So why do people want to buy made in France Chanel items over the ones made in Italy or Spain? I don't see the difference!
Well, I do not about Chanel in particular but I do know that the stories of Chinese factories in Prato exploiting workers is true. It's really upsetting, actually. So many people think that by buying "luxury" brands they're not supporting sweatshops when they really are.

its illegal in Europe to claim its made there but made in China. only thing that could be possible is that they make hardwear in China/color leather/&etc...
That's only partly right. EU customs law says that certain products - like textiles which are what purses are made from - have to be finished in whatever country the "made in ..." tag claims the product was made. The EU allows this for a vast number of products and they call it "non-preferential origin" when two or more countries are involved in a product's manufacture
http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_custom...es_origin/non-preferential/article_410_en.htm
Articles 24 CC states: "Goods whose production involved more than one country shall be deemed to originate in the country where they underwent their last, substantial, economically justified processing or working in an undertaking equipped for that purpose and resulting in the manufacture of a new product or representing an important stage of manufacture".
It's not just Chanel and it's not just limited to the textile industry either
I agree, we live in a very greedy world. Why are we paying so much for bags (and for other luxury items) that cost relatively little to manufacture?
'Hand made' has nothing to do with where the supplies came from. If parts were assembled by hand, the item is 'hand made'.What about Dior and Hermes? I thought they were hand made. Is that a lie too?!![]()
From the point of view of a marketing major, it's us consumers that allow Chanel and all other high-end brands to continue ridiculously jacking up the prices for cheaply made bags because we CONTINUE to buy them. We can not be naive and say that these bags are all hand-made in France/Italy because it simply is not true. They are a business and as any business would do, they will find any way possible to increase their profit margin if customers are still purchasing and the demand is high.
Realistically, all of us are not paying $6000+ for a bag just because it's "great quality" because you definitely can get "great quality" bags for 1/50 of the price. We are paying these prices for the BRANDING, and Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld has done darn well with their branding for women to want to continue buying these bags for the amount of car down payments. You will never get them to stop the ridiculous price increases on their cheaply-made products unless we stop buying from Chanel...but will that really happen?![]()
If Chanel does outsource to China, it also explains all the super fakes that are being produced there. I hate to think the double C logo means Chanel China.![]()
Marketing ( print, run way, Hollywood bag give aways , web site etc.) is added to the end bag cost and Chanel has a hefty budget. Plus SA's have significant " at risk" compensation, so when you allocate all expenses back to cost of goods than add profit you have a costly good ...
