (blue indigo Pico) that matches it and could argue that Gris T and Gold also match it
13. I love the little mosaic tiles in it  Reminds me of water shimmering in a swimming pool
14. I might be moving to a colder climate soon and need more cashmeres
15. I think #3 (see above) should count again

So there were lots of new SS2017 scarves already in and I tried on all of them!! And couldn't find one that knocked my socks off. I think I'm just not a springy colored gal. Pastels don't really work for me and although there were a ton of grey/yellow scarves in, both my SA and little sis made frowny faces when I tried them on. Little sis also did pretty well this trip. She finally got her first H bag (a TPM etain evelyne with cuivre strap) and a black box kelly dog bracelet in ghw. I am so happy for her and happy for me because she won't ask to borrow my bags anymore. Hooray!! :yahoo:

Without further ado - some pretty pictures. I hope I have solved my problem of huge pics. Fingers crossed this works!!

Exhibit A - Patchwork Horse and Coupons Indiens side-by-side. See the similarity?

Enjoying this discussion! Here I am with my geometrie cretoise. doing the touchdown dance. I love it for precisely the reasons you don't...the footballs and collegiate stripes! (Though not the larvae). Not my school colors but the colors in this are luscious.

Happy new year!

P.S. I commend you on your wear-tracking MYH. It's a good idea but I am too chicken to see how many just lay in repose.

This topic of wardrobe technology is very interestng. Thank you all for sharing the apps and ideas.

At present I only have a very simple use of technology, but have found it useful.

I take photos of all my scarves while wearing them and save them on my ohone in a folder just for scarves. Then, if I am out shopping or online shopping, I can take my phone and see if I have a scarf to match the outfit or bag I am craving. I can also quickly see if I have a scarf "too similar" to one that is temping me.

I do the same thing! Sometimes I'll even add a photo of a scarf that I'm thinking of buying to decide if it's too similar to what I already have. It has saved me from several purchases.

I was inspired MYH to update my Hermes spreadsheet. I am such a nerd and keep one for insurance purposes as I learned the hard way after my apartment was burglarized that not having lists, images, and receipts makes dealing with insurance that much more of a nightmare that it usually is.

Anyway, I haven't updated it in over a year and oh dear, I haven't realized how many scarves I have. Did they multiply when I wasn't looking? Is someone feeding them after midnight?

Grand Total: 77. Mainly 90s and 140s. Of that 77, only about 6 are on the chopping block--just haven't gotten around to it. So obviously, I might want to consider culling some additional scarves. If I wore every scarf 5 times, that would take me about a year. But not all scarves are equal--CSGMs getting lots of use in the winter while the 90, 70, and moussies get use in the summer. There's also some that I love but never wear, how many of those get a free pass to the next round? I did not buy anything this past season but the spring scarves are calling me, especially Jardin de Maharani CSGMs. What to do?
