Does anyone think Michael was suppose to be at the CCMA but something came up at the last minute? Only because, that joke Mindy said made it feel like Michael was supposed to be in attendance. Donald was scripted to make the joke to Charlize Theron so why make a joke about someone who isn't there?

Maybe Michael didn't attend because he's pi$$ed that his movie isn't even being taken in full consideration by Hollywood critics... and Clooney is being given all the awards without remotely deserving it this year. If I was in Michael's shoes right now I wouldn't have attend this f#ckery either! :feminist:

Because he was a Best Actor nominee, I also assumed that he would be present (and also thought he had confirmed his presence from a previous Lainey post). 90% odds that there will be a thorough analysis on the matter tomorrow on LaineyGossip.

I suppose if he's hosting a Q&A in Hackney tomorrow night, that tonight's show and afterparty would make him miss the plane in time for tomorrow's appearance (taking in account time zone change). I forget that it's only opening now in the UK and that he's been heavily involved in its promotion.

Oh, God that will be fun -.-

This strikes me as odd though: we're only a day before ballots are due, what would be the point to have a hissy fit now? Plus, Martha Marcy May Marlene has been basically tossed aside by team Fox Searchlight (too bad because Olsen's début is impressive) to concentrate on Descendants and Shame so it would look very amateur to do this kind of unexplained ditch move. BFCA's are super mainstream and his winning chances were close to none, but his campaign has been going so well that I'm surprised it would unravel for a personal purpose. Guess we'll hear it through the gravevine in due time...

Oh, strike the Hackney Q&A, not until next week I forgot.

Re: Gosling -- I've heard from many different outlets that post-Blue Valentine fiasco/snub (where he campaigned loads for the movie), he has a principle of not Oscar campaigning at all. No Q&A, no schmoozing, no soirée, nothing -- other than appearing at the premiere. He was noticeably absent from the Ides of March campaign even if he wasn't yet preshooting the Refn movie, and because there were so many good lead performances this year, I'm not surprised that he's not much talked about for Oscar chances. Such are the beautiful politics of this process...

It'll be on January 20th. 'Shame' Premiere was yesterday, I think.

I prefer the conspiracy theory :p I think that Fox Searchlight announced at the last minute in November that they were distributing 'Shame' in US limited release just to control over Clooney’s movie competition ('Shame' and 'MMMM') even better... and they probably led on both Fassbender and McQueen into thinking they will back them up to get Academy members recognition and prizes as they deserve. But with another unfair win for Clooney's PR team tonight they must have finally realized they've been screwed from the start and won't win a single thing and decided to boycott the live ceremony at the last minute as some kind of backfire at them (and the bad publicity that will follow) for considering them as foolish puppets (hence the confusing joke from Mindy Kaling) they could easily play with.

^ interesting! thank you, I had not heard any of that.

Good on him if this is true! Quite frankly, I think the whole idea of 'campaigning' is pathetic. One's performance should be the only criteria for choosing a winner. Not how many talk shows you visit to talk about the dog you conveniently just adopted or the girlfriend you conveniently hired just in time for awards season.

Re Michael:

Word on the street is that the 'Shame' team is upset with Fox Searchlight due to their choice to heavily campaign for Clooney/The Descendants over McQueen/Fassbender/Shame. Steve apparently feels as though the studio have abandoned the movie in favor of Clooney playing Clooney. And since they sit the tables at the Critics Choice Awards with mostly studio people, Michael may have skipped the event to show his solidarity with Steve and to send a message. This, of course, is all hearsay (the opinion of an "anon" on tumblr who works for a screener company and perhaps has insider information) and not proven facts. I wouldn't fully believe it without proof but it kind of makes sense.

The "anon" also said that most of the Academy "hates" 'Shame' and dislikes Steve (wonder why? could it be because he speaks his mind and calls them out on their bullsh*t???) and that because of this, Michael will be "lucky" to get a nomination. Um..we'll see about that, "anon".

Hollywood politics can seriously kiss my Fass (the F is silent).

If any of this is true, Michael Fassbender has a fan in me for life for being a loyal friend/colleague and taking a stand like that.

Sure, I can imagine McQueen and Team Shame being annoyed that they feel left in the dust by the studio, but honestly can't imagine what good it would do to 'take a stand' like this, especially if it's to be repeated in other televised events -- it's ill-advised and doesn't do anything to change the situation at all, other than make both of them look like sore losers/ungrateful for their studio's backing (which they're not, but perception matters) and get tongues wagging in the industry. Tons of good movies merit a full-fledged campaign and Shame is one of the lucky few that have gotten a really great one. Life in general is a backstabbing biatch, so I can't see Fassbender get his panties in a huff for this, out of loyalty or genuine anger?

The conspiracy theory (hehe, I always love a good conspiracy theory) would gel if he was an absolute predictable frontrunner from the beginning of the season, but honestly, I felt like he had a legitimate chance when Fox Searchlight got involved in the melee (otherwise he would have gone the way of Woody Harrelson/Olivia Colman --- amazing performance, no traction whatsoever because of insufficient campaign funds with smaller studios). I too, find the idea of campaigning rather bizarre but the Academy's never been about sole meritocracy, as reminded by Penny's epic list of snubs. So the actors can complain about it and stay sidelined, or get involved in their own way and snag that nomination :). Maybe it was down to the last fight, and he worked the phones with Academy members all night long ;)

But when all is said and done, don't think anyone would really raise an eyebrow over his non-appearance yesterday, hope so anyway.

Here's an interview from the dynamic duo with ShortList (Fassbender also did an interview with them for X-Men First Class -- and Matt Vaughn talks about him in his own video interview equally for XMFC on the same site): http://www.shortlist.com/entertainment/films/michael-fassbender-2 .

Is London Film Critics' Circle Awards' Attendees List the Winners in Disguise? (The Hollywood Reporter)

The expected guests list sent out to the media ahead of next week's London Film Critics' Circle Awards ceremony reads like a roll call of hot favorites for the nods, perhaps even eventual winners.

Michel Hazanavicius, director of 'The Artist', is expected to attend for the show on January 19th having been nominated in both the film of the year and best director categories.
Only fellow director Lynne Ramsay, nominated alongside Hazanavicius for her work with 'We Need To Talk About Kevin', is mentioned as an expected guest. Ramsay’s film also enjoys a nomination slot on the ceremony’s British film of the year list.

Michael Fassbender, nominated for his turn in 'Shame' in the best actor and in the British actor of the year category for 'A Dangerous Method' and Kenneth Branagh for his supporting role in 'My Week With Marilyn' are both expected to attend.
Fassbender will have Jean Dujardin in the room for his turn in 'The Artist' in the best actor category but no mention yet of George Clooney ('The Descendants'), Ryan Gosling ('Drive') or Gary Oldman ('Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy') on the expected list in that category.

Another hot favorite for a nod on the night is Olivia Colman, nominated in the British actress of the year category for her role in both 'The Iron Lady' and 'Tyrannosaur'.

Again, no mention for Carey Mulligan ('Drive' and 'Shame'), Vanessa Redgrave ('Anonymous' and 'Coriolanus'), Tilda Swinton ('We Need To Talk About Kevin') or Rachel Weisz ('The Deep Blue Sea') on the list of names hoping to get flashbulbs popping.
Surely Asif Kapadia, the director of documentary sensation 'Senna' about the famous Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, is in pole position to see his efforts rewarded in the documentary of the year.

Time will tell if the expected guests who end up rocking up on the night at the BFI Southbank fulfil the promise of putting their names down early for spaces on the night...
