Who’s afraid of Ricky Gervais?

After his scathing hosting job of the Golden Globes in 2011, many predicted that Ricky Gervais would never be asked to fill that job again. "Totally unacceptable" is how the previous head of the Hollywood Foreign Press described Gervais' performance.

Gervais, in all his impish glory, skewered Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis and the Hollywood Foreign Press itself, which made for great TV and left lots of bruised egos in the room. All that, however, is now water under the proverbial award's show bridge.
This human blowtorch of barbs and insults returns on Sunday, Jan. 15 to host - and roast - more Hollywood A-listers at the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards, televised live on NBC.

Gervais, reportedly, agreed to return because he knew it would shock Hollywood and annoy more people.
Whatever his reasons or those of the producers inviting Gervais back, the move is a shrewd one according to Pete Hammond, an entertainment critic for Deadline Hollywood in Los Angeles: "Do you remember who won last year's Golden Globe Awards? Probably not. But you remember Ricky Gervais. That's why he's back" Hammond said on Friday on Canada AM.
"He makes the show totally watchable," said Hammond. "You never know what he's going to say or what's going to happen."

In 2010, the Golden Globes pulled in 17 million viewers with Gervais hosting the show. The number jumped by five per cent when the plucky star returned as host in 2011.

Whether Gervais can help the Golden Globes top those figures yet again remains to be seen. But that curiosity around what he'll say - and about whom - should entice fans and critics to tune in again. That and the presence of some of Hollywood's most gorgeous male actors.

"It's the People's Sexiest Men Alive show this year" said Hammond. :blushing:

This year's Best Actor race in the dramatic film category will include such handsome entries as George Clooney ('The Descendants'), Brad Pitt ('Moneyball'), Ryan Gosling ('The Ides of March'), Leonardo DiCaprio ('J. Edgar') and Michael Fassbender ('Shame').

"You've got all of them in the same category. It's like eye candy for women this year and they can act, too. Big shock" said Hammond.
"But I think it's going to be George Clooney for ‘The Descendants'" Hammond predicted. :nogood:
Hammond also made this prediction: the battle for Best Actress should become a "knock-down, drag-out fight" between Viola Davis ('The Help') and Meryl Streep ('The Iron Lady').
Earlier this week, Viola Davis already nabbed the Best Actress award at the 2012 Critics' Choice Awards.
Hammond was in the room as Davis' name was read out to the crowd.
"She was actually sitting with Meryl Streep" said Hammond. "Streep was the first one to get up and congratulate Davis". "They love each other. It's a very friendly rivalry, if you want to call it that," he said.

Finally, the battle for Best Picture in the dramatic category should turn into a three-way race between 'Hugo', 'The Descendants' and 'The Help'.
'The Artist' the silent, black-and-white film from director Michel Hazanavicius, should also go on to win Best Picture in the comedy category.
Set in 1920 Hollywood, the film follows the fortunes of one dashing Hollywood mega-star and an up-and-coming ingénue.
The underdog film has earned six Globe nominations, including Best Actor for star Jean Dujardin in Best Screenplay. "This film has been winning all sorts of awards," said Hammond. "Not many people have seen it yet. But it's taken Hollywood by storm."

First, asking Gervais to come back makes the Hollywood Foreign Press Association look confident and self-aware rather than prickly and insecure. At the ceremony last year, Gervais didn’t exempt his hosts from his barbs, lampooning the Globes for nominating the luxe-but-lukewarm 'The Tourist': “I haven’t even seen ‘The Tourist.’ Who has? It must be good because it’s nominated, so shut up,” he joked. “I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumor going round that the only reason it was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.”
But having a sense of humor over its attempts to reel in a little talent would put the HFPA and its audience on the same footing going into the event.
It’s easier to defuse allegations by laughing them off than by trying to quash an embarrassing truth your host shared with over 17 million people.

