My opinion of Hermes is changing...

So did mine. I sort of groaned. He wasn't happy.

How about the little leather cage bags that hold the silk pouches? My store bought them heavily and was very proud of them. I think they were in the $5000 range. In my mind they are a novelty item and I don't spend $5000 on a novelty.

It's true that there are a few choices in that mid range. It's just that none of them appeal to me. Now bring back the trim and I'll be all over it.
Agreed, I love love love the Trim!

I wouldn't consider the GPs entry level. The leather 36 ones are nearly 4K with tax. And I'm not understanding why a distinction is being made. Sounds a bit snobby to me.

It's just a marketing term that originally referred to the bottom tier of many luxury brand 'pyramids' where the (usually) mono-print cheeper goods subsidised the more expensive handmade/hand finished items (the latter providing the company with focus for campaigns and reputation).

It's a very outdated concept now and people use it inappropriately but unfortunately the term has stuck around.

The GPs, along with the Evelynes, are only entry-level in terms of Hermés because they are in the lower price-points of Hs all-leather bags. I agree with papertiger's explanation, but I hear the term still being used and I don't think it's outdated, because the concept is still in use across luxury brands, whether or not for subsidization but definitely to bring new customers in.

How horrible. I hate when others don´t pay respect to others properties regardless if it is theaft or vandalism.
I sometimes hate the bad weather we have in my country which forces me to put the raincoat on my K but maybe I should be grateful it actually covers it up and makes it more difficult to spot.

I guess I'm an oddball, because I love the middle range bags, lol! Love the K and B, but I just don't carry them that often. I find the bolide and plume are much better everyday bags for me- less conspicuous, easier to get in and out of. I would venture to guess that most bolide/ plume fans love these designs- we don't see it as settling for something less than a birkin or kelly. I'm glad they are priced less, but their appeal isn't about a cost savings relative to a birkin or kelly.

And while this is probably gravitating into a different topic, the increased marketing and exposure of H and other brands is also creating an issue of safety. I know two people who have been robbed at gunpoint for their brand-obvious handbags/ jewelry in the past few months. In one of the cases, the robber identified her Cartier love bracelet and threatened to cut off her arm to get it! Fortunately, he settled for her bag and rings and she wasn't hurt. The police said thieves are looking for expensive bags and designer jewelry to sell to overseas crime syndicates. The robber didn't even notice her earrings, which were worth more than the bracelet. Sometimes there is a liability in carrying or wearing easily identifiable luxury items. Yet another downside to increased exposure.

I do not consider Hermes (or any brand) bags entry level. I bought it because I liked it. Not just to have something by Hermes. The GP 36 was one of my first H bags & to be honest, I felt a little self conscious after I told him. I did not expect that comment. And yes, about 4 thousand with tax is about what I payed. That's not cheap!

I have yet to become an Hermes client and I have been considering the GP 36 leather in black or indigo. I am basically a totes person. So seeing your friend refer to the bag as an elb to me was a little off putting - no offense. My preference would be to just get a birkin but of course we all know that you can't just do that and have to become a client first! At this moment the GP speaks to me as a bag that would work in my life and I have also been eyeing some of H's fine jewelry and house wares and a few equestrian items - like halters, boots, etc. :)

I couldn't agree more. To me, first purchase does not equate to "entry level".

I wear my Plume a lot for many reasons.
First because I like looking at it. There is something calming to me about the bag. No social pressure. It is understated so no looks or comments. I think it is almost boring to some people
It is is easy to find things & can be worn several ways. I have a 28 & the straps fit over my shoulder if I want to wear it that way.
It is versatile. I wear my Plume casually & to dinner at nice restaurants also
And safe. Many people are only aware of bags that get a lot of social attention. To them, I'm sure they have no idea what a Plume is

A GP is a nice choice to understand if you like the Hermes aesthetic. Not everyone is. I'm happy with my bag. I treat her as well as my others. Each has a special memory for me.

To keep within topic I have not collected Hermes long enough (5 yrs) to know if the changes are constructive & therefore have no opinion to offer. I transitioned to the line because I liked that the majority of the offerings seemed well thought out and classic.
I drifted from another brand (not LV) since I felt it became pure fashion and the quality had slipped. It was overexposed. I do not want to spend a lot of money on an of the moment sensation and to be seen with the "it bag". It's not practical & loses it's meaning for me
I hope Hermes stays to their ideals that people covet today.

So the speed of the horse thing was probably just something that some SA made up? [emoji45]Wouldn't surprise me.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I thought it might be racing silk related but that has zero to do with speed (which is why I asked originally). The patterned Bolides, etc., could be related to racing silks as well.
I find it interesting because I associate H heritage to traditional equestrian disciplines rather than to horse racing.
