My professor told me Chanel bags are all made in China but assembled in Europe?

I'm also going to suggest reading "Deluxe" by Dana Thomas. Very eye-opening. Though she doesn't "name names" past a certain point, she alludes to the fact that luxury houses that we would not expect are outsourcing much of their assembly to China at this point.

Sad but true.

The question now is... Do you still want to buy Chanel from now on?

I just got a GST and was planning to get a jumbo, but my chanel mood has now been turned down.

I think the more fair question is do you want to buy any luxury handbag anymore or to refine your current collection? This isn't a Chanel specific issue

I still love purses even though I don't love labor outsourcing

It is sad to hear this fact. Truth hurts!:shucks:

Apart from the hardwares that Chanel uses these days for the bags, Does anyone know where does Chanel assemble Chanel Classic flap bags (like maxi, jumbo, m/l) and Reissue 2.55 (like 225, 226, 227)??

It's a struggle. I love how beautiful designer bags are. But part of me wants to take their random, unjustified price increases, declining quality, and mass produced China goods and chuck it back at their faces. There are 100% American sourced and made bags out there (Beggar's Pouch). But then I'm in the place in my life where I have a healthy amount of discretionary income, and I like pretty things. So I buy jewelry?... probably made at least in part in China, and the mining practices for the materials are abhorrent. Furniture?... lots of it is made in China and my Mennonite made stuff isn't holding up great. Shoes?... China. Clothes?... China. At every price point just about everything is made in China, so the only choice I feel I have left is to do what makes me happy, which is why I still buy.

Tutu, this is exactly what I can't understand. Personally I don't see the difference but have seen ppl pretty adamant about getting "made in France" Chanel!

There is no difference. They just have different places where the stamp of "made in" is applied. I think it's just a psychological thing of, "Chanel must be made in France as that's where Coco Chanel had her business."

No..I will not buy any chanel products anytime soon..
I can't erase my love for Chanel but I can try to stop buying.
I don't spent my hardwork money for a big lie

from the point of view of a marketing major, it's us consumers that allow chanel and all other high-end brands to continue ridiculously jacking up the prices for cheaply made bags because we continue to buy them. We can not be naive and say that these bags are all hand-made in france/italy because it simply is not true. They are a business and as any business would do, they will find any way possible to increase their profit margin if customers are still purchasing and the demand is high.
Realistically, all of us are not paying $6000+ for a bag just because it's "great quality" because you definitely can get "great quality" bags for 1/50 of the price. We are paying these prices for the branding, and chanel and karl lagerfeld has done darn well with their branding for women to want to continue buying these bags for the amount of car down payments. You will never get them to stop the ridiculous price increases on their cheaply-made products unless we stop buying from chanel...but will that really happen? :p

It's fairly common practice not just in handbags, but also in apparels....materials and a % of the product is made in countries other than, say, Italy, and they get shipped to Italy for final processes which can sometimes just be sewing on a leather stamp. It's been like this for a long time. We'd all be in denial if we think we're not at least a little bit just 'paying for the brand' when we drop $5K on a bag that's not 100% handcrafted. Even then, as in the case with H, we're still paying a premium for it being H. Serviceability is important, you can spend less than $200 last I check, to get a Chanel bag completely refurbished at the boutique...we pay for the brand and everything that comes after you have already bought the bag.

I think they are convinced somehow it will be better or something, kinda like people who insist on new-from-the-back are frequently the type to use their bag then exchange it. Neither makes sense to me, but there is a large contingent of both.

Personally I'm about done with Chanel bags; the tipping point has been more than reached and the quality issues are becoming too frequent to ignore. Add in all the marketing huha trying to justify the lies and the games at the boutiques and you get a no longer enjoyable experience.

You've not checked in for a long time; it's now over $600 for that refurbishment, and just FYI Hermes is also affected by the Chinese labor & materials "trade." Many people have not been very happy at the way they have been treated by the "everything that comes after" the sale. Just start reading the threads and you'll see a lot of evidence of that. Dior never charges to put soles on my shoes or to tune up my watch; Chanel charges for both and they take 3x as long. Go figure. Chanel really doesn't do much for you after they have your money.
