Agh! I so want to use Stylebook but they're only for Apple items and I'm an Android user.Excellent idea. Actually this summer I had a similar idea but decided to use Stylebook which allows me to keep track of clothing also. At any rate, I started this in late July. I can do the tracking part, no problem.
The releasing scarves that have not been worn xx times, that is harder for me! I think xx is a smaller number than 5 for me!
It's a New Year's miracle. I didn't wake up with a headache (ahem....hangover....cough) this year. In fact, I only had a couple of drinks around 5pm with friends and we called it an early night. Happy New Year to all of you!May 2017 be filled with happiness, good health, and lots of H goodies!
And I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for keeping me company on this thread. It wouldn't be as much fun without all the fun sharing, banter and chatter.
So thanks to my extraordinary restraint on adult beverages yesterday, I am fresh and alert to tackle 2017 with my resolutions. So I thought I would share my scarf resolution with all of you. Maybe some of you even want to join in the fun? I know PbP is also in! Anyone else? Oh, you want to know what we are doing before committing yourself? OK, fine.
I know some others have already done this but this will be my first year. And I am sooo excited to see the results! I'm going to keep track of how many times I wear each of my scarves on an excel spreadsheet. Those that don't get worn X number of times (have not decided the cutoff number yet) will need to be rehomed. I'm trying to only keep scarves I actually wear in my closet. But PbP and I think we should get 3 reserve spots for scarves we don't wear but love. OK who's in???? Let's do this!! It's the perfect time to start this experiment.
Alrighty - what should be the minimum number of times a scarf needs to be worn in a year before it gets rehomed? I think holiday scarves are the exception. I can't possibly go running around with Noel au 24 Faubourg in July. I was thinking 5 times. Is that too few? Should it be 10 times? 10 seems too many. I dunno. So confused. What do you all think? Well, I don't need to figure that out right now. Maybe once I finish the experiment, it will be evident what that number is.
So here's a peek at Page 1 of my excel spreadsheet. Scarves are organized by category (scarf format) and then within each category they are in alphabetical order. I also decided to make columns for Jan-Dec out of curiosity to see if certain scarf formats or colors get more wear in certain months. 70s, Maxi Twillies, and Misc formats are on Page 2. I've printed out the spreadsheet and will leave it in one of my closet drawers and put a tick mark every time I wear a scarf. I think running to the computer after putting on a scarf is too much trouble. I'm going old school with paper and pen.
Not only am I interested to see how many times each scarf gets worn, I'm also curious to see how many times each scarf format gets worn. So I know which format to buy more of in the future. Did I mention I'm so excited!!This is my inner geek coming out...
I've also decided I'm not going to force myself to wear any scarf in particular to save it from the chopping block. The natural order when I get dressed is usually clothes first, then bag, then scarf. Sometimes, if the outing is specific, it's bag first, then clothes, then scarf. But scarf is always last. So I will keep it last. Scarf wearing in it's purest form (PbP's words).
Let the scarf games begin! Are you going to participate with your own collection? Come on! It will be fun. It only took me about 20 min to type out all the scarves in the spreadsheet so don't feel like that part is daunting. We will all report back at the end of the year. I will probably do a mid-year update as well.

I use another closet app, and to be honest, after the initial excitement and uploading of items, I use it to track sizes and wear notes. Eg hosiery and undergarments sizing/styles.
And also for all the bits and pieces that go into a special outfit- eg a formal dress, which undergarments, shoes jewelry. For daily use I found it a bit tedious but I might pick it up again.
My app is called Closet and it doesn't do the white background collection that style book allows.
I have tried closet too. It's much less time consuming than style book but less effective in gathering statistics about individual items. I was to lazy to keep up with it too.
I saw a post on Instagram that suggested turning your hangars backward at the beginning of the year and putting them back correctly after something was worn. Anything still backward at the end f the year clearly hadn't been worn. Unfortunately my closet is so bursting at the seams that I doubt I could do it, and what about all the drawers etc? [emoji51]
I am so afraid to get rid of things because I might need them for an outfit on the future. So I am constantly making passes through my closet to see what I might do without. [emoji20]
Lol what a coincidence. I am taking a break from cleaning my closet and I just purchased stylebook on my iPad. I'm slowly taking photos. Mostly of the clothes I don't usually wear and placing them back into my closet. It is definitely a time consuming process. I may have to catalog a section at a time. Ohhh I'm looking forward to cataloging my scarves into this app. I won't be rehoming any scarves but will cheer on from the sideline. Looking forward to your journey
AngelFood - this is a dilemma we all face. Generally - you will take a bit of a loss when rehoming an item unless it's a grail. Although a necessary evil, I do think most of us use eBay. I've also hear people having success with theRealReal, Fashiophile, and other online consignment boutiques. Do you have any friends that are also into designer items? Perhaps set up a "Designer Trade" party? That way you feel like your friend now has your precious scarf and is taking care of it and you might even get to see it from time to time.It is always interesting to read about and see all of your H treasures. Without using a spreadsheet I know that I have accumulated far too many myself. You have mentioned that you will probably rehome some that are not worn frequently enough. I was hoping you or some of the lovely TPFers can talk about the best way to do this. Do you strictly use EBay or is there a better way to pare down. Having many with tags on lets me know that there are plenty that aren't getting enough wear. And a new season is just beginning! Yikes!
Darling - your writing makes me laugh out loud. I could not use LOL there because it doesn't express how witty you are. Anti-Kondo!!!Wow, what an interesting experiment, myh! And I've not heard of stylebook or closet - they seem very cool, too. I will avidly watch on the sidelines and cheer you guys on! I myself am still in the every-scarf-is-a-delicate-snowflake-that-must-be-treasured-and-hoarded mode. I am not ready to let anything go. I am the Anti-Kondo.
Expatwife - I hear you on needing more than 365 days!! Happy New Year to you as well.Happy New Year, friends!
What a great idea to track the scarf wear. I'm not sure I'll be getting rid of any, but it would help put more thought into outfits.
I'd love to do stylebook, especially to track my clothes.
I have so many resolutions for 2017, I might need more than 365 days [emoji15].
Good luck everyone!
Old school darling - we can make it work!! And I didn't know life was so tough for Android users.Agh! I so want to use Stylebook but they're only for Apple items and I'm an Android user.I think I'm in on this the old fashioned way, as @MYH suggests - pen and paper! I'd really love to do a few other high ticket items too (just to make myself feel a little better lol).
Lanit - I totally understand your sentiment about particular designs. I fear that when the end of the year comes, my allotment for 3 scarves to keep even though I don't wear is going to increase to 10! I'm all talk now but don't know if I'm really going to be able to part with some. And congrats on paring down your bag collection!Omg, what an amazing new year resolution MYH. I recently did a mini bag review and edit by simply taking photos of my bag collection, then deciding what bags I am reaching for vs. languishing and if I could pare down to ten bags. With scarves my edits are much more on a whim. It comes down to the ones I no longer feel suit my wardrobe or personal style. Some designs or colorways feel dated to me. There are simply days I don't want to wear silk at all and prefer a minimal look with jewelry or horn pieces. I will be very curious to watch your progress and others! I love some of my silks for sheer artistry, and that does not deter my appreciation for a particular design. Those are the special design silks that bring a different type of joyful satisfaction, so I guess that makes me a collector for sure.
Great idea and let's see it roll!
