My opinion of Hermes is changing...

Should the Evelyne be added to #5? I know that it is not one of the most "coveted" & hard to get H bags, but it is extremely popular. I see more of that style than any other while out and about.

I like this list ^ and agree with it. I must be one of the rare people who prefers the Bolide 31 to the Kelly 32 (& Kelly sellier was my dream bag for quite some time), the Bolide 31, however, is more flattering on me. Hopefully the B (30) will also compliment my shape and height...;) Can we also agree that Hermes offers the most varied styles, leathers and colors? I can't think of another high-end brand that offers so many choices.

I like the Picotin
It is one of the more reasonable bags Hermes offers.
I receive compliments when I wear mine. They admire the style & never ask the designer.
Not all Hermes offerings are outrageously priced.
I have to think part of their strength are "under the radar" goods (shoes, housewares too)

Yes absolutely. I love that some people love the bolide and some prefer a Kelly. And some an Evelyn. And we do have a lot of choices. But I'm spoiled. I still want more nice shoulder bags. Pout.

I will post my little story here, and if mods find it not to topic they can remove.
I remember being around 19 years old (I am 40 now) and going into H and asking if they had any Kelly bags that I could try on :p I worked in fashion for much of my life & so I had been exposed to Hermes in that way. I did not have the budget for a Kelly when I was 19 years old, but I did appreciate their beauty.

Many years passed and I did not have the time to think about Hermes, I was crazy busy building my family and going through the various changes that can occur when you are in your late twenties/early thirties. For a few reasons things began to slow down (and finances began to look up) in the last few years, and Hermes became a brand that was once again on my radar.

The sole reason that I visited my local H was to procure a specific style of bracelet in the color Blue Izmir. The very first SA who approached me--and has since become a dear friend--went above and beyond to find this bracelet for me and had it transferred in or sent to my home, I can't remember now.

You could say that this changed my opinion of Hermes. It brought the brand from being something intimidating and unattainable over to my side of the room, it was back-on-the-table, so to speak.

After being introduced to the shawls and scarves (which have absolutely become an addiction), I considered that an H bag might be something that I would be interested in adding to my collection. At that time I did not think that a Kelly was an option for me, I could not rationalize it in any way. The Kelly in sellier is still one of the most visually stunning bags that I have ever seen. My wonderful SA has let me play with just about every style of H bag and this has made all the difference in knowing exactly what suits me and my lifestyle.

The Bolide suits me, a smaller Kelly sellier might also, but I found the harsh lines of a 32 to be unflattering on my soft curves (unless hand-carried). A retourne K does not appeal to me aesthetically in the way that a K sellier or a Bolide does, so that option is out. Now I am hoping (!!!) to find that the Birkin (30) style suits me as it is a bit more dressy than the Bolide (in the same color and leather), but softer and less formal than the K sellier, IMO. If it doesn't compliment my shape I will most likely end up with the Bolide. Because I am limited to 2 (un-preloved and over 5k) leather H bags (a self-imposed limit because I have a large family and we live in a very expensive city) at some point I will need to decide which style the second one will be.

It is a hard pill to swallow knowing that a K is only 4k more than Bolide ("only" haha ), but I also have to go with what shape flatters me and which bag will be useful for me. Please, Hermes, if you are reading this...do not drastically raise the price of K or B to make the bags priced at 8k look much "cheaper" by comparison!

My opinion of H continues to change as I age, my alternative option to a K or B was to upgrade my wedding ring. I love my wedding ring! So I am going for an Hermes bag instead.

All of this was my opinion only and I hope that it is understood that I am not judging the choices of others. I know that 99.9% of us put a lot of thought into why we choose the bag/s that we end up with.

(please excuse my typos I am having a busy day!)

Seriously - their colors are incredible!!! Now that I've been spoiled with the H rainbow, it's hard to find other brands with good color bags out there (or maybe I should say as varied).

You have some amazing colors and leather in your collection!

That's a good point to me! Opinions change as we get older & our lives & styles evolve

Lovely story. I'm glad that you feel free to choose the option that sings to you most. That's what it's all about. When I get aggravated with Hermes I try to bring myself back to that joy. I simply love seeing how everyone' expresses their style in a unique way.

Thank you both! :flowers:
We really need a thread called: "Share Your Hermes Love Story!"

It's highly likely.

How do the browbands correlate to speed?

I think they were in racing colours. Each race horse owner has their own (the jokey wears them too in their silks)

So the speed of the horse thing was probably just something that some SA made up? [emoji45]Wouldn't surprise me.

These type of brow bands are associated for horse racing (which I'm guessing the horse speed thing). The colours of the band are personalised to colours of the racing colours of an owner.

https://www.gibsonsaddlers.com/product/race-browband-620bb/

Racing colours are registered, personalised racing silks of a race horse owner that a jokey wears.

Owners design their own and register them. These are then considered their personal racing colours. Horses are often accessorised with these colours.

I'm afraid I only know about British racing but here's more info on the BHA regs if you'd like to race your Kelly

Anyway, one could say the Kelly handles seem to have been 'personalised' by their owners choosing like a race horse owner choosing their racing colours. As far as I know the Kellys don't come with a matching jokey ;)

Such interesting info, papertiger! I don't dislike those Kelly handles because of their appearance. I dislike them for practical reasons only. They are cute to look at!

Here is an idea. H could have done the straps with those patterns, not on the Kelly handles. That way, the owner of the Kelly can pick and choose their colours and interchange them easily!
