Generally the rule is 1 for each cat +1 extra (in different areas of the house) but it sounds like this isn't the root of the problem.Let me send an email to a friend of mine in rescue telling her about your situation (without names, etc) if thats okay and see what else she can suggest, ok?

sure I don't mind.. I am open to any kind of help. Thank you :flowers:

If I had the space to put more litter boxes out I would... and when the kids are bigger (1 is still crawling) I will if I have this problem then.. lets hope not..

I'm sorry this is happening to you and your cat. I don't have any suggestions for the cat, except maybe to involve kitty more in social stuff (sounds like it's jealousy if there's no infection). Hug for children, hug for cat...it could help reduce any tension.

Before giving up you should take your bag to a dry cleaners, but mention any cleaning agents you have already tried (like the vinegar solution) as this may make a difference in safe treatment. Vinegar can bleach, and it may react with further chemicals if there's any residue.

I wouldn't feel guilty about doing what you have to do. If the cat is producing an unhealthy environment and you have a child crawling, your children's well being comes first as I am sure you know as a mother so don't let anybody make you feel bad about getting rid of the cat. Sometimes families outgrow their pets when they have children and that is ok. If I had an animal and it did the slightest thing to create an unhealthy environment for my children then that animal would be gone, no questions asked. You will know yourself what is the right thing to do, raising children is hard enough but adding a cat that pees randomly throughout the house to the mix doesn't even sound plausible to me !

I can definitely relate to your frustration with the spraying situation. My male (both cats are inside cats) only seems to spray in the basement and my couches! The female cat who is his sister would bully him and chase him, then he would spray. The diazempam/Valium really has solved the situation- on a rare occasion does he spray now. Call your vet- we started with 2 ml and ended up on 5 ml for both cats- a half pill in the am and the other half at night. I pill both cats since the female was beating up the male and freaking him out. We also used a solution called Urine off on the furniture and carpet for the smell. I'm not sure how the Coach fabric would react to Urine-off- maybe a test patch? We got the Urine off from a carpet/flooring store and you can order it online.
Hope this helps!

We have 2 cats and a dog...

We have 2 litter boxes in the the only part of our house that the dog and babies can't get to. The Dog, Zoe, eats the poop out of the litter box if they are available to her..., I know.

Anyway.. one is in the hall closet and one is about 3 feet away from the other and they are both blocked off by a baby gate. We call it the kitty latrine. Let me just tell you that before the spraying he and out other cat shared a litter box since they both moved in with us. Never once had any issues with outside urinating until the kids were born. He didn't seem to care when we got the dog either. He goes in the litter box all the time, so I know he is using it. We clean them daily and really clean them weekly.

He seems to be set off when outsiders come over. We had some travertine installed in our kitchen and when they were done.. what does the cat do? He sprays it. The maid comes over to clean.. he sprays my bathtub. We have a birthday party for Ava.. he sprays the guest bathroom. I know that he sprays around the front door too, and that may be from another cat outside.. I haven't seen one, but this is my guess. I try to keep the blinds closed so he can't see out there.. but he has also sprayed the blinds in the dining room and kitchen.. I am going crazy here. I finally have (had) a nice house with my family and he is ruining it.. and my purse collection..

Sorry for the rant.. I am just frustrated over the whole situation. :hysteric:

tara! what ended up happening?? did you get it professionally cleaned? does it still smell? how is kitty? still w/ us?

Yes, the bag has been cleaned and does not smell at all. :wlae: Kitty is still with us.. but my husband proclaimed that he is gone:crybaby: We will have to find him a new home eventually. Or make him an outside cat. I have been looking into enclosures that make it almost impossible for a cat to jump over a fence so that's an option. He messed up a huge patch of wood floor by the front door over the weekend I think that sent my DH over the edge.. we just had the floor installed last January for a lot of money... I know my cat should be more important than the floor, but my children crawl and walk all over that floor and I am REALLY tired of trying to clean it and keep it sanitary for my children.

Aww Tara this is so sad. I am glad u were able to get rid of the smell from the purse, but I am sad to hear that you are having to get rid of your cat--hopefully you will be able to make him an outside cat! I have one cat, an orange tabby and he is like a child to me. I couldnt imagine life without him, but then again, he doesnt spray all over. Good luck Tara, hopefully you can end up keeping him after all!

I had a cat that started to do this once. The vet asked if we had moved the furniture, were using new cleaners, if the neighbors had got a new cat. A new neighbor cat will cause that. It turned out my poor guy had a urinary blockage.

I'm so sorry and I know how you are feeling because I have a dog that did a lot of crazy things in the house too and he destroy everything. I have a leather couch and he eat it all. One day I told my husband that I was so sorry but be can't continue having the dog so I was looking in the newspaper for find a new home for him. That was a few months ago. The dog is still with us and he will be here forever because I still can't understand how I was thinking in give him away without think in him, I just was thinking in my leather couch. The leather couch doesn't feel but my dog can die if he need to live with another people.
That's what you should think. What is more important for you, the bag or the cat that is living with you for 7 years and gave a lot of happiness and love?
Please understand my point. Don't give him away. He feel and he will miss you a lot. You will have a lot more of Coach bags!!! Good luck Tara and please stay with your kitty... poor baby!
:flowers::heart:

Tara: Another thing I need to tell you is that your cat maybe is sick. I was reading your message again and you said that he just started to do this? Well, I have another dog that is almost 10 years old and she was doing something similar in 2006. She just can't stop pee in the house and she never did this before. So we took her to the vet and she was having problems in her bladder (an infection). We gave her some pills and she never did it again! Take your cat to the doctor and ask him about this. If you went already and the vet told you he was fine, take the kitty to another vet and have a second opinion!!! Good Luck!

Hmm I have had 2 girl cats, my friend has had boy cats and my nana also had a girl cat and none of us have had a cat with a spraying problem. How unusual, sounds that since he only started doing it after your children where born that it is an emotional thing, jealousy most probably, or if the babies cry and/or are very loud it could be anxiety. I read up and a study says that 13% of cats who are neutered still spray, so it is definitely behavioural in one form or another, and it does happen probably fairly often.

I did find this:

Anti anxiety drugs for cats who spray.
Anti anxiety drugs are available from your vet which may be useful in preventing your cat from spraying. Discuss the use of drugs with your vet.
Clomicalm and valium are drugs available only from Veterinarians and are used for treating spraying problems in cats. Some people report that their cats lose their personality and become zombies when on anti anxiety drugs.

So I guess it is either make him an outdoor cat, rehome him, or test the anti-anxiety drugs. Can't think of any more options :s

Sorry it is such a horrible decision to have to make, Hopefully he will be fine in a little cat house outdoors, so you can keep him. Good luck! :flowers:

Aw, I hope everything works out and you don't have to get rid of him. Cats are so wonderful and make great companions and I'm sure since you have had it for 7 years it will be a hard decision. Good luck :flowers:

Augh that's awful! I'm so sorry! I hope you can get the smell out. That worries me. I have a male cat who's a year old and I'd hate to think there's a chance that he'd pee on my stuff! O_O My other cat is a girl and so I'm unfamiliar with males and spraying..
