Michael Kors "copies" other designers?

Just few days ago there was a business headline about his business not doing well or something and stocks of his company are down.

I feel his stuff is overpriced for cheap craftsmanship. I am glad i do not own anything from MK and would not want to. I hate (its a strong word) passing through this store just. IMO Designers are suppose to be creative he is a copycat not a designer

So , I haven't bough am MMK bag in quite a while. I had one a few years ago made out of the softest, smooshiest leather and it was a drawstring, my favorite type of bag. Unfortunately, to fund other bags, I had to sell it. I then went for a few years without buying one of his bags. I recently got one that I love. Not flashy and great slouch appeal. I think that there are SO many bags that "copy" others. For example. Who had the forst speedy? Now virtually every brand has a speedy. Who started monogram? Again, almost every brand has monogrammed bags. There are only a limited amount of shapes that are out there. Yes, I do think that some MMK bags look as though they are copying other bags, however, is there a brand that doesn't do that?

I agree with a lot of the other posters, I do not like designers that "copy" other designers and get away with it. I also don't like any bags from MK because of this. I think he's doing that with shoes too.

Hey India! Not sure what you meant. I was responding only because I saw the topic!
I wasn't specifically calling you out, m'dear. Sorry if it seemed that way.

I guess I am the odd one here - I've been noticing handbags for at least 35 years and there has not been a time when bags have not looked like other bags at some point in time. They can be different material, expensive vs cheap, with hardware or without it - but at some point they can look like another. I'm also into the history of the bag, and you go back to 16th century dynasty China, they've got bags, and darned if they don't look like what we call a classic hobo today, some of them. Some of them are beaded and ornate and how did the American Native Indian copy that design?

Who is copying who?

I have NEVER cared for Michael Kors and I think it's darned funny that so many of you didn't know who he was until he suddenly got on everyone's radar - the 'it' bag for the Coach set. Kors has been around since 1981, for heaven's sake.

Now specifically calling a brand/designer out like this smacks of a witch hunt and like I said to begin with...

I think it's odd.

Here, where we have a love affair with the handbag. I don't mind talking about bags we don't like, but this?

Thanks for letting me have an opinion, too. I'll go back to my little BVette world...

I agree with India. Who is copying who? Are there really new bags?
I remember when Mulberry made their famous Roxanne it bag.
Lots of people complained there were copies at the time.
The thing is I had bought exactly the same bag years and years before the Roxanne came out....
Anyway, I think the big high end brands can défend themselves if they want to....
They don't need us....do they?

while I have mixed feelings about a lot of his bags i do have to say he's incredibly intelligent with what he's done here, doing something I dont think anyone has done on this scale before. He created his label which generally speaking can be considered a luxury line. What he then did was offer premier bag styles at much more afforable prices, not so cheap that they could just be considered knock offs but just expensive enough that people purchasing them could feel like they were buying a luxury item. It really is quite genius and I don't fault him for doing it, sometimes you just like the style of the bag and it has nothing to do with the fact that it's made by hermes or saint laurent or gucci so why pay $3000 for a bag that you can get from michael kors for $200 that is the same style and still considered a designer bag.
the trade off of course is it's costing him artistic integrity and probably guranteed that his own label won't be around for generations but i'm sure his great grandkids would much prefer a trust fund with $50 million over having a clothing label to run.

I don't care very much for the MK monogram stuff, but then I usually don't like monogram/signature (Coach is the exception since it's the brand that really got me interested in handbags to begin with). I don't even like LV monogram that much. Still, I think everyone takes at least some inspiration from each other. The more designers there are, the more it's gonna happen. I've gone through the MK site and saw plenty of bags like what you're talking about. Most I don't like, and that's about where it stops for me.

The MK version of "damier ebene" I think is pretty ugly, but the uglier thing I'm finding is bag snobbery. I start to feel guilty to say I like anything MK.

I don't follow MK very much anymore because I am not fond of the bright gold hardware or having a live person's full name on my handbags (I always think of the person and not the brand :shrugs:). However, when I do see the bags, they don't remind me of other designer bags I am familiar with. Maybe they are similar, but they don't have the same allure, therefore they are not close enough. The marcie I love, but I would have never seen the Kors bag as even close. The birkin lookalike? Um, no. It's a different bag to me.

I've liked some of his collection bags (skorpio and tonne and I saw a pic of an amazing drawstring bag once on tpf) but never enough to spend the money. Do the collection hobos look like they are copied?

I stopped at an MK watch (one with a leather strap), which I love, but it is big and a little showy, so I don't wear it often.