And Gervais is more likely to provide an entertaining show than the results of the awards ceremony itself. The Globes play a role in the horse race on the way to the Oscars, but the nominations this year make for a singularly unexciting set of contests. In some categories, it’s difficult to care which already-anointed actor will walk off with this year’s trophy. When it comes to the best actor award, Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio (nominated for 'J. Edgar') and Brad Pitt’s careers will all continue on their merry way without a statuette, and Michael Fassbender ('Shame') and Ryan Gosling ('The Ides of March') are on trajectories steep enough that a loss wouldn’t even slow their rise to the top. Victory comes cheaper if you don’t claim it over your true competitors. :woohoo:

The best the Golden Globes can ever hope to achieve is second place in the hierarchy of awards shows. And that’s where Gervais comes in. But in collaboration with Gervais or a host like him, the HFPA — whether it intends to or not — is producing an awards show that combines our contradictory attitudes toward celebrities. First we get them in the room, and then we cut them down to size.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards airs on Sunday, Jan. 15 on NBC at 8 pm.

Good on him if this is true! Quite frankly, I think the whole idea of 'campaigning' is pathetic. One's performance should be the only criteria for choosing a winner. Not how many talk shows you visit to talk about the dog you conveniently just adopted or the girlfriend you conveniently hired just in time for awards season.

Re Michael:

Word on the street is that the 'Shame' team is upset with Fox Searchlight due to their choice to heavily campaign for Clooney/The Descendants over McQueen/Fassbender/Shame. Steve apparently feels as though the studio have abandoned the movie in favor of Clooney playing Clooney. And since they sit the tables at the Critics Choice Awards with mostly studio people, Michael may have skipped the event to show his solidarity with Steve and to send a message. This, of course, is all hearsay (the opinion of an "anon" on tumblr who works for a screener company and perhaps has insider information) and not proven facts. I wouldn't fully believe it without proof but it kind of makes sense.

The "anon" also said that most of the Academy "hates" 'Shame' and dislikes Steve (wonder why? could it be because he speaks his mind and calls them out on their bullsh*t???) and that because of this, Michael will be "lucky" to get a nomination. Um..we'll see about that, "anon".

Hollywood politics can seriously kiss my Fass (the F is silent).

If any of this is true, Michael Fassbender has a fan in me for life for being a loyal friend/colleague and taking a stand like that.

I don't buy this at all. McQueen mentioned only last Tuesday how happy he was with Fox Searchlight picking up the film and that they never even asked him to cut it.

Besides, I don't think Fassy is an idiot. He wouldn't jeopardise his chances in Hollywood after all those years of struggling.

Nine Inch Nails ruled.

I agree :supacool:

He said he likes Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Tom Waits and I heard him sing Sinatra, The Beatles and Van Morrison in interviews before:hbeat: :hugs:
He's also a big fan of Metal music bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Motörhead and Mötley Crüe :rochard:
He has some pretty good tastes in music even if I can't seriously picture him listening to 2Pac's hit "How Do You Want It" :jammin:

I saw The Iron Lady today and noticed that Abi wrote the screenplay (she worked with Steve to write Shame :] )

I saw it last week when Meryl Streep came to Paris for the Premiere. Streep's performance was exceptional her appearance, posture and voice were spot on, as usual, but the film itself could have concentrated more on Thatcher's political career and less on the present day dementia sufferer and that was the main problem with Abi Morgan's script, it could have been different if the real Margaret Thatcher wasn't still very well alive. Yet, it's an Oscar-worthy act and the film is worth seeing for Streep alone.

Heads up! The LAFCA Awards ceremony is tonight and they're streaming the red carpet arrivals from their site: http://lafca.net/

Hopefully he'll be there to accept his award.

I don't think he'll be attending the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards because [he's in London right now and] he didn't show up at the AFI Awards in Beverly Hills today (Dicaprio, Pitt and Clooney were there).

Unless Fox S. wanted him to schmooze with other A-listers, there was absolutely no reason for Fassbender to show up at AFI since Shame wasn't nominated in the AFI top 10 (J. Edgar, Descendants, and Moneyball were, hence the DiCaprio/Pitt/Clooney appearances). However, he did win Best Actor at LAFCA so it would be weird that he'd skip out of that ceremony, lest it be for unspecified reasons. I mean, he showed up at NBR, and that was for an award they invented this year to bestow him! We'll know in a couple of hours, I guess.

Well, there's still hope that he might show up at the last minute then :smile1:

If he shows up tonight he will probably also attend the British Academy of Film and Television Arts 18th Annual Awards (Season Tea Party) on Saturday, January 14th at the Four Seasons Hotel before the Golden Globes on Sunday.
