Michael Kors "copies" other designers?

I wish he would put more of a personal note into it, but generally I don't mind if designers use a key feature of a premiere designer for a similar look. I can't afford premier and won't for a while, even with lots of saving, but I like some of the detail. So I'm glad contemporary designers stick to the same fashion.
That's all it is...fashion. Trapeze and gussets are in fashion so lots of designers are making bags with these features.
I like some of MK's designs, and some I find rather bland and free of creativity ;)

I'm sure every designer brand will have something that is very similar to another. It's a pretty small community (Unless you venture into the indies) so there will be ideas that gets reused, rehashed. I think it's good personally as it differentiates the quality of the brand. You can have 2 items look similar but if one is charging triple the price for inferior quality, then there's an issue.

Saffiano first appeared in the Prada bags. I notice after MK followed, Calvin Klein followed suit as well.

I have the MK Jet Set tote and matching accessories that resembles the LV versions. (1) it's in my budget and (2) Kors has some extra bells and whistles (extra organization, adjustable straps) that aren't in the top designers. That's my limit of MK tho.

There's only so many shapes to a handbag or cosmetic pouch, and all designers produce similar shapes but what makes MK (and Rioni) seem more like copies comes with using their versions of "vachetta" and their own monograms.

I think he uses too many of the same elements that other designers use for his bags.
For instance, the design below looks too much like a Bal moto bag. So why do the tassels and the same hardware? Why not just do the tassel OR the hardware.

Exactly, or why not put different tassels and hardware.

Am I the only one that finds the MK charm a bit flashy? It is quite big...and you can read MK from 100 feet away :P

That charm drives me nuts. Way too big.
Much like the LV canvas bags, you can totally see it "from 100 feet away."

True, but if one would not know the Damiers are LV it would just be a checkerboard pattern. The LV monogram is really "out there" though... :/

LV tends to feature items with big, shiny LV letters as well. Like the belt buckles. I like when brands have a little signature something, small embossed logos etc., that gives it a nice touch, but some brands really are over the top and the MK charm looks like a hoop earring stolen from a hip hop artist :p (I think that trend is dead now, as well as hip hop, but who remembers the hoops with letters?)

In my previous years, I bought many MK purses. I did so because I liked the style, although I was unaware of whether they were copied off other designers or not... I wasn't looking at Prada or Celine at the time so I just thought, 'Hey that's a cute bag'. I feel like many MK shoppers could have this approach. Unless it is something really recognizable... like how so many bags have a monogram style that looks like LV. Or how Guess bags try to look like Gucci. Nowadays, I don't like buying something that feels like it has been knocked off of another designer, but if I didn't ever see the original designer's version, then I wouldn't know any better!

Yes, I think this happens a lot more than many people realize. Not everyone is willing to spend hours comparison shopping and obsessing over bags like we do. They have a price they want to pay, they find a bag that fits that price and they buy it and go about their business and never think about it again until it's time to buy another bag. Before I really got into browsing tPF I was totally unaware of how many bags were copies of other bags. It was a huge revelation for me.
And even some who are aware just will not spend more than $xyz for a handbag just based on principal so they choose the best quality they can find within their range.
Seems unfair to hold it against the designer for offering people that option.
Btw- I'm not a fan of MK at all. But not because he copies other brands. I'm just not into his general aesthetic.

Which aesthetic would that be? His LV, Prada, Balenciaga or Gucci look a likes?
(Yes, I've recently seen too many Gucci wannabe bags put out by him.)

 sorry, had to ask :D

Lol!!! Touché!!
Just the over the top MK's all over EVERYTHING. I'm just really not into being able to tell what kind of bag someone is carrying from across a parking lot.

This is his marketing genius at work. It's quite deliberate. But he's not alone: Ralph Lauren has done the same for years with their bags. MK is just vastly successful at it.

MK used to be a real designer, though (I mean with originality). I have a Celine Boogie from his time designing for Celine, and with that bag he originated an exceptional, fresh classic. It's a path he just didn't pursue.

Too bad he went this route. Would be interesting to see what other original designs he can come up with.
Alas, I guess we'll never know.
