My cat Sprayed one of my bags!

If this problem has just started and you had him for 7 years, he might have a medical condition that needs to be taken care of. Maybe a UTI. Male cats tend to have urinary problem.

Try asking your vet. Just not sure why he is marking his territory all over. Did you just get a new pet, another dog...cat? New baby? Something is pissing him off, how strange. I know lots of people are reccomending getting rid of him, but shelters are overcrowed right now, especially being an overcrowding in cats... so hate to say it, but he would be put down if you go that route.

Just try to figure out what you changed in your home. New furniture... something used you just bought... something must be different! in the meantime... time to put those bags in your closet on the highest shelf! Far away from kitty. I hope something works! good luck!

I have had him check for UTI and he hasnt had one.. I was hoping it was something like that so it could be corrected, but I think it's behavioral.

I know there is new stuff in the house.. and the purse was new but came from Ebay.. but really there is alway going to be new stuff around the house.. is he going to spray every new thing that comes in.. I just can't take that!!

I know not to place him in a shelter.. I have been telling DH that he would not stand a chance in there.

Sorry I hate cats too and now I have one more reason to reinforce this feeling. I am not a cold animal hater, I love animals but from very far away ! when you say spraying is it pee or like a skunk sprays ? sorry I don't understand things that cats do because I have never owned one. Maybe coach cleaner ? Maybe he is jealous of your love for your purses like maybe he thinks he isn't getting enough attention or something and taking it out on your purse ! Thank god it wasn't Ali !

When a cat sprays it is like concentrated urine that they use to mark their territory and it is smelly and icky..

Has the cat always sprayed or is this a recent issue? Has it been to the vet to see if there is an underlying medical issue? Is he fixed? Sorry if I repeated some questions but I want to see if I can suggest something. Sorry I just saw you replies to the other questions. Sounds behavioral and that is always harder to fix. But not impossible.

Oh no ! I agree with the other poster to have the kitty checked by the dr. This may be a symptom of diabetes ? I know cats for some reason are prone to this because everyone I know that owns cats have had at least one with diabetes and I think changes in peeing habits may be a sign of this. Hope kitty and your bag are better soon !

I agree about having him checked for medical conditions, but ultimately an animal IS an animal. I might be cruel and heartless, but I would not play psychiatrist to an animal and hypothesize about what he might not like or what he might be upset about. I will never take a chance in my home that things will be ruined (there are things far more expensive to replace than a Coach bag), so I will not allow animals in my home.

I learned the lesson the hard way when dh and I were engaged. He had a cat who sprayed (yes, the cat had been fixed), ruining the curtains, the carpet and furniture. We found another home for the cat (the owners had a heated barn and provided food and fresh water for the cats and dog they had - the cat lived another 9 years!) and replaced everything from ceiling to floor. I will never go through that again.

He started spraying when we had Sophia.. then it let up some and then we had Ava and it started all over again.. we bought a new house and had new floors put in and he has pretty much ruined parts of them.. and now he has moved on to my bags :crybaby:

we had him checked for urinary issues before and there was none. I have been trying to curb the spraying with feliway products that help calm the cat and make him think that he doesn't want to spray.. I guess I should spray that stuff on my purses.

Yes, way more expensive things.. like flooring. I have already come to terms that I will need to replace the flooring before we move.. and it sickens me, because we just got it.

I am thinking of having him move to a home like this. I have a friend that offered to take him to the country and be a barn cat.. he has always been inside so I told her I would think about it.

I know, I cringe every time I see someone post pics of their bags with their animal sniffing around or pawing at them. I always imagine some catastrophe would happen (hmm now that I think about it does that word have special meaning ? ) totally unintentional but makes me wonder !

i'm so sorry this happened! ^^i think that may be the best solution for everyone involved. i have a friend that had a cat that was pretty mean, they let it outside and he's the nicest kitty now.
did you call CS to ask what you can clean it w/??

Is he neutered? If not, he really should be...

As for your bag (and anywhere else he's been spraying), try a mixture of vinegar and water (I think you do half vinegar and half water). Vinegar deodorizes and disinfects, and I *think* it would be gentle enough to use on fabric. It should also keep him from spraying that area again.

(Animal People-Vinegar rocks. It's a great way to clean your pet's litterbox/cage/whatever without exposing him/her to chemicals. Also, if you let a puddle of vinegar sit on plastic that has stains or a buildup of minerals from urine (you'll commonly see this in the corners of litterboxes or cages that rabbits have used), it really helps remove it)

^^true! cats also hate the smell of anything citrus.

I have a male cat that has been fixed that started spraying when he was around 2. The vet prescribed Valium- he gets 5 miligrams a Valium a day- no more spraying unless he gets super stressed about something. The doorbell ringing several times can be a stressor-@@. I would not use the vinegar solution- vinegar can bleach out color.
Hope this helps.

You're welcome:smile1:

Have you tried consulting your vet about the problem? He/she might have ideas about what could be causing it and suggestions for how to stop it.

Have there been any changes in your home recently? Things like moving, redecorating, new people coming into the home, familiar people leaving, or a change in the family's schedule (like a SAHM starting to work) can cause animals to do odd things like this.
