If I remember correctly you've wanted it for a really long time so I think you'd be happier with it long term. Which route are you going? NM or Cartier? DBTY style necklaces aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Even if the price of everything goes up (loose diamonds, gold) you will always be able to get one for 1/3 the price of Tiffany, which hopefully, will stay affordable in the next few years

I'm thinking I'll probably go through the boutique. DF has a new cc that he wants to use to get points which isn't an AMEX so we can't go to Neimans. Maybe we'll go through Saks but since I want to get it engraved . . . the boutique might be the only way to go!
